Men feared monsters. Yet fear made men do monstrous things.
The gods are gone, leaving three races divided, broken, and without balance. All that remains is a curse. One to haunt and devour the mortals for their unholy betrayal.
A Mortal Girl. . .
Traifton has two rules: Never leave the safety of the walls and never enter the Wylan Woods. Those who enter never return. Willa Thesalor is left with an impossible choice. Be killed by the monsters hiding beneath pretty lies and faces, or enter the woods and face its woes.
An Elf Prince. . .
Kauis Sylpetor is a prince with no kingdom to rule. He can feel his immortality and magic slipping slowly from his grasp. When the royal elf finds himself back in the cursed land of Kalandrae, he discovers something more addicting than his plans for retribution. Power. But to attain it, he must make a bargain and risk sacrificing all he has ever known and loved in the process.
A Fae Prince. . .
Sorean Valkian is a troubled prince with rare and unruly magic. He is days away from becoming the king of a hidden realm. Before taking the crown, Sorean must confirm the whispers about the worsening Wylan Woods. And why his mother has kept their kingdom off of the maps for centuries. But heavy is the bearer of a secret crown once Sorean uncovers more questions than answers within the god’s tainted lands.
When Kingdoms Fall is a New Adult Fantasy series intended for audiences 18+ and older. This is book 1 in a series
Callie Dahl is the American author of the enthralling new adult fantasy series When Kingdoms Fall. She is so excited to have you fall in love with her chaotic little monsters and deities within the Wylan Woods.
Callie is a neurodivergent, overly caffeinated photographer who resides in Montana with her two small rescue dogs. She is actively searching for magic within the mundane, whether in the mountains with her camera or within her writing hobbit hole.
Talk about suffering, I don’t think I’ve ever read a story with an FMC who has had more bad luck thrown at her than Callie Dahl threw at our girl Willa. She is bullied, beaten, branded, and ostracized all in the first few pages alone! And that is just the tip of the iceberg of all the painful and near-death experiences our girl goes through on these pages.
This is a triple POV story that follows a Human girl, an Elf Prince, and a Fae Prince, however, most of the story is centred on our girl. Willa lives in Traifton and is outcast by the town for venturing into the Wylan Woods, a place no one should ever enter due to the Corruption brought on by “man” that caused the Gods to leave the land. She is given a mysterious hair clip by her friend and soon a stranger comes into the town, Kauis. This is no ordinary man but an Elf, whose race hasn’t been seen for over 500 years. Soon Willa finds herself on the run and lands up in the very woods she has been told to avoid, where she runs into Sorean. A Fae that has been missing just as long as the gods have been gone.
The tropes one can expect: ⟴ Fae and Elves ⟴ Epic “Dark” High Fantasy ⟴ Cursed Land and Monsters ⟴ Slow Burn and Tension ⟴ Enemies to Lovers ⟴ Only One Bed
You know the saying “How long would you survive in the world of a book?” Well, I’d be dead in the first hour if I was thrown into this world as everything BASICALLY WANTS TO KILL YOU!
The writing in this is stunning but gritty and raw! It’s captivating but harsh at the same time. I loved the way that through the writing you can feel this is about a world where the Gods have left and everything is tainted as that undisguised feeling of sorrow and hardship is beautifully felt! The world-building in this is spectacular, I swear I felt the air tingle as I was taken on the journey with Willa. The creepy vibes in this are beyond goosebump level and the complex magic system (which I’m not sure I fully understand quite yet) was so unique but draws on traditional concepts, it felt like something out of a timeless Epic Fantasy!
The characters in this really make this story stand out. Willa is headstrong, determined to survive and just trying to make the most of a bad situation. She has been thrust into a power struggle with word and has to learn to fit in. Both Kauis and Sorean are morally grey and willing to kill for their people and I loved every moment with them, though one of them definitely has more of my favour...
What kept this from a full 5 stars is the story progression does not always feel consistent, it started slow, then sped up, then felt a little repetitive then was super fast again. The action was well written but there were only so many near-death experiences or dream walks our girl could go on before I felt like I had seen this done before.
Ultimately this was a beautiful introduction and debut into a world I want to see more of! There was the slowest slow burn with agonising steam. This might not have any spice yet but this is definitely not YA as the darkness and sexual implications do lean more toward NA. The ending is the worst possible type of cliffhanger that will have you yelling at the pages but to get there was an amazing adventure! If you love strong developed characters and adore High Fantasy this book has your name written all over it!
Thank you so much to Callie Dahl for this eARC in exchange for a review! All thoughts and feelings are my own
well this is quite the rollercoaster... mainly I'm just shocked that I wrote a book and it might not be a complete dumpster fire 🔥🤯🤘🏼 can't wait for you all to read it and see who you're rooting for!
This book is so worth every bit of pain. I would do anything for these characters, and give anything to have the second book right fcking now.
Callie did an amazing job keeping you on the edge of your seat and eager for the next bit of information, or witty banter from the MCs. I loved the world building. The magic system was super interesting and I'm obsessed with the pantheon and whole history behind all the kingdoms and people.
I always love multiple POV, and When Kingdoms Fall did not disappoint. I'm not gonna lie there were ones that I liked more than others, but that's really only because I wanted to see what was happening on the enemies to lovers front👀😆
"It had taken everything in him to ignore her for most of the night. He shouldn't have danced with her. He shouldn't have teased and touched her, or attacked the fucking faerie who'd danced with her."
If you like plot driven, enemies to lovers, slow burn fantasy, with gut wrenching twists, lots of tension with spice to come in the next books, and a painful cliffhanger, then When Kingdoms Fall is the book for you.
There is not one single joking bone in my body when I say that this was AMAZING.

when kingdoms fall is the kind of dark fantasy that quietly sinks its teeth into you and refuses to let go. it’s deceptively easy to read, yet layered with intrigue, secrets, and worldbuilding that lingers in your thoughts long after you’ve turned the final page. the story thrives on unexpected twists, constantly pulling the rug out from under the reader just when you think you’ve found solid ground. it feels both intimate and expansive at the same time, balancing sharp emotional beats with a plot that’s always moving forward.
what truly hooked me, though, was the concept. faeries and elves coexisting in the same narrative? a hidden kingdom? a realm abandoned by the gods and left to rot under imbalance? yes, yes, and absolutely yes. the cursed forest and fractured world create a sense of unease that’s deliciously addictive, like the story itself is daring you to keep going. every reveal adds another layer of mystery, and the atmosphere is thick with tension in the best way possible.
that said, the book isn’t without its flaws. the magic system, while intriguing, isn’t always clearly explained, which left me a bit disoriented at times. the timeline of events can also feel slippery, especially earlier on, though it does become easier to follow as the story progresses. i also found myself wishing more characters beyond willa had been given the same level of depth. there were so many fascinating figures introduced, yet most remained just out of reach emotionally, making it harder to fully attach to them.
still, the ending? absolutely unhinged in the best way. it felt less like a conclusion and more like a wickedly teasing prologue for what’s coming next. i genuinely sat there in stunned silence, replaying the final moments in my head and wondering how everything escalated so fast. overall, when kingdoms fall is a gripping, suspenseful read that rewards curiosity and patience. if you love dark fantasy that toys with your expectations and leaves you desperate for the sequel, this one is absolutely worth your time.
pre read ۶ৎ - this is the ultimate cover buy because look how gorgeous, but i can't wait to pick this up next
Rating: 4.5✨ Spice: No spice really, but yes to STEAM.
First, thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity. This review will be voluntary & honest.
So, even with being sick, I could NOT put this book down. Grateful for Kindle dark mode for making it easier to read with my headaches & all. 😭
Anyway, the ending of this book (I would say the last 3-4 chapters) was just one revelation after another, one event after another, & I was left... speechless. And I mean that in the best way possible. At some parts I was like "wait WHAT?" On other parts, I was like "I knew it!" Although I can admit I knew VERY LITTLE lol.
Willa is the type of character that you read about & think, "wow I wanna be her when I grow up." But also, she has been through a LOT & I don't think I would survive all of that. Her stubbornness is one thing I admire the most about her. And you may think "her stubbornness? Why?" Listen, from her stubbornness comes her fierceness & her bravery. Her survival instinct? FUELED by her stubbornness. Also, she is FIERY . Willa has been someone that others tried to tame, those who thought her to be "wild." In the beginning, we see people try to blow out the fire within her time after time. And by the end of the book, we see that fire come to life in a whole new way. The only question is, will that fire be too much to her to bear?
Sorean, I'm not saying I'm playing favorites but he's definitely my favorite. He has this playful & caring side but he's also got the weight of his hidden kingdom on his shoulders as Heir Apparent. Kaius, he's dark & haunted by the past. Blinded by the need for vengeance. I cannot wait to learn more about him. Iara & Harland, love them!
I very much recommend this book. Let's go on this journey & scream together while we wait for book 2.
I would like to start this off by saying this is the worst book hangover I’ve had in a long time. I finished this book and just didn’t know what to do with myself. I write this as I’m slowly trying to piece myself back together. This book had it all! Elves, fae, Gods, Sorcery, blood magic, oh and of course a curse! There was so much to unravel going through this read. The story has a ton of world-building, which happens throughout the whole read. So do not be upset if you’re not understanding something right from the beginning because it will be explained in time. The writing was amazing. I was able to picture scenes perfectly in my head. With all the action, adventure in this book it was definitely nice to be able to do that. Let me tell you, I could picture myself in the Wylan Woods and it was absolutely haunting….and I loved every minute of it! Throughout this story we follow the point of view of 3 different characters. In the beginning, the changes got to be a little confusing for me. I couldn’t quite place the timeline of when things were happening but after the first couple chapters it got easier for me to understand. Each of our main characters are on their own separate journey but of course along the way they become intertwined. I found each of the character’s stories to be compelling in their own unique ways. I found myself wanting to learn more and more. Rooting for them at times, but also berating them for mistakes and choices they made. Even following 3 different characters you could see the development (small or large) from each of them. I cannot wait to see what else is to come for our main characters in the next book. I honestly believe this story has all the things a fantasy lover craves in a story. I do want to clarify that this story is definitely story/plot driven. Not really a romantasy. There is a romance but it is a super super slow burn, with more burning continuing into the next one. With that being said, I still loved it! The action and adventure had me entertained enough that the tiny bits of romance was just a plus added to the mix. Now I will be painfully awaiting the next book in the series to help cure this book hangover I’ll have for months to come. It’s definitely worth it though!
Took a chance on this fantasy debut and I am HOOKED. I enjoyed this one so much!! It was interesting, had a romance set-up that I love and a story line I’m very curious about.
For the romance, I actually love (especially in a series) when there isn’t a rush to adding steam. It’s a very slow burn here, frankly I don’t know quite where it’s going and that’s my favorite part!! I’m getting to know the characters and dynamics and it makes my attachment level deeper. I can’t wait to see where this goes.
The plot kept me engaged and this seems to set-up the series really well. I liked the multiple points of view. I liked the conflicting sides of humans vs. elves vs. fae. The world building was spaced out well and the magic system connects well too. My only little ‘eh’ thing was the first half of the book I thought the chapters felt a little choppy. Each new chapter jumped kind of oddly and it took me a bit to get the groove. I do think this went away in the later half of the book.
I’m excited for book two and think this was a fantastic debut. I hope this review convinces you to take a chance too!
Overall audience notes: - Fantasy - Language: some strong - Romance: two super brief scenes - Violence: high - Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of life, kidnapping, creature attacks, near death experiences, physical and magical altercations
Dnf at 53%. I tried really hard to like this book but by the time I got to this point I still was unsure what was even happening or what the point of the characters was. The world has the chance to be super fun but it took too long to get to a point. Maybe I’ll come back to it later.
An amazing dark high fantasy filled with magic, monsters, mysteries and marvelous characters! This book has everything a fantasy fan could ask for, AND MORE!
The world-building is AMAZING! Fallen and hidden magical kingdoms with different species, each with their own view of history of the world. And that history is so well-developed!!! I can't wait to learn more! There are humans, fae and elves in this book which is so interesting. I don't think I've ever read anything that has both fae and elves. And I love the way that distinction between them was made!
This book is simply a well of plot twists. The author went in a direction I would have NEVER expected, especially not in the first book of the series! This book sets up and explains the world, characters, magic and relationships nicely. It is very obviously the first book of the series, but done perfectly! I really enjoyed the fact that there isn't much romance in this and that it wasn't drawing the attention away from the plot, but there was still amazing development in relationships between characters. THIS is how you write enemies to lovers troupe, and the revenge plot line! I am super excited to see in which direction it will all go, since there is really no way to guess with the way Callie writes, hehe. Oh yeah, and there are gods in this... Most of them have left, but they exist, so they could show up, so there is that...
The writing is amazing. Not simple, but not complicated either. It's easy to read and makes the book one of those you simply can not put down until you finish. And the dialogs between characters were so much fun! I had a tiny bit of pacing problem, but all in all, a very enjoyable read. I will 100% read everything Callie Dahl ever writes!
The magic system is familiar yet very innovative at the same time. I am still a bit confused as to how it all works, and I can't wait for more details in the future books. It is a tool, but also its own character? A very interesting and fun idea.
The characters are amazing, and every single one is morally grey. And who doesn't like a bunch of morally grey characters? Willa is the type of FMC that I really love! Headstrong and sassy, but not stupid. I love the fact that she is not all-powerful, and that, even though she got thrown into the world she knows nothing about, she kept her wits and what makes her, her. I can't wait to see how her character will develop. She has a very big possibility of becoming a new book girlfriend. Sorean started as a character I didn't really care about, and ended as the one I wanted to know about the most! I am very, very, very worried here! I adore Kauis and Greer with my whole heart. I love their connection and their storyline so so so much. However, this POV is what made me not give this book a 5 star rating. It was interesting, and building the suspense, and then nothing. Personally I feel it would have been better to keep his POV a mystery up to book 2 and then reveal what was happening. I did love it! It just took away from the pacing of the book a bit. But I am having very high hopes for them in the future! I see essence as its own character, and I loved every moment of it! I don't know what it is, but I just love it. Honorable mention for Merellian because when he showed up I said he was going to be my new book boyfriend, and well...yeah... Somehow, everyone in this book is a villain, it just depends on from whose side you look. Some more, some less, but everyone is a villain and I AM HERE FOR IT!!!
CONCLUSION
This is a perfect first book in a series, as well as an amazing debut novel (I am sorry, but how is this a debut is still beyond me). The world, the magic, the characters, the plot...everything a (dark) fantasy lover could wish for. Also, Callie does not shy away from shocking plot twists that leave you mind blown (and on a cliffhanger) so read at your own risk. I 100% recommend this book! It is a great read!
Thank you, Callie SOO, much for the ARC of this book, it was truly amazing.
“Men fear monsters. Yet fear made men do monstrous things.”
The emotional rollercoaster of this book had me hyperventilating at one point. Morally gray should be the soundtrack to this book. I was not sure who I loved, hated, and just tolerated at some points in this book! The FMC goes through the ringer, she has so much tossed at her and she continues to keep fighting like a ‘wildfire’. I am sooo EXCITED to see where this story goes in book two. I need to know MORE. More about the magic system, the monsters in the Wylan Woods, what in the world Kauis is up to. MORE. MORE. MORE. After the ending of that book omg I can't even imagine how the next book will go.
“Sometimes scars show power. They can show what you’ve survived and how you now laugh at those who have never had to bear their hardships on their skin like a painting out on display, rather than hidden deep within the soul. Everyone has them. What matters is how you wear them.”
I truly enjoyed this book…like a lot. It was a bit slow at the beginning, but Callie does not take long to get the ball rolling. The FMC is angry, witty, and one strong woman, also just hilarious. I really liked that she was in her mid-twenties! So many adult fantasy books I feel still have the FMC be 19, 20 years old. I cannot wait to see the character growth that Willa will have over the course of this series. Sorean his essence reminds me of Venom from Marvel, literally had me chuckling at some parts. I loved every POV chapter of Sorean, I just loved learning about his character. Now to Kauis…. I am very excited and interested to see where his story arc takes him. I don't want to say anything else cause I don't want to give anything away. But his character still has me thinking about what is going to happen in book two!
I beg your biggest pardon because I am about to go off. I'll try to do this in the most non-spoilery way possible, but love a duck.
Epic, dark fantasy, horror fiction, and I need more of it. I was reluctant to put this one down whenever I had it in my hands. Callie Dahl is a damn force to be to reckoned with, and I am somehow supposed to believe this is a debut novel? There is no way! This is the work of someone who has been plotting, planning, and honing their literary creation for years on end. I am not worthy!
Okay, all hype aside friends, if you love world-building as much as I do, then you'll want to pick this one up asap and get swept away (or carried away by the Wylan monsters).
Callie is a true master at complex world-building woven in parallel to the plot. Each chapter essentially ends in a hook, which compelled me to want to read more if only to figure out what exactly is going on. I say that with much love because I truly enjoy a book that can puzzle me as much as it delights me and Callie delivered.
The lore, magic system, and overarching "religion" within this book are so well developed that it consumed me. I feel like there is not a single thing Callie didn't think of, though I imagine more will come to life in book two.
The horror elements are perfectly fantastical and imaginative, truly engaging me and delivering those devious and tormented dark undertones I desire on every page.
I will say this, dear friends, spice you will not find, but steam? Yes. If you are deterred by complexities and world-building, this is not for you, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to force everyone into reading When Kingdoms Fall anyway.
Callie, you had me hanging on for dear life in the last 60 pages. The plot twists, and not one, but three major cliff hangers? Goodness gracious, I need the next book like my life is depending on it.
Men feared monsters. Yet fear made men do monstrous things.
Thank you so much to Callie for providing me with an eARC!
All thoughts are my own.
Callie deserves the biggest round of applause for the effort and love she put into this novel. You can tell she absolutely adores these characters. It is no easy feat to craft a whole new fantasy world but SHE! DID! THAT!
The story centres around Willa, a fierce and determined girl who lives in the shabby human town, Traifton, isolated from the rest of the world. The rules of Traifton chafe at her but she stays and follows along (as best she can) for the sake of her mother and brother. After all, they are all she really has left after her father was lost to the Wylan Woods, a cursed forest full of monsters and other unknown oddities. But something about the Wylan has always called to Willa…
From here the story is non-stop action, whether that is Willa fighting off a Wylan beast or encountering vengeful Elves. Willa is such a smart-ass character, but you can’t help but find her endearing. I know if I were in her position I would shrivel up, but Willa rises to the occasion and shines.
Sorean! Now this man is a FAE BAE! He is moody and snarky but something about his cruelty is charming. I appreciate Callie not shying away from making her characters morally grey with a dubious moral compass. While sometimes I just wanted to shake Sorean, I also loved following along with his twisted adventure. These fae aren’t just ethereal and graceful, they are cut-throat and vicious and desperate to protect their magically hidden kingdom. But Sorean, just like Willa, isn’t one to fall in line. His essence is fighting to get free, and his mother is keeping secrets. If Sorean picks away he might just learn the truth… but at what cost?
And then KAIUS!!! I admit I wanted more of Kauis. The second he was introduced I thought, “yes. That’s my man right there”. This elf is not one to be trifled with and when he arrives at Traifton with the humans falling at his feet, he knows this is his chance to find the mystical artifact he has been in search of for ages. The elves are barely hanging on and he just might be his people’s last hope. With the help of his trusty bonded gryphon, Greer, Kauis is prepared to stop at nothing to complete his quest. Kauis is as cold as stone but damn, COLOUR ME INTRIGUED! I can’t wait for book two when we get even more of him. And after the cliff-hanger ending… things are about to get REAL!
Callie is a brilliant writer. The dialogue is full of quips and hilarious banter but also plenty of introspective moments where you get a glimpse into each character’s psyche. The action was constantly going, there was hardly a dull moment in this book. Sometimes fight scenes can be hard to follow, but in When Kingdoms Fall, I was feasting on every word. This is the type of book that plays out like a movie in your head and I couldn’t get enough.
Now there wasn’t any spice in this one but my GOD was there tension!!! Just wait until you get to a certain festival scene… When I tell you I was SHAKING! Book 2 better feed me all that delicious tension and more!
I strongly recommend this to all my fae and elf loving baes out there. DO IT!!!
Men feared monsters. Yet fear made men do monstrous things. . We all love a good anti-hero. In a way we get three main anti-heros. Our FMC is a fiery, redhead named Willa. She is sometimes lost, but she works to keep her family safe. One of our MMC, gives off evil Legolas vibes with an amazing balayage named Kauis. He also has a cute companion named Greer. He wants retribution and to save his people from an evil curse. Our other MMC, is a broody, prince who says Mine and Good Girl named Sorean. He’s been trapped in a bubble, and when he finally steps out everything changes. Willa crosses paths with both of our MMCs and both want something from her. However, Willa is keeping secrets. Will she help save their kingdoms or destroy them? . If you love LOTR then you need to check out this book. The elves give off the eternal beauty with a darkness mixed in. I loved it. The details in this book were amazing. It wasn’t too much. Callie gave just enough where you could really feel, imagine, taste, and smell it all around you while you read. You also get multiple POVs in this book and she does an amazing job of intertwining them together throughout the story. This was a healing story. I could feel all the healing each of these characters searched for. It was all different, but each needed something. This book is more on the fantasy side. There is some one horse/one bed trope, some enemies to lovers, and some slow burn. There is a lot of banter and strong willed opinions. I loved the hate emotions brewing between certain characters. THE ENDING. The twist is one you will not see coming. This was a very well done debut novel. You can see all the hard work put into this story. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have received an ARC. Quote time: . But bread made her happy. Pants did not.
He smiled at his old friend. “I’ve never asked, do you fancy the taste of mortal?”
“I’m going to give you a head start, girl. Run as fast as you can and let me enjoy the chase.”
“Just remember, girl. When kingdoms fall, a new dawn rises.
“I believe fear sometimes makes monsters. I brought out both in a man who holds too much power.”
Feral little thing.
“Sometimes scars show power. They can show what you’ve survived and how you now laugh at those who have never had to bear their hardships on their skin like a painting out on display, rather than hidden deep within the soul.
“Where do you think you could go that I would not find you?”
When Kingdoms Fall is a thrilling high fantasy novel that will keep readers on the edge of their seats with its curses, mysteries, and intricate plot twists at every turn.
The novel follows the captivating journeys of three main characters, each with their own POV chapters:
Willa - the human girl branded as wild, finds herself entangled in the dark and enigmatic Wylan Woods.
Kauis - the elf prince who bargains in order to reclaim his race's power.
Sorean - the fae prince trying to discover the answers behind his unruly magic, why the monsters in the Wylan Woods are getting worse, and uncover what his mother, the Queen, has been plotting all this time.
I will admit that this book did start out very slowly. It took me a long while until I was actually invested in these characters (like 50% of the way through). But each of these charaters plots are interwoven and eventually it gripped my attention, and the backstory given to each character is necessary to weave their plotlines together. I just like to have a sense of where things are heading from the get go...
However, this book did do many things very well! The world-building is exceptionally crafted, with a clear and concise narrative that engages the reader's imagination. The author, Callie, is a master at her craft, and her beautiful writing is a testament to her talent. And there is just a multitude of tropes for you to sink your teeth into: enemies to lovers, found family, one bed AND one horse...what more could you want?
The characters were all interesting. Willa is your typical headstrong firey redhead FMC; she forges her own path no matter what. Sorean was a quick favourite with me; I love a fae male and he does not disappoint! He definitely grows as a person over time which I was 100% here for. Kauis and Greer were super sweet I thought, though I wish their storyline had more of a conclusion in this book.
With an array of jaw-dropping plot twists and a shocking cliffhanger, When Kingdoms Fall sets the stage for an exciting sequel that readers won't want to miss. Overall, this is a fantastic book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves epic fantasy and complex characters.
A big thank you to the author for providing an ARC of this book!
First I want to thank the author for the eARC opportunity. With that said, this review is completely voluntary and honest.
Second, I found Callie on Instagram/Bookstagram well before I really became apart of it. I can still remember just seeing a snippet and immediately going to sign up for her newsletter. That had to be like roughly two years ago. So when I FINALLY got a newsletter with an update AND a release date. I IMMEDIATELY ran to sign up to arc read. And of course she didn’t disappoint.
The world within this book is so immersive. The characters feel real and easily relatable. Willa went through some sh*t. She’s broken down multiple times but still manages to be resilient (despite not feeling like it). She’s pretty traumatized from the start but we get some moment of something close to content. I need to know what happens next for her in this next chapter of her story.
Sorean… SOREAN. I love him. That is all.
No but really, poor Sorean pretty much is experiencing a similar trauma as Willa. Seeing their interactions slowly evolve to..not hatred 😅 is such an experience. It’s not rushed and it really natural despite the subtle pushes that are happening. I just have to say *looking at you Callie* ALLLLL better be well for him at the start of book two or riots will ensue 😂😂
And Kaius, listen I actually do really like Kaius, even with his straight up deep dive into a more malicious villain-like role. But like also not. I honestly really just want Kaius and Willa to be besties 😂 he needs that friendship!
Overall I absolutely adore this story and these characters. I loooved this book. I’m DYING for book two. Everyone need to go and run to the store and GET. THIS. BOOK. 🩵🖤
First of all, I would like to thank the author for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book has consumed my life for the past couple of days and rightfully so because it was fricking amazing. Callie Dahl has created a whole new world of magic set to captivate all readers — she has created her own gods, her own magic system and she has put her own little spin on elves and faeries. I couldn’t put this book down.
At first, I was afraid that it would be too confusing because the book is reading in three different POVs — Willa’s, Sorean’s and Kaius’ — but it flowed so beautifully that you didn’t notice and didn’t mind when the POV change happened. I really enjoyed Willa’s fiery attitude and how she always had a comeback ready. Her character development throughout the book was something that happened in a way where the reader didn’t notice it till the character herself did. I really liked Kaius’ chapters as well. He’s a revenge driver elf with a soft spot for his Griffin friend (did Greer steal the show? Absolutely!) but I have to say my favourite character was Sorean. I loved his development the most out of all them and the way he loathed but also loved to tease Willa was so entertaining to read!
All in all, When Kingdoms Fall is a fantastic read for people who love fantasy books filled with power, revenge and betrayals. I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it as much as I did because I haven’t read this type of fantasy books in a while. But this, for me, was absolutely perfect! I can’t recommend it enough!
When I first saw this book I was instantly intrigued by the cover and blurb, but after reading a couple of mixed bookstagram reviews I was a little dubious what it would be like, especially being a debut...well, all I can say is I loved it, and I'll be buying the hardcover for my shelf and to re-read once the next book releases!
I love how I was hooked by the first few sentences, how easy this book was to read (the world-building is woven beautifully throughout), how well-written it was, and how unique the plot was.
Willa was instantly loveable -- I felt so much for her, and was raging at the injustices done to her, but ultimately love how all of that shaped her and what her character was able to do.
The two princes, one elven, one fae, couldn't have been more different! One being bad news, one being so bad he's good. The banter between Willa and the princes was fabulous- I couldn't get enough.
While this is a low spice book (I belive the spice level increases further into the series), there's definately lovely slow burn tension and kissing that will leave you wanting more.

The plot twists were amazing, and I was so engrossed in the book, I didn't see them coming. Especially that ending!! Can I have book 2 now please?
From the very beginning I was hooked- that opening scene left you wanting more and immediately needing to figure out what this world is all about. The magic system is so intriguing- we got plenty of info with room for wonder that I know is leading up for more books. Beautiful descriptions that immerse you completely, curses, hidden kingdoms; you really get it all. Callie, you can see how much time, effort and research you put into creating this world and it truly paid off.
I LOVED having multiple POV’s - humans, elves, Fae; you get it all and I enjoyed each one so much (some more than others but when you read I think you’ll get why 😉) This story gave me a lot of LOTR vibes.
There is definite enemies me lovers energy with some good tension but the romance isn’t ever present and I thoroughly enjoyed that- it gives you a proper and realistic plot for this trope and it was done exceptionally.
The ending?! The way Callie writes you don’t know what could be coming, and that twist was so well done. This truly sets the scene for what’s to come. An absolutely amazing debut that I’m so lucky to have received an ARC for.
𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐈𝐅 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄: ⚔️ Slow burn ⚔️ Enemies to lovers ⚔️ Lots of tension ⚔️ Dark fantasy ⚔️ One bed ⚔️ Found family
Just finished this one and it was such a delight! It absolutely met my craving for a new lush fantasy book and didn’t disappoint. I found the cast of characters to be enticing and entertaining and honestly fell for all of them. I also loved seeing this was a multi POV book cause I wasn’t expecting it. While im sure a solo willa book would have been great, I think having a good mix of 3 POVs really moved the story along at a good pace. I never felt bored or felt like I was moving too slowly.
We get to see this world and learn along with Willa via her mortal eyes as we learn about the magic in this world, the elves vs faes and the devastating veil. But Sorean and Kauis brought fresh perspectives, both being quite different which I really loved. I love our brooding and amazing Fae Prince but also the mysterious and soulful Kaius. Both Princes represent two different factions and two different situations so the parallels but also the differences were great to see.
Knock knock! Who’s there? Your next new adult high fantasy favourite? Hell👏🏻Yes👏🏻
Callie Dahl knocks it out of the park with her debut novel When Kingdoms Fall. We’re talking magic, monsters, mystery, curses, fae, elves, gods and so much more. The world building is done so well and all our characters feel so real and flawed. All three of our main characters are morally grey and I am here for it.
The plot twists in this book had my head spinning. The ending was completely unexpected and heartbreaking! Something almost unheard of for the first book in a series!
This was a compelling enemies to lovers story with a fantastic revenge plot line. Really enjoyed this one and can’t wait for book two! I need a physical copy of this so that I can annotate all the WTF moments🤣👏🏻
Thank you so much to Callie for an eARC of this book! When Kingdoms Fall hits shelves 13 May 2023 but it’s already available for preorder wherever books are sold!
Wow that ending was something else!! I really liked the book. The only thing I wished had been a bit different was the povs. But I thought it was a really enjoyable read. I wish I had had more time to just sit and devour it but oh well.
i liked this! the first 200 pages were painfully dull and i could do without kauis’ POV. I mostly skipped those chapters anyway because i didn’t care and honestly i don’t thing it affected the story. I wish we got more out of this book tbh. The world is so interesting but like nothing really happened until the end. Book 2 is probably going to be a banger.
Also it was so hard to follow what was even happening sometimes because there would be random time jumps between chapters that were never explained. Also random shit would appear and it would be like “oh yeah and also this is a thing sorry forgot to tell you.” I think I have more questions than answers. Also does machiavelli or whatever live inside her head? or is that some other dude like her essence or whatever? Why do none of the other branded people have powers? Queen Morelli or whatever her name is had the dumbest motivation I’ve ever seen. Wouldn’t she want Willa on her side if Willa is literally the only being that can kill elves? It doesn’t make sense for her to literally kill her own son to kill Willa???? Is Enrel a Wylan creature now? I thought only the griffin for turned into one but then he had those green ass demon eyes at the end…. Did Sorean survive? Kinda seems like it!!! Why did Elianna want to awaken Willa’s essence? They’re lowkey enemies. Are we buddy buddy with Ilia and Harlan now? Who tf is the old woman who was like the god of the lake but also teleported and somehow worked at the brothel???? Did Willa destroy Lithelle??? Wasn’t she dead??? How did she come back to life????
And WHY are the elves and faeries even enemies??? Like just because they’re different species???? There’s literally no explanation for that. Nobody told them they had to be enemies like relax. King Amamamar killed the elf guy (allegedly because Queen Morelli told him to but the elves don’t know that) so really they should be pissed at the humans not the faeries.
Idk not a lot made sense but i still enjoyed this because it was a cool world…..
Idk why tho Claire pisses me tf off like why r u so invested in this when you were literally only there for the first chapter, disappeared for the rest of the damn book, then showed up in the epilogue.
Anyway I give this a solid 3.25 stars. I want to know what happens next but it’s nothing to phone home about
