Professor Charlotte “Charlie” Reynolds assumes that the weather is the only thing she has to worry about when she prepares to lead the last backpacking group of the season up Tempest Mountain. Joined at the last minute by sinfully sexy Jake Nelson and his beautiful young companion, Charlie is caught up in a dangerous whirlwind of nature, illicit activities and a man she can’t seem to resist.
Agent Jake Nelson knows his latest mission to secure evidence will be dangerous and potentially put the entire group of hikers at risk. When the feisty Dr. Reynolds catches his eye, he’s torn between the need to protect and the desire to possess.
Jamie works full-time for local government doing database administration and a little web programming. In her free time, she writes…a lot. Mainly romantic suspense, erotic romance, thrillers/horror, and youth action/adventure. I run a micro-publishing company called Brazen Snake Books, and publish a few friends as well as my own books.
I also love to crochet & knit (and shop for yarn!), read, watch Netflix/Amazon/HBO (who doesn’t?), and I collect Smurfs and comic books. I have a husband and two dogs – all of whom keep me amused on a daily basis. I like to cook, I love to eat, and I’m a total tea and wine snob. I have piercings and tattoos and just recently took up target archery for fun.
And of course I love to read. Pretty much anything I can get my hands on. I always have a book or two in progress.
I read Tempest in a single sitting - that's saying something, given that I usually only read in short bursts on my lunch breaks!
The tension between Charlie and Jake is evident from the beginning of the story. Initially, I was concerned that the author might be building up to something she couldn't maintain, but each of their intimate encounters had the same intensity. The language and descriptions used were enough to get her point across, but definitely not the over-the-top cliches that are seen far too often in romance novels.
Adrienne, who appeared rather vapid and useless in the first chapter, went on to prove her worth. I appreciated the fact that she was portrayed consistently younger than the rest of the group, with her reactions more like what I would expect from a teenager, rather than an adult.
There were a few times that I had to go back and re-read a scene, particularly the ones that featured the full hiking group. However, the author managed to give every character a unique name, making it much easier to follow the large cast.
Personally, I didn't like the encounters with wild animals, but that was because they were written so well that they freaked me out a bit - I am definitely not a nature-lover. Congratulations to Jamie for making me cringe!
Unfortunately, there seemed to be a few lines missing from the version that I read. I downloaded the .rtf version from Smashwords, because I don't have an actual e-reader. Luckily, they were at the end of paragraphs, and did not slow down the pace too much.
Aside from the small formatting issue, I enjoyed reading Tempest. If you like your intrigue with a side of romance (or your romance with a side of intrigue!), this is a good choice for you!
Tempest is a book you could read in one sitting, and it would keep you engaged the entire time. The action comes into play early, and keeps a steady momentum throughout, with some truly memorable moments.
Professor Charlotte “Charlie” Reynolds is leading a group of hikers up Tempest Mountain. Among the group is Jake Nelson, a man to whom Charlie feels an irresistible pull. Unfortunately he is accompanied by the beautiful and much younger Adrienne.
This would have to be the hiking trip from hell. So much goes wrong - fast. Jake turns out to be a special agent, acting as bodyguard to protect Adrienne, which puts the rest of the group in danger. Not only are they hunted by the bad guys who want to get to Adrienne, but the wild animals seem to want to share in the action, too.
Given this was a novella, the hero and heroine needed to establish a connection fairly quickly, and I thought the author handled this really well. Of necessity, there was an immediate ‘connection’ between the two, but they did not fall into insta-lust and pounce on each other at the first opportunity.
I wouldn’t call this an erotic novel, either. It was not a book where the plot existed only to take the reader from one sex scene to the next. In fact, for reasons unknown, I had expected more love scenes than there was – although I’m not complaining. The first such scene was one of the hottest I’ve read in a while, and the H/h were in separate tents!
Charlie was a fairly realistic character – she was neither a kick-ass heroine, nor helpless. She was someone who was happy to take charge and wanted to pull her weight, but also recognised her own limitations and welcomed help when she was in need. Charlie went through a lot in a short space of time, and Jake provided some much needed strength and comfort.
I also liked that the hero, Jake, was not a study in super-human perfection and made mistakes. I appreciate that sort of realism. Unfortunately, he made the same mistake of leaving his charge unprotected one too many times for the realism to stick. If you leave the witness you are protecting alone once, and she comes to harm, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t do it again. And probably not to have sex, either.
Also, in the interest of realism, you would not book the hike you were using as cover under the actual name of the witness you are protecting. I'm sure the FBI trains their agents better than this, or they at least are able to use their own common sense.
None of this ruined the story for me, though. It written in such a way that it was very easy to just roll with it. What did come close, however, was the heroine’s inexplicable urge to giggle in times of extreme danger. I understand people can have uncontrolled irrational emotional responses in heightened states, however it wasn’t portrayed that way here.
It is tough to pull off a satisfying novella length story, and it is probably only fair to make allowances for the limitations. In a full-length novel, I may have down-graded my rating for some of detail that otherwise would have been lacking, but all in all I think Jamie DeBree produced an entertaining read and made the most of the pages available. I would be really interested to see what she could do with a full-length novel.

Normally I have a lot of trouble with Romantic Suspense novels. Normally either the Romance part or the suspense part bugs me. Such was not the case with Tempest. This novella managed to capture what romantic suspense is supposed to have : action, adventure, romance and suspense. In my experience, so few romantic suspense books manage to do all three successfully. In Tempest there were bear attacks, wolf attacks and bad guys with guns, and a super hot undercover agent to rescue everyone. What more could you ask for?
Dr. Charlie Reynolds leads groups of hikers up Mt. Tempest in the summer when she isn't working. She is a bit annoyed with this group because two of the hikers are late and she just wants to get up the mountain before the weather turns bad. When Jake and Adrienne, the two hikers who were late finally arrive Charlie thinks Jake is hot, but thinks he's dating Adrienne. She's immediately put off by him because Adrienne is so young. Charlie also doesn't like him because of his high handiness with Adrienne when she gets hurt on the trail. She then finds out that Jake and Adrienne aren't just normal backpackers. They are actually there on a secret mission that could possibly endanger all of them.
When Jake helps Charlie recover from injuries she finds a softer side of him that she didn't think was possible to be there. He helps her with the others on the backpacking trip, and finds herself liking him just a bit. While the hike goes on and her injuries from the attack preventing her taking lead on the hike like she would like, he takes charge and sends Adrienne to help her. This is when the action starts to really happen, and things take off fast. I would say more-but since this is a novella, I don't want to spoil anything by saying more. Lets just say that Jake earns his worth and Charlie no longer dislikes him for his high handiness. :)
Sometimes with novellas it's hard to capture the chemistry between the hero and the heroine, but that's not the case with Tempest. Charlie and Jake are great because they are so used to being the ones in control that it's great seeing them gradually come to trust each other and rely on someone else. I really enjoyed that the POV changed between both Charlie and Jake because it felt like I got to know each character a lot better then if the story had been told from Charlie's POV. Another thing I really enjoyed was that the secondary characters weren't forgotten. So often in novellas they are either totally forgotten or just there for part of the story. There is a lot going on both character wise and story wise but it all works to make for a fun read.
Favorite quote: He pulsed inside her as she met his gaze, shocked at the intensity staring back at her. "You're mine, Charlotte - when this is over, everyone is safe and we're off this damn mountain, it might take a while to get things sorted out. But I'll come to you. Promise you'll wait for me - that you'll give whatever this is a chance."
This is one of those books that play out like a movie in my mind. The author did an excellent job of making everything feel real without getting bogged down in the description (which is something I hate). I'm more of a "get to the action" kind of girl, and this book is full of action.
The chemistry between Charlie and Jake well very well executed, and I happened to enjoy the masturbation scene. I never see that in a romance unless it's an erotic romance. I thought the sex scenes were just right for the story too. I don't mind graphic sex scenes, and there was an underlying emotional connection as he wanted to do more than "claim" her body. So it wasn't just sex for the sake of sex.
But among all of this, there was also the drug farm, and Charlie, Jake, and the group (esp. Adrienne who was a very special member of the group) had to fight against the bad guys. And yes, there were some animals out there that posed a threat as well. I thought the story was wrapped up nicely and well written with believable situations and characters. Nothing seemed rushed, and there were no sagging middles. If you like action, suspense, and great sex, I'd say this is the book for you.
The story seemed to have a continuity problem to me. Characters escaped from dangerous situations without explanation and in one chapter the heroine was rescued from capture before being captured in the next chapter.
I love books that blend adventure with romance. This was a perfect mix of tension, action, and romance. But I think what I loved most about it was the fact that the heroine, Charlie, went through so much but never gave up. We should all have her kind of courage. :-)
