In a school dominated by ruthless martial art teams, one rogue club must fight the odds to stay alive!
At the toughest high school in Tokyo, only the strong survive.
In one unusual school, education takes a backseat to brawling, as warring clubs wreak havoc in the hallways and chaos in the classrooms, all in a bid to be the coolest club in school! Although they often contribute their fair share of chaos, only one group of students stems the tide of violence in this untames outpost: the Juken Club!
Oh! great, whose real name is Ito Ōgure (大暮維人 Ōgure Ito) is a Japanese manga artist most recognized for the manga series Tenjho Tenge and Air Gear. In 2006, he received the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen for Air Gear. Apart from working with manga, he designed some of the alternate character outfits in the PlayStation 2 version of Namco's 3D fighting game Tekken 5, and a guest character in Soul Calibur IV named Ashlotte.
His pseudonym "Oh! great" is a play on words. His pen name, written in Japanese order, is "Ōgure Ito", which is pronounced similarly to and can be romanized the same as the Japanese rendering of the English words "Oh great," ōgurēto. Furthermore, "Oh" can mean "king" in Japanese, making it possible to read the name as "the great king".
***It should be noted that I read a fan translated version in which no one tried to "tame down" this manga (Yeah, I'm looking at you CMX. Feel. The. Shame.) Thank goodness for purists.***
Boobs. Breasts. Tits. Yahoos. Whatever. There I've addressed the supersized lady parts found in this series. To be honest anytime I see an anime or manga with breasts of these proportions I can't take it seriously. They’re there to make me laugh and create a fun drinking game. (You know for every jiggle or "boing" take a shot. This gets you pretty drunk awfully fast with some series . . . ) It was one such drinking game that introduced me to Tenjho Tenge waaaaaaaaay back when. Funny thing was, I was actually interested in the storyline. Yet it's another anime that leaves you hanging. So years later I decided to finally check out the manga to get the full story.
Despite the horribly over large cleavage, the art is really decent. The action scenes play out well and they look great! Too many action manga are actually ruined by the art featured in the action scenes. My only compliant is that all the females tend to look the same, especially in this volume. They've all got mega huge bazookas, but their faces all look the same. I get two of the girls Aya and Maya are sisters, but Bob's girlfriend looks just like them! In fact when I suddenly saw this girl pop up all nude I thought why is Aya getting it on? Oh, and she cut her hair? Despite my irks about the overly done cut out girl looks, I like that the women in this manga can be just as tough as the men. Maya even kicks some serious booty!
Everyone gives me a hard time that I like the anime . . . because of the story. But there is a story! This first volume hints at the past of the school and the council as some punishment is dealt out on Bob and Nagi. Manga about fighting schools are kind of my guilty pleasure, but so few try to do much besides overly big bosomed girls and crazy fights. I enjoy that there's some back story yet to be revealed and that I find each character intriguing. Oh, and if you're a fan of the anime be warned. The anime doesn't play out the nudity, but the manga does. There's lots of violence, smut (which could have been more sexy if the hooters were more realistic, but I know it's not targeted towards me as the audience in mind), and some mysteries!
Looks like I'm reading some pretty ESL-tier fan-translation instead of either of the two official English releases (눈‸눈)
I picked up Tenjou Tenge partly because I'm reading Oh!Great's latest two manga, but also because I just somewhat blindly copped the Blu-ray of Madhouse's anime adaptation. So I wanted to at least check out Volume 1 to make sure my purchase wasn't too bad an idea.
I don't know what to expect of this manga, other than semi-supernatural martial arts and probably some ass and/or titties. My guesses were right so far, at least! I must say, I was not actually expecting the yankī element for Nagi or Makihara. From what little I knew of the manga beforehand, I assumed it would lean close to Ikkitousen and have the Natsume sisters as primary focal characters, or else Takayanagi would be the central hero, being the standard black-haired young man in a lot of manga like this (you know, because most Japanese, and thus most manga readers, are black-haired young men, and fewer are bleached-blonde juvenile delinquents, and fewer still are actual black people...). At the very least, Takayanagi is established as one of the strongest of the main heroes, but it feels more like Nagi will be the guy, and that this early phase of the manga will be about his growing strength, especially learning about chi and stuff.
Something really weird to me, or at least made weird by the shitty translation I read: you get this dude Ryuzaki set up as a major villain, working as an "Enforcer" for the school, but then he's essentially off-screened by Maya before Souichirou and Bob have a chance to learn anything and take revenge.
****
Panties and ass on the cover...!
Maya boobs growing and flipping before she transforms...!
Aya naked boobies...!
Aya upskirt...!!!!! 🥵
Chiaki has nice boobs and butt, but... idk, I don't care for characters who are into the sorts of things she's into ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯

Re-reading this after more than 20 years. I already had some issues back then, but I couldn't fully articulate it because I was literally still a kid and I ignored any red flags because "Yay, manga and fighting, so cool!"
The plot is weak and cliched, the art style is average at best, the fanservice and depiction of women is sexist as fuck and the characters are insufferable - yes, all of them. The only redeeming quality of the later volumes (I have never finished the series tbh) is that the art style/quality improves considerably, but all the other elements remain atrocious. It's vapid and quite honestly one of the most nonsensical, convoluted and needlessly complicated "plots" I have ever read. It's been more than 20 years and I still don't understand the logic of the world and what the fuck the narrative is supposed to be beyond "muscular guys and big-titted women do martial arts and also panty shots".
This was popular because it came out during a very specific moment in popular culture and because half-naked/naked women sell well. Honestly, this manga has always been better as a collection of well-drawn images and if you like the art style, just collect some images online and skip the "story". It's literally not worth your time if you just want some fanservice/soft porn.
He visto el anime hace varios años. Asi que ya estoy algo familiarizada con los personajes.
Tenemos a Aya y Maya Natsume.

I really loved a lot of the characters in this manga, and it only gets better as you progress. Naturally since it is a shounen, there is lots of fighting involved.
Have you had this moment when you start reading something for one genre but end up falling into the story because of another? Let's just say that this story ended up on my reading list very randomly. I was looking for a smut manga that I haven't read, and if you ask my friends there's no such thing. but indeed there do exist some, either because they're not fully uploaded or because I haven't heard about them.
But let me get back to the story; Do you know Air Gear? If yes, then it's by the same author. And have you read Breaker and Breaker: New Waves? (I should do the review on at least one...) Anyway, if you are a fan of shounen with Martial Arts, some explicit gore scenes and a mystery that can kill your brain, be my guest you'll love this story. You might have some difficulty adjusting to the drawing if you're new to the manga world as it started publishing in 1997. But once you get into it, you won't care about it and throughout it, the drawing significantly improved, especially in the moments where there's cutting of flesh or something altogether epic happening! Also get ready for getting so lost you'll have no idea what's going on.
The story starts quite okay, there are two delinquent who transfer to a school that is said to be heaven for fighters. But being delinquent all they want is to become the bosses of the school. However, they're beaten by a small girl and end up in an adventure they never thought was possible. The story, the characters and pretty much everything about it, is as complex as hell. It's dark, twisted to the core, but so interesting and compelling you just don't want to stop reading! remember at one point when we start getting flashbacks, everything started gradually not making any sense. And only until final 5 chapters I was so lost with everything that was happening! And it wasn't helping when I was reading the comments on each page. Though it was fabulous that the drawing was getting more and more epic!
Are you wondering about romance? well, the romance is present, but unfortunately, we don't see it blooming as much as we wish to. Initially, all couples are so mixed up with love interests that you don't even know whom to ship with whom. I had two couples that I wanted to see, did I? That's another question. If you shipped one exact couple the last chapter, well, actually the extra will make you happy and sad.
Lastly, if you are still doubting whether or not to read this awesome story, well I can't give you any more reasons than I have mentioned. Fans of shounen, if you haven't read this story, now's your chance! enjoy it to your heart's content and don't forget to share your thoughts below! Stay tuned for more reviews as well as promos! Don't miss your next favourite book or manga! Happy reading!
A real surprise. I certainly expected the oldschool art just by looking at the cover and just as much did I expect some fan service, but this manga certainly went a little further. It shows quite the nudity and even sex and addresses difficult topics like rape, which I most definitely didn't expect. Other than that it's very hard to identify the protagonist - so far we have quite a few. The story basis isn't too exciting, but I'm hooked by the adult approach.
Big nope for me. Trigger warning- rape. That the girl then immediately pretends didn’t happen. Far as I can tell, the entire point was just to show how bad the bad guy is. No thanks. Rape is not a plot point to just randomly throw in. I googled and I think they eventually beat him up for it but I’m not sticking around to find out more.
The storyline of this entire manga doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Also, it jumps around a lot... people fight for no reason, or they'll fight, then cut away and finish it as a flashback later... Then later in the series they just start piling on random extra fighters that come out of nowhere.
The fights themselves are pretty weird too. Some people seem to win based on weird mystical destinies, others come out of nowhere to win. Sometimes physical damage is real, sometimes they seem to forget they've just been disemboweled. There's hardly ever any blood, even when limbs get amputated or sliced into bits, which happens a lot. Really, people are way too okay with all the amputations... then some people get mechanical replacements and others don't. Strange. Lots of fan-service...
This is not the first I'm reading this manga. I love it and it's my favorite manga. What mostly angers me that people only see boobs and panty shots in this manga but that's only at the first glance. First volume don't give us too much plot but already settles main characters. It does look like borderline hentai manga but author sometimes dabbles in hentai manga so that's no surprise there. We can find humor and some erotic scenes but storyline is much deeper than that if reader is ready to concentrate instead of drooling over some naked body drawings. Love it, love it.
Tenjho Tenge, while having some good ideas and artwork, fails to go above the average shonen battle manga, which it tries to make up for with gratuitous nudity to appeal to the seinen crowd. I don't blame CMX for trying to censor this for the Naruto crowd (even still, parents might not like some of the fanservice and risque scenes which were left in). This manga has failed to capture my interest.
Maybe I'll pick up the next volume from the library on a rainy day.

Artwork on the cover was what you would expect from a manga, the Story artwork was better than some I have read.
Overall the book was a pleasure to read. The story flowed well. I wont spoil it for you but would recommend it. All im going to say is treat the book as the introduction to the story, not the whole story.
Fascinating in how utterly it lacks coherency of plot or theme. You never know what's going to happen because the author has even less idea and may not remember what he wrote last chapter.
