The Genius and the Tramp Fight Fascists in 1930's Hollywood

MIDNIGHT BURNING - September 2025

“Ingeniously pairs real-life friends Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin on a roller coaster ride to save America from a fascist threat within its borders.” – Jacqueline Winspear, author of the Maisie Dobbs series.

Award-winning author Paul Levine weaves historical figures into a gripping, true-to-life plot to overthrow the U.S. government in the sizzling thriller MIDNIGHT BURNING.

It's 1937 and clouds of war gather over Europe, and American fascists march at home. While the FBI chases suspected communists, Nazi agents plot an armed insurrection. When the world’s two most famous men–Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin–uncover the scheme, which includes the assassination of Hollywood’s biggest stars, they fight back with nothing but their ingenuity, raw courage, and the fierce resolve of Georgia Ann Robinson, LAPD’s first Black female officer.

Levine—praised by The New York Times for his “realistic, gritty, and fun” novels—delivers a breathtaking thriller laced with humor and a larger-than-life cast, including Charles Lindbergh, Douglas Fairbanks, William Randolph Hearst, and Joseph Goebbels.

"This could be Levine's masterpiece." - Lee Goldberg, New York Times #1 Bestselling Author

Ridiculous to preposterous story

The story was poorly written, too much backstory and the twists and turns in the story were only possible from a vivid imagination which was developed from reading too many superhero comic books. I would recommend this book to readers of fantasy, not fiction

A Solid Three

For many readers this could be a 4 or even a 5 star read. I liked the plot and the characters. For me it read like a TV show, not bad a solid read, but just not good enough to be great. I was entertained. I didn’t see the plot twist. So both of those elements worked in the story’s favor. The dialogue and the plot developments could be much better. There is room to go deeper in the characters. Much of the dialogue is “Meh”. But if you have a plane ride or down time and want a fun read, here’s one suggestion.

I haven't even finished the book but am so riveted by the characters and the action that I feel compelled to write a review. Paul Levine has created a complex plot that drew me in from the beginning. Without giving too much away, I can say that I found myself holding my breath when Lisa and Sam are in danger. Never have I felt such fear from a fictional character like I feel when I read about Lisa, Max, and Sam's nemisis, Shank. This dude is scary. I recommend this great read to all. Great job, Paul Levine.

Tragedy or murder?

The airline industry is strictly regulated to test all aircraft engines and moving parts regularly. What if a plane crashes and the truth is buried at sea with all passengers and crew, lost. A lawsuit ensues, trying to get to the truth, but is blocked from going to trial for insufficient evidence. The appeal is denied and the case then gets kicked up to the supreme court.

Is it possible to fix the ruling? What is the airline hiding, and why?

Interesting Great Story

“Up there!” Truitt yelled, leading Lisa toward a set of steel stairs that connected to the catwalk. Behind them, the heavy door opened, and Shank burst in. “Freeze!” he yelled. “Keep going,” Truitt told Lisa, who was ahead of him on the stairs. Truitt stopped and turned. Several steps below him, Shank steadied a handgun on the railing, aiming at Truitt’s heart. “Don’t move a muscle, asshole.”

This is the lowest rating that I have ever given this author!

This story was too much ado about "Shank," a typical gangster, who was portrayed pretty accurately as wierd psycho. And, too much written space was taken up with Lisa's "romantic real and imagined episodes," which seemed to relate very little to the main story plot. I found myself just skimming over most of these descriptions, as well as those of the geographical areas, where the aircraft crashed.

Nail biting page turner

When an Atlantica plane crashes in the Everglades and all 288 people on board are killed, the victims families want their day in court claiming negligence on the part of the airline. With falsified records the judges can find no evidence of wrongdoing. One law clerk is determined to get justice at the risk of her life and career.

Another good Levine book

but a little unbelievable. Alert: very graphic violence and sex scenes. They’re not an integral part of the book but they’re there. An interesting look at the workings of the Supreme Court but definitely fictionalized. Levine’s books always keep you reading to find out what happens next but I don’t think it’s one of his best books.

I had hoped for more courtroom emphasiis

Like any good drama the reader feels the fear, the thrill of the find, and the characters. Yet, I am most interested in courtroom emphasis and here it is secondary. While it is nice to advertise other books by the author, this ebook has far far too Mich.

Appropriate title

This book is very entertaining and, while believable, hopefully it is improbable. The characters were interesting and the story was compelling. The book gave insight into the life of a Supreme Court justice and the fight for justice. The book is appropriately titled - Impact! It will have an impact on you!

Interesting story

A good story line from a young girl who had a tough life, becoming a stripper, a mistress, to studying to become a successful lawyer. Getting back with her last lover who was involved in criminal behaviour with the crashing of an airline plane. The story was a bit drag out two but all in all not bad.

Paul Levine at his best

Loved it. Impact moves quickly and balances a meaningful topic (judicial integrity) with edgy characters (Shank), a sexy female attorney, swamp poachers and ..... hard to remember all the fun people in this one. It moves and entertains.

Wow! Talk about a few twists and turns

This is an excellent read with many chances to change your allegiances from one shady character to another. I highly recommend this to anyone that likes to keep going on a book, even if the bedtime alarm has sounded

Plotline good

But personally I continually was offended by the “Jesus Christ” used predominately through out the entire book. It was also was sexually graphic. I will not read any book from this author again.

Paul Levine......one of my favorite authors.....what the hell happened. I hate "pulp" fiction and that is what this is. Hated it. Got to page 150 and couldn't take any more stupid violence, sex, romance, blah, blah, blah!

The story started a little slow for me and I put it down a couple of times. I’m glad I stuck with it. The further I read the better I liked it. By the time I finished It was a real page-turner. I enjoy stories that deal with the law. The character descriptions were vivid and realistic.

Excellent book to read

I absolutely loved all of the characters and the story and mystery were riveting. The romance was nice but could have been more detailed. All in all though I will undoubtedly try to read more books by Paul.

Great book

A very judicial storyline and great characters even if everything can be figured out quite quickly. I think young and old will enjoy this story. Probably will not be so predictable to an unseasoned reader. Keep up the good work.

The story and main plot are both good enough for 4 stars but so many holes and inconsistency in subplots. I’m a straight shooter so talking in circle really annoyed me and man…there’s a lot of that here.

Not good

Way below Levine's talent level. Nothing about the story, except the airline causing the crash, was even slightly plausible. The sex scenes were unnecessarily repulsive. I'm a Lassiter and Soloman and Lord fan, but this one completely missed the mark.

As always Paul Levine brings out another thriller, but this time with a lot of official legal & judicial jargon that swiftly went over my head. The remainder of the story was very intense & thrilling. On the whole a splendid read.

Enjoyed this very much

Periodically wordy but a fabulous read and it’s much like Ben porter in false assurances and threat bias, two excellent stories!
