Very good overall quality. Please keep in mind that this manga is in Japanese and that there may be some slight yellowing due to the age of the paper. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have.
Hirohiko Araki ( 荒木飛呂彦) is a Japanese manga artist. He left school before graduation from Miyagi University of Education.
He enjoys the baseball manga Kyojin No Hoshii (Star of the Giants); the video games Mario Kart and Bomberman; and likes Prince and other African-American singers, as well as jazz, rock, and rap.
I loved the perspective change to Lucy Steel. SBR has been great about fluidly connecting its "arcs" together and this is a great continuation of that trend. I enjoyed seeing Lucy and Mountain Tim get time to shine, while blackmore makes for an interesting villain. He's got a fantastic, intimidating design, but he personality is pretty quirky. He has some odd mannerisms, such as how he says sor-ry or how he checks the toilet for an escape route. Another reason I feel so fondly toward this character is the number of downright gorgeous panels he gets as he travels on the rain. Again, the color team is just killing it.
Mountain Tim's death was surprisingly effective. I had a soft spot for the guy. He gets some nice characterization here, at least. He shoots his shot with Lucy (which is pretty fucked up given her age and the circumstances), and is rejected. Tim's motivation is that he wants a person or a place to return to. A "place" to call home, even if that place is in the arms of his love. I wonder if home represents more than just a comfortable place, but a reason to journey to begin with. Something to fight for. But Tim dies before finding a place to call home. Part of me wonders if he had given up and expected to die in his fight with Blackmore, but that's just speculation.
Blackmore doesn't get a whole lot of development. For a brief moment, he considers keeping the spine for himself. Blackmore experiencing euphoria after coming into contact with Jesus, but flipping to the next page reveals that he's been shot by Lucy.
The sudden contrast there had me burst out laughing. The way Mountain Tim and Lucy start blasting has a compelling suddenness to it. It reminds me of Django Unchained, when Dr Schultz would use his trick gun. The little sound effect and the way the camera haphazardly zooms in- it's a shot of adrenaline. Those two moments in this volume gave me that same sort of feeling.
Anyway, Blackmore gets a healthy dose of catholic guilt. He says that his inevitable death is punishment for trying to keep the corpse for himself instead of handing over to the president, who will become head of the world. I don't know if Araki is trying to comment on the American psyche when he writes this stuff or if that's just what's coming across to me. But it's kind of remarkable how such a brief moment is able to encapsulate Christian America's tendencies for self-flagellation; or the way Americans characterize their nation as being the inheritors of God's will and favor, which entitles them to shape the world according to their vision. Few Americans would articulate this to you or are consciously aware that they think this way. But America's relationship with Christianity and the rest of the world conveys such a worldview. And this same sort of attitude is reflected in characters like Blackmore. He flat out says that he deserves to die for being selfish, and resolves to give the body of Christ to the president so that he may rule the world.
This is an aside, but Gyro's own arc about rejecting inherited tradition, filial piety, and rule of law for the sake of a self-determined path is also a pretty individualistic story.
Anyway, the latter half of this volume didn't do as much for me. The confrontation between Gyro and Dio was probably the least exciting horsey race yet. Araki tried, but there's only so much you can do with a wide open field.
The way Gyro has changed does have something to it, though. Gyro wants to make an impression on Dio, gets reckless, and fall behind. He just can't pass Dio, who is sticking the the absolute fastest racing line. Gyro reflects and chooses to take his own path. Not the path Dio is taking, not the best path, but his own path. Gyro puts his head down and moves forward. He ends up directly behind Dio. But what's changed is that Gyro is no longer an "inheritor". The path Gyro takes ends up being the fastest path. And Dio just so happens to be on that path as well. But Gyro did not arrive on this path because of either of those things- he got here because this is his path. It's a path Gyro found for himself, not one that he found by copying Dio. Gyro is no longer looking at Dio; he's looking past him.
The way that the encounters with Dio and Blackmore conclude doesn't do much for me. They both end when the enemy, out of hubris, ignores a steel ball heading directly for them. It probably means something that both opponents lose in the same way in the same chapter, but I can't really make a connection. Johnny shoots at Dio and then Gyro throws the ball at him. Johnny gets caught and then Gyro throws the ball at Blackmore. There's still stuff to like: the Steel Ball spinning fast enough to evaporate water is awesome. And the way Dio falls, with his horse literally bowing is a compelling image. You know this is going to be an ultimate moment of shame for the guy. He's utterly humiliated here. Gyro is upset because such a shameful loss is going to be the sort of thing that sticks with Dio and makes him come back with a vengeance. But Gyro might not be ready to follow his own path to victory- he likely would have lost without Johnny's interference. Gyro gets mad at Johnny, but what he's truly frustrated with is his own ability to succeed by following his own path. He wins this leg of the race, but it's a moral loss.
Lucy Steel is bad bitch and I love her. Also she's 14, I don't understand why she has to be that young for the story to be like it is. Anyways, Lucy's arc in The Green Tomb was cool and later with the raindrops guy she was ruthless and smart.
Gyro has the prettiest panels, as usual.
I liked the competition between Gyro and Johnny and Diego (!!! look who's back!!! my favorite trashy dino dude!).
The volume features more "traditional" fights and cool escape the building or win the horse ride type of battle scenes.
lucy steel is such an icon imagine some guy being like hahah loser you don't have a stand because you're WEAK and then responding by shooting him with a gun like five times. and you're fourteen and crying the whole time. love her energy
IT SO GOOD MAN. UGH. the rain mary poppins dude is so fucking cool. LUCY STEEL. MY GIRL. MY GOAT. i fucking love her already and i hope to see more cool shit from her. god also i love the dynamic is gyro johnny and diego so much UGH ITS SO FUCKING GOOD. uh anyways … jesus?? yeah. it’s basically jesus?? probably!
Fantastic art in this one! The story really feels like it’s picking up. We’re getting some information on who the corpse parts belong to, and the stand abilities were interesting! Wish they did more with one Mountain Tim, though.

Series: Steel Ball Run #9 Rating: 3 stars - I liked it
This volume continues Lucy trying to keep the President from obtaining the mummified spine, Mountain Tim returns briefly, they fight against Mr. Blackmore and his stand Catch the Rainbow, Johnny and Gyro pass Dio in the race and Johnny and Gyro save Lucy and stop the spine from falling into the President's hands. There was a lot that happened in this volume. While I like that Lucy is trying to keep the mummified pieces away from the President I don't really love her so far, especially since she used Mountain Tim. I will be interested in seeing what happens
okayyyy Lucy Steel is genuinely a g. why she 14 tho? I hope that's revealed at some point because it's getting really weird and I feel like she's gonna get with Johnny. but maybe I'm tripping. that rainbows guy has a pretty fucking crazy sick stand but like if it's not raining does he have to bring a pitcher of water everywhere or? seems like a severe limitation imo... And yet he still died in the rain lmfaoooo.

Probably my least favorite volume of SBR so far. I found a lot of the illustrations were harder to follow than usual (I'm reading in B&W) and while I thought the opening chapter was pretty strong, the other two were just fine.
Certainly not bad and it lays the groundwork for some interesting group dynamics with Lucy down the line, but still worse than what has come before it imo
I enjoyed finally finishing this issue, I had been putting it off but now is the perfect time to finish a book. With everyone stuck inside, it’d be best to do all those things you had been putting off saying “I don’t have time”. For me, that means reading comics I’ve been looking forward to.
wept. i love you mountain tim... except why is he into 14 year olds!!!! i'm praying that lucy is secretly 21 and it's just a rumor that she's 14. Please i can't cope if mountain tim likes kids i can't

Pretty good 7th part of Jojo’s bizarre Adventures and far from the best! This series lacks awesome intense fights and the story of this series was dull😭😁❤️❤️
