Sheets #3

Lights

Rate this book
Marjorie, Eliza, and Wendell the ghost are back to uncover the secrets of Wendell’s human life in the third and final heartwarming installment of the Sheets trilogy.

Marjorie Glatt’s life was forever changed the day she discovered a group of ghosts hiding in her family’s laundromat. One of those ghosts was a lonely phantom who turned into Marjorie’s best friend. When he and Marjorie are joined by ghost-enthusiast Eliza Duncan, the three friends band together in friendship, bravery, and all things paranormal.

Wendell died far too young and now must wander the Land of Humans with nothing more than a sheet for a body. He knows how he died—a tragic drowning accident—but lately he’s grown curious about his past life. He wants to know more about why he died, not just how he died. It’s not easy, though, since Wendell’s memory of his human life has grown increasingly blurry. With Marjorie and Eliza’s help, he sets out on a journey to learn more.

In a Nutshell: A nice finish to the trilogy, though it takes a while to get going. As the focus is on Wendell, I was motivated to read on.

Story Synopsis:
The plot takes place immediately after the events of the second book.
Marjorie and Eliza are still stumbling into being friends. And Wendell is still trying to come to terms with Marjorie having more friends in her life. But all three are united in one idea – they need to find out more about Wendell’s death as his memory of his human life is growing hazy. Eliza’s ghostly interests and Marjorie’s sincerity might just provide a resolution, but things turn somewhat problematic when Marjorie becomes friends with two girls who used to bully Eliza.

The storyline is almost as strong as it was in Sheets, the first book of this series. However, the pacing is more like it was in the second book – Delicates, which is why we need to have a lot of patience in the first half of the book.

‘Delicates’ made the mistake of putting Wendell’s track on the backburner, but ‘Lights’ shines the spotlight (or maybe, the ghostlight) on him yet again, thereby immediately enhancing the impact of the story. Wendell’s spirit [pun intended] is captured beautifully, especially in the backstories where his childhood adventures and imaginative mind are displayed. I wish we could have had some kind of closure regarding Wendell’s family, but all mysteries in life aren’t meant to be sorted out, and the end of his track as is, is heartwarming though bittersweet.

Marjorie is somewhat better in this book as compared to the earlier book, but only in the second half. The initial pages see her exactly as she was in ‘Delicates’, caught between two friends and lying to each of them in a silly attempt to keep them satisfied, but ending up hurting their feelings anyway. The change in her attitude occurs after she asks her dad for advice when she feels stuck. I hope kids see a little lesson in that. Most parents are happy to help or guide you and all you need to do is ask. Compromising on your feelings to keep friends happy is never a solution. Eliza also learns some great lessons courtesy her dad. I loved the line he tells her about being supportive working both ways. Both the dads have minimal roles in this book, but they end up leaving their mark.

While there are no major dark themes this time around unlike the first two editions, there are still plenty of emotional moments. Through Marjorie’s dilemma of choosing between her friends and Eliza’s conundrums over fitting in, we also get some nice thoughts and quotable quotes to mull over.

The illustrations, while not that impressive in the first two books as well, are really disappointing this time around. It was so tough for me to believe that most characters in this book were teenagers. The faces are not convincing at all. Marjorie’s hair is also quite weird. This is one graphic novel series where the plot has remained my main motivator to move ahead. Then again, art is always a subjective taste, so maybe these graphics will work exceptionally with other readers.

You might remember that I had been reading this series with my little one in tow. After the lacklustre second book, she was not in the mood to read this at all. When I finally managed to convince her, she did join me but kept complaining about how boring it was, for more than 200 pages. It was only the ending that made her a little happy for her favourite Wendell. But she refused to commit to a rating this time around. 😄

For me, this was a good finale to the series, and should make fans happy if they can keep their patience with the slower first half. The story generates a variety of emotions, ranging from laughter to tears, and the climax makes the journey worthwhile.

Recommended only to those who have read and enjoyed the first two volumes as this is not a standalone.

3.5 stars. (Rounding down because I genuinely hated the illustrations except for Wendell and the ghost gang.)

My thanks to Oni Press and NetGalley for the DRC of “Lights”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

***NO SPOILERS***

Young teen Marjorie Glatt, Wendell the ghost, and their friend Eliza share the spotlight In Lights, the final book rounding out the Sheets trilogy. Like book two, Lights builds on what came before it without retreading old ground. The first two books have a sad, contemplative tone, and this latest book sticks to that but takes a darker turn as focus shifts mostly to Wendell’s cause of death. He knows he drowned but has forgotten the details surrounding the drowning. He’s left with only a vague feeling of unease that leads the trio to suspect foul play and a commitment to uncovering the truth. Lights delves into Wendell’s unusual backstory on the way to solving the mystery.

With this trilogy Thummler has shown a nuanced understanding of the complicated and mixed feelings that arise in friendships. Marjorie’s struggles with her clique-ish friend group, a significant part of book two, have been replaced by a different kind of social struggle. She’s now solidly friends with book two’s awkward outcast at school, Eliza. But in one of the book’s realer moments, Marjorie wishes for friends with typical teen interests while brooding over how overwhelming she finds Eliza and the girl’s passion: ghost-hunting. This problem is fortunately solved in a happy way, but not without some realistic tension initially.

Lights also shows how Marjorie, her father, and her brother have moved forward after being brought to their knees when Marjorie’s mom dies. Whereas in book one the father was always too depressed to leave his bedroom, in book two he’s regained some emotional strength, and by book three he’s regained even more. Marjorie and her brother have walked a similar path.

This final book has no loose ends, and everyone experiences some kind of victory. Wendell gets closure; Marjorie has found a comfortable middle ground in her friendships; Eliza has friends; and the father has established a new normal. Each book has its place and feels essential in the story of Marjorie Glatt, and Lights closes out this trilogy naturally.

the good news is that this finale to the sheets series has what we've been eagerly awaiting: backstory for our sweet dead ghost boy, wendell! the bad news is that his backstory is sad as hell! (although that might not be bad news, depending on how you roll)

overall, this volume of the series is rather sad. marjorie and eliza's friendship reaches a low point when marjorie reconnects with her former friends who used to bully eliza. their relationship is emotionally fraught as eliza is repeatedly deprioritized. meanwhile wendell is torn between the two, as well as torn up inside as he stirs up memories of his life, and tries to solve the mystery of his death.

and oh my goodness, wendell is so earnest and funny. flashback kiddo wendell is so fucking alive, soft and vulnerable, and nearly as cute as ghostie wendell.

eliza is a fantastic character too, so brave and clever and thoughtful. she's also funny as hell. i love the moment where marjorie suggests they become friendly with theater staff members to acquire information to aid in their investigation, and eliza snaps back, "BEFRIEND them? That could take years." she always keeps it real and i love her.

the vibes are impeccable, as usual. moody suburban landscapes are colored in beautiful pinks and purples and blues. and this time we have icy november's cold, dirty snowdrift blues.

i think each book in this series is more mature and emotionally nuanced than the last. the original sheets has a cartoonishly evil villain, but this one has a complicated villain whom we learn is not wholly bad. thummler's writing has come a long way.

i really loved the quiet solemnity of this grand finale. we're left with bittersweet closure, and the message that friends are like lights, helping keep the darkness away 😭

Thank you to Netgalley and Oni Press for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A rich and emotional conclusion to the series, which deepens the themes of friendship, grief, and healing. I loved seeing Marjorie find ways to balance her commitments to both the living and the dead, Eliza learning that compromise is part of any relationship, and Wendell unraveling the truth of his own story. Thummler has grown a lot as a storyteller over the course of writing and drawing this trilogy. This is the quietest and most beautiful volume so far, and my favorite of the three. The art is absolutely next level, both in terms of color panels and page design. I was lucky enough to get to read an advanced copy for review; the book is due out in September 2023.

This conclusion to the series reminds me of the ending of The Return of the King from the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. A happy sad ending? You know what I mean. I barely held back the waterworks but we all know life (and afterlife) goes on. In this final book we learn, through vigorous investigating and research, the origins and tragic end of Wendell's life. Marj and Eliza experience some friction in their friendship when Marj is forced and later welcomes new old friends, Sid & Sasha. Marj tries to balance the two very different friendships and learns what we all know, you can't please everybody. Eliza learns the value of compromise and that it's okay to have more friends in your life. Overall, a very heartwarming end to the Ghostly Series. I highly recommend the entire series if you haven't already read them. The artwork is lovely in tones and shades very conducive to its ghostly atmosphere. Also the storytelling delivers a rollercoaster ride of gut-punching, poignant beauty that represents humanity in all its various nuances.

I unfortunately didn't care much for this one and feel that this one could probably be skipped. The only thing really interesting about this one is that you find out how Wendel died and where he came from. There were also some mild mystery scenes that were interesting. But outside of that, just basic mundane things that teenagers do and experience. And I found myself a little bored through a good portion of it and was in a hurry for it to be over.
There's nothing inherently bad with Lights. It's not a bad graphic novel. In fact the art work (just like in the first two) is absolutely gorgeous! I just found myself bored through a lot of it, sadly. And I wanted so badly to like this one as much, if not more than Delicates! 😔 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is a Paranormal Graphic Novel, and this is the third book in the Sheets series. I have read the first two books in this series. I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this one was just ok for me. I had a very hard time getting into this book. I am not sure why I did not connect to this book. I got an e-book arc of this book, but I did buy a copy of this book as well.

first of all thank you SO much to OniPress and Netgalley for a copy of the arc in exchange for an honest review 🥹

*potential spoilers if you haven't read the previous 2!*

This one hit me in the feels so hard. Wendell is just such a sweet character and I absolutely adored finding out how he died and seeing more into his short life. We continued to grow with the characters as they discover more about themselves and what friendship really means. I was tearing up at the end, such an amazing and wholesome trilogy that I would recommend to everyone of all ages!

Lights is the third and final installment in the YA Fantasy/Paranormal graphic novel trilogy, Sheets. I have really enjoyed the first 2 graphic novels, but this one really hit me in the feels. It was heartwarming like the previous installments, but I was not expecting it to be so emotional too. The artistry and colors are both reminiscent of the first two volumes of this series, with a nostalgic 80s My Little Pony palette of pastels.

This time around we finally get to find out what exactly happened to our dearly departed Wendell. I loved how the flashback scenes were in a different color scheme. The journey to finding the truth was mysterious, uneasy, heartbreaking, but necessary for Wendell to finally find peace.

Now that the trilogy has come to a close, it's bittersweet. I will miss Marjorie, Eliza, and Wendell. Alas, all good things must come to an end, but it ended on a beautiful and poignant note - even in the darkest of times, there's always a glimmer of light.

This trilogy is perfect for middle grade readers all the way to adults. I cannot recommend it enough.

Thank you NetGalley @netgalley, Oni Press @onipress, and Brenna Thummler for the eARC.

I really liked the storyline of uncovering what happened to Wendell. The friendship storyline between Marjorie and Eliza felt a little repetitive from the previous volumes.
I liked the art style a lot and that the color schemes changed between the past and present scenes. This was a sweet and heartwarming story.

"It’s strange how much power darkness has over the light."

Our ghost bestie, Wendell, is back and he sends us on quite the adventure. We found out how he passed but now he wants to know why. Was is an accident? Murder? A grand conspiracy? With the help of his two new best friends, they all come together to help Wendell piece together his life and his untimely end. With this series we know that it’ll include a lot of drama and lots of heart.

Tell me why I’m sitting here on a Tuesday afternoon with tears streaming down my face. This series always brings out my emotions and I’ve cried with every single book in this series. The ending of this one crushed my soul (in a good way) and it had my emotions bubbling over. It shows us the true meaning of friendship and that’s all we want out of life. To find the people we mesh with best.

Lights was such a fantastic end to an amazing series. I never thought a graphic novel would hit me so hard and then Sheets shows up and makes me question it all. I’m going to miss Wendell. I know that this series will always hold a special place in my heart.

Oh man, I really did not want this series to come to an end! The main theme of this book was friendship and healing, and just as with the themes the first two books embodied, it was handled beautifully. Wendell was a much more central character to this book compared to his more subdued role in the second installment, and I loved to see that because he is definitely my favourite character in this series. We find out why Wendell died in this installment and it was really beautiful to see him understand what happened to him and come to terms with his death. The artwork was of course gorgeous, with a really lovely colour palette, and I loved how the colour palette switched from cold colours in present day, to warm colours when we were seeing flashbacks to Wendell's life. This graphic novel series is really fantastic, and I hope to see much more from Brenna Thummler in the future!

This was a fantastic end to the trilogy, the story made me laugh and cry.
A great story about grief, healing, friendship, and finding light through the darkness!

I loved diving deeper into Wendell’s life and finding out what happened to him, although it did make me sob 😭 I also enjoyed watching Marjorie grow compared to books 1 and 2! I enjoyed this book slightly more than Delicates, simply because we got more Wendell 👻

The imagery and way Thummler so simply expressed emotions through single images was once again really well done. I’m sad the series is over but thought it was beautifully wrapped up 💗

I’ll definitely be reading more from Thummler and watching for her next book! Thanks to her, I discovered I actually really love graphic novels and am so excited to continue exploring the genre 🥰

This was just fine. The illustrations were nice, I liked the Halloween themed carnival/amusement park, but a lot of this book focused on what happened to Wendell, and I just wasn't that interested. I think a younger age demographic might enjoy it more.

This might be the most melancholy and death-obsessed trilogy you'll find the in the juvenile graphic novel section. And the books are so thick and slow, I can't imagine most children having the patience to get through them. But, hey, they work for me.

Wendell Hofferly -- Casper the friendly ghost for the 21st century -- is set on finding out the reason behind his death, and his best friend, Marjorie, is trying to help him, but she gets distracted navigating the precarious world of eighth-grade friendships.

The author goes a little overboard trying to give the "Lights" of the title multiple meanings in the book, but it's a satisfying conclusion to an interesting if downbeat series.

I enjoyed Wendell's back story and learning more about how he died, but Eliza and Sid just ruined the whole book. Eliza was such a toxic friend who manipulated Marjorie into feeling guilty for having other friends and she played the victim. She also was a major stalker and committed breaking and entering into the dance school office.

Sid was just a braindead character to begin with.

Lights is the third and concluding volume of the Sheets trilogy.

I was so excited for this book and to find out more about Wendell's story! It was so heart-breaking to discover how he died, and it truly got me close to tears.

The art style as usual is very beautiful and I especially loved this volume because it is set in winter and there are so many beautiful landscapes full of snow, it is truly gorgeous.

I also loved seeing the development of Marjorie and Eliza's friendship after the events of Delicates, I feel like they both have grown so much.

Overall, this is also a very bittersweet volume because it's the last one, and I myself don't fare really well with endings of things. They make me too sad. But it was truly a very good closing we got here, the last few pages left me feeling very emotional.

I'm so glad this series of books exists, I wish I got to read them when I was 14, but I'm glad the young people of today can have access to such a beautiful story, not just because of the visual part, but the themes that are discussed and how they are presented in the story.

The Sheets trilogy will always remain one of my favorite graphic novel series! I recommend it a lot!
