Some recent article on burnout and hustle culture referenced this 50-year-old book, which I had to order, but well worth it. He interviews ~100 people back in the late 70s who are all grappling with the same “what am I doing all this ‘work’ for?” questions we are today. Pre-internet, pre-email, and pre-Slack, but still stressed and disillusioned. This is the book that I want to hand to people who recoil, asking “but what would you DO?!” if I ever casually mention retiring. Of course, they would not have the time or mental energy to read it.
