In this children's book, a sequel to Rusty Flies South, Rusty returns to Honeysuckle farm. On the last page of Rusty Flies South Esmerelda, one of the farm cows, was 'looking forward to seeing Rusty next summer' and Rusty's Return starts with welcoming her back. The weather is very cold but, with the help of Ned, Rusty is soon ready for summer.
