This play was what Sturges based his film “Christmas in July” on. Like Sturges’ best work, the play has fast, character-based witty banter, amazing physical comedy (Preston Sturges was a big fan of slapstick) and such a love of humanity that the open-hearted, sincere speeches will make your jaw drop. The only problem with this early work of his is the blackout sketch ending. The film sets up the pow of the twist ending better.
Still A- Preston Sturges is better than quite a bit of “theatrical comedies” of the era.
A nice small-cast play. Definitely would work for something along the lines of a class show. I think these characters are so wacky, and the variety of accents and dialects seems like great fun. The plot is a little slow, to the point where almost nothing really happens until act 2, so I suppose it could use a little trimming. But I’d be interested in seeing it performed
