Still a shame what happened to Sandman and how his character was rather squandered, but this was one of my favourite fights in the story so far. Johnny's own character growth was rather a big part of it.

Also, nice spin on the Honest Axe story.

I'm not a very big fan of the Silent Way fight. It mostly just consists of Johnny and Gyro laying around and then treading water. The golden ratio is an interesting concept in and of itself and makes enough sense as a way of powering up. But I've never been one for training segments in stories, even if they happen in the midst of a battle.

Gyro telling Johnny to say it's impossible 4 times really jumped out at me and got me excited. But I think that's just because he reminded me of Fritz Perls. I didn't quite follow the epiphany Johnny supposedly had saying it for the fourth time. And I struggle to connect that with the idea of paying your respects. Maybe this is all due to a poor localization? The same goes for Gyro being cut by invisible sounds. I think the idea is that, just like how there are sounds we can't hear, Soundman can create damaging sound-words that we can't see? It wasn't clearly communicated though.

What did connect with me was the reveal of Soundman being the enemy. Norisuke was a good red herring. Soundman being the enemy is a good twist because it's unexpected, but totally fits with his motivations. He's only here to buy his home. Of course he would do whatever it takes to fulfill that goal. But we aren't led to consider that he might work with the president, as he's typically been portrayed as a "good character". But the reality is that Soundman is going to do whatever it takes to protect his people, even if it means attacking Johnny. He makes a strong point, stating that it's capitalism which has led to their conflict. This all could have been avoided if it weren't for imperialism and our obsession with money. Johnny and Soundman have to quarrel- their goals just happen to be mutually exclusive. That said, I never expected him to end up being an enemy or for him to die. I don't know if this is something Araki planned out from the start, but it ended up being a fantastic use of Steel Ball Run's structure. I just wish Soundman had a better stand and a more interesting fight. The moral depravity of Johnny killing a man who is merely trying to save his home from imperialism isn't really explored, as this fight is about Johnny's power-up first and foremost. Soundman does go down as one of my favorite "enemies" though. Thanks in large part to how much I love his design- the colors in particular.

The same can be said of Hot Pants. I don't know what the point of mixing up her gender is, but I'm eager to learn more about what she's up to. I did not expect her to take away the corpse parts so easily. But it sets up some nice intrigue as Gyro's country is seemingly working against him.

The start of Sugar Mountain was a nice change of pace. I'm already familiar with the story the little girl's power is based on, but it still ended up being fun thanks to a nice end-chapter twist, Gryo being a dick, and the little girl's humor.

Even in the few moments where Steel Ball Run doesn't live up to its full potential, it's still pretty damn great.

The conclusion to Silent Way arc in this volume was very underwhelming, but now we are onto Sugar Mountain and I have a good feeling about it. Already the first chapter was amazing.

Obligatory paragraph about how gorgeous the art is and how beautiful Gyro's panels are.

Series: Steel Ball Run #11
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

This volume continues the Silent Way Fight with Johnny and Gyro fighting against dinosaurs and a sound user. Johnny and Gyro spend a lot of time in the water yelling at each other while Johnny tries to figure out how to understand the Golden Rectangle and how to utilize it for his stand abilitie. The biggest surprise in this was Sandman and Hot Pants though. I was not expecting the revelations about them and want to see what happens next with Hot Pants. Overall the Silent Way Fight was an interesting fight but not my favorite out of all the stand battles so far. It will be interesting to see where this Sugar Mountain arc goes.

OMG SANDMAN IS THE OPPONENT!!???? I love that so much sandmans such a sick cunt, my mouth was literally agape reading that reveal. Also his stand looks insanely cool like infinite aura on that guy, he makes tusk look like a goddamn speck of pink dust. I hope he succeeds in everything he ever wishes to do, #KillThoseCaucs. Ok nvm just finished A Silent Way Part 5, gonna kms. I know I shouldn't be rooting for the enemy stand users but why TF was sandman so hyped up and sick if he was just gonna die in 5 chapters :/, #KilledByTheCaucs.

4 estrellas.

In a silent way is a cool stand but just a remake of Koichi’s act 2 from part 4 and in a silent way got carried by dios dinosaurs helping the sound travel. Still a great volume ending getting to see tusk evolve to act 2 and we finally understand the golden ratio and how gyro has used it all along.
