This was interesting…

This is a classic “girl gets bullied but falls for the popular guy” manga. I’m not usually into that type of trope; however, I found this to be a lighter, pleasant read. Their relationship moves really fast so that kind of threw me off guard but I love how they are both helping each other in unexpected ways. I’m definitely interested in seeing how Mei develops as a character in future volumes. Happy to know that this one is complete.

Called Say I Love You. in English version. Mei has been without friends for ALL 16 years of her life... When she injures a popular boy in school because of a misunderstanding, Yamato takes a liking to her and pursues a friendship with her. In this volume he protects her from a stalker with a kiss!!

This is a fun premise... I can totally see a Japanese girl keeping her distance from everyone because of bullying. Staying quiet and not drawing attention can be a sort of protection in high school. I LOVE the idea that a random interaction with some guy causes opinions to shift about her because she is brought out into the light because of it!

I REALLY loved our two leads... Both Mei and Yamato have a little something different about them... He is a playboy but because he is super kind to everyone. And Mei comes out with some real doozies! I love it! They also both have a slightly unusual look too when drawn... I pretty much NEVER get them confused with other characters or other series. They are your typical teenagers while just being a touch unique! I quite loved that about them both.

I do quite like the other characters, particularly Asamitchi who becomes a girlfriend and even smarmy Nakanishi starts to grown on my by the end. They both have that same slightly different feel to them that the leads have so I can see them all being friends! And it is too cute how Mei orchestrates their change in relationship!!

I'm not sure the execution of the actual plot is very good... a MAJOR problem is the random time jumps with no references as to HOW much time has passed NOR why relationships had changed slightly. I simply can’t tell if it’s been a week or a day... Also the plot is rather contrived what little of it there is... not that is isn't cute, it is CUTE, especially as Mei seems to be at the root of events and is embarrassed by it all!

I do want to read more to see where this series goes... but it isn't raring with tension either. I do like that the "mission" of the relationship is that Mei tell Yamoto she loves him (not something she is NEAR comfortable with doing anytime soon...) even though it is rather ARROGANT of him to want that when you really thing about it.

A little of the allure of shoujo manga is that these are the secret desires of girls and women... NOT that this is how they REALLY want to be treated nor if it is EVEN possible to find a man who WOULD do so without being a smarmy ass. The allure of this particular series is that the characters make you want to root for them! For Mei to find friends and society and for Yamoto to find a girl who is as kind as he is (and makes him work for their relationship!!)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Leads
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Others
⋆ ⋆⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⋆⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⋆ ⋆⭐⭐⭐ Development

BOTTOM LINE: A great start to a fun relationship!!

I know. I really love this volume. It's really good. I can't find faults for this manga. I like Mei, Yamato, Asami and even Nakanishi. Back then, I was insecure of my figure too. I mean, I got this big boobs too. Well, bigger than my peers. I was not really bullied because of it. But since I'm a bit of a tomboy back then, I didn't like having big breasts cause, how can I run and play with friends if my boobs are juggling in front of me? lol. It's annoying to have them that I wished I'm a flat chested girl (but I'm so thankful I'm not though. lol)

Okay, so I also got this one classmate. A guy friend told me that that classmate told him I got big boobs that it's like I'm letting everyone know and that he think it's not normal or whatever. It was my first year at college. I haven't told anyone about that. even my bf, I think. But it really annoyed me. I didn't asked for having this rack. :/ O I totally feel what Asami felt.

Now, my girl friends compliment my figure. lol. I still got bigger breasts than them though. And I just always say it's just fats that happened to go to my boobs. LOL. :P

Anyway, totally looking forward to the next volume. I'll read it again sometime tomorrow. :)

and btw, Thank you Rachel for recommending this to me. I haven't started a new shoujo series yet cause I still got lots of other books to read. :P

description

I think it's partly that I've read too many manga in this theme (the reserved or "weird" class member being "saved" by a romance) and many were better, but also that I did not like the romantic lead popular boy. I'm surprised that the girl is so ready to accept his interest at face value, knowing that he leads on so many girls.

It wasn't terrible and I may read book 2 to see if it grows on me.
If you're into this storyline try Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You, that has more developed characters, stronger conflicts, better art, better everything.

Absolutely delightful light romance manga !

Tachibana Mei is a 16 year old girl who doesn't have any friends and she never had a boyfriend. She doesn't believe in friendship because so called friends always betrayed her and humiliated her.

"Mei: People betray each other all the time. And at school it's just a bunch of idiots who need someone to bully. I don't want to hang out with that kind of people. So I don't have friends.
Yamato: You can't say that everyone is like that.
Mei: Yes, everyone. They call your name when it suits them but when you call them they don't come"

One day at school Mei was being humiliated and harassed by Nakamishi as usual but he crossed the line when he tried to pull her skirt down. She turned and accidentally kicked his best friend, Yamato Kurosawa, instead. Despite being hurt and on the floor, Yamato laughed. He found her - interesting. And that's how it all started. Yamato gave Mei his phone number because he found her interesting and cute. Even though she didn't call him that night, he greeted her the next day. That evening, as Mei was leaving work, she noticed a regular customer at the bakery following her. She got scared and called her mom who didn't answer the phone. The only other number she had was Yamato's. She called him and he came. He helped her out by taking her hand and walking her out of the convenience store while saying that he loved her and then he kissed her. He kissed her for as long as it took the stalker to leave. Only when he saw her blushing did he realized that was her first kiss.

After that episode, Yamato decided that they were friends. Even Asami, Yamato's friend accepted Mei and even gave her a matching strap-on animal for her mobile phone. Asami was similar to Mei in a way that she was also being bullied. While Mei was bullied because she was quiet, weird and gloomy, Asami was bullied because she had big breasts. They called her the melon monster. Mei stepped in and defended Asami on one occasion which got her a big bruise on her face. One time, Nakamishi who bullied Mei and loved Asami tried to defend Asami also but all he did was made it worse by praising her huge breasts. When Mei explained to him what he did and how he should tell Asami his true feelings for her, Nakamishi and Asami got together.

"Nakamishi: When talking to Asamicchi I get filled with a happy feeling. That light feeling she has or that she's kind for example. I feel good when I'm together with her. I want to watch her all the time."

"Nakamishi (to Asami): I like your smiling face and when you're glad about something, your gestures, your voice and such... It makes me feel happy to watch you through the day. I want to be the first one to see all of that."

Yamato liked Mei and it seems that she likes him back, especially so when he noticed her stalking him during the karaoke show. He confronted her and kissed her, repeatedly. After that, Yamato decided that they were dating now. And so they went on their first date which would be nice enough if not for the confrontation between Mei and Yamato's former girl with whom he slept with which she told Mei straight in the face, along with that she isn't good or pretty enough for Yamato. Yamato managed to calm Mei down and he told her about his past. Yamato's influence seems to work wonders on Mei because she said:

"I want to believe in people from now on. Even if it's little by little."

This manga has gone off to a great start. Likeable characters, beautiful art and very well explained background stories of characters. Which are not all shiny and happy. More like they are troubled. Bullying and humiliation, depression, complexes, inability to do what's right and going with the flow because that's easier than really fighting for something you believe in.

Mei is one of my favorite manga/anime characters so far. Just when you think you got her figured out, she does something unpredictable (note: PUSH). Just as I thought that Yamato was your typical unemotional playboy, he reveals his true feelings and his kindness for everyone.

The difference between anime and manga is slight, nothing major so far. One thing that really stands out is Nakanishi and his bullying of Mei which does not appear in anime as such. Here he is displayed like a boy I could never like. He humiliated others and does pranks that hurt others. In anime he is more of a nice guy who is always in Yamato's shadow. Also, in anime Asami doesn't slap Nakanishi for his wrongful behavior.

I'm not sure what to make of this manga.

On one hand, I really like the characters. I have no trouble relating to Tachibana, a girl who was a target of bullying when she was a kid and thus avoided making any friends. She doesn't come across as pathetic like many friendless shoujo heroines, however. She's just become someone who really doesn't care what other people think.

On the other hand, I'm not so sure about the main relationship itself. Early on, it feels like Yamato's forcing himself on Tachibana a bit. There's a bit of stalking on Tachibana's part, too. They get better as the volume goes on, but...

There's also the art, which I'm not so sure about. So long as characters are clothed, you don't notice anything wrong, but at one point, Tachibana is in her room thinking while in just her bra that just doesn't look quite right (not sure if it's because her body's too long or too skinny or what, but something was off anatomy-wise.). This might just be me being picky about nothing in particular.

So in the end, I've got mixed feelings. The manga is honest and open, and I like that. There are just some things that bother me.

I'll give it the next volume before I decide for sure.

Pure wish fulfillment, but not bad, even so. Yes, it belongs to that incredibly well-populated genre where an awkward girl (Mei) manages to effortlessly land the cutest, nicest, most popular boy in school (Yamato). A little cliche. But there are a few elements that make it stand out, even so. The awkward girl has not magically become less awkward. The cute boy hasn't entirely drawn her out of her shell, yet. It's definitely going to be a process. And it's the boy who's more invested in the relationship, instead of the girl. I do like that he most definitely cares about her exactly the way she is, and he isn't demanding that she change to suit him. She will, I'm sure, but character growth is different from being forced to change your personality. Also, about half the book is about her friend, and her entirely different insecurities. It looks like Mei won't spend most of the series entirely in her own head, which could get very boring very quickly. Cliche situation and too-good-to-be-true boy aside, the writing is pretty good. Most of the characters act and talk in a relatively realistic way. There are way worse "geek girl makes good" stories.

Wow this was a huge disappointment. I was expecting a great tale of a girl being bullied and how she over comes and grows stronger even the bullies to get redeemed. But nope.

I swear everyone in this book is bullied. Even the bullies get bullied by other bullies who in turn get bullied. Its this never ending cycle. What the fuck is up with school is it located in purgatory? And the teachers do nothing. There lack of involvement is horrendous, wouldn't you notice that everyone in your class is miserable and antagonistic towards each other except for the hot popular guy who the girl falls for after kicking him in the face. I mean she ends up falling in love with him in like two chapters and even stalks him to a restaurant. NOOO not okay.

This could have been a great story of courage, over coming social obstacles and gaining friendships but ends up being about this insipid girl who falls for the schools popular hot kid who is perfect in everyone's eyes. Barf.

What's even more astonishing is I read this all the way to volume 10.

Such nostalgia!

Say I Love You probably had the worst hairstyles among all shoujo manga that I could recall right now, but the breathtaking eyes made up for it. Honestly, I didn't like the art style that much, even then, but the story kept me going. It was that hooking... until it wasn't.

I was actually a big fan of this series way back in my teens and I adored the anime as well. It was just that the premise was so new to me. It felt too adult-y and it didn't have the usual flowers and bunnies kind of manga that makes us smile as if there's a hanger in our mouth. Instead, it was full of insecurities and self-doubts that shined a new light on my poor heart. It was just too raw and emotional.

Getting to read it the second time though, I just remembered why I decided to drop it back then: Yamato is a friggin push-over and keeps on over-stepping bounds that he completely irritated the living shit out of me. I mean, this book already had over-flowing girl issues and insecurities (and overcoming them), and his attitude isn't helping in lightening the mood! At all! So, mostly, it was Yamato who pissed the remaining soul within me... augh, and the devil's bride, Megumi. Omigosh. (This is actually a part of the later volumes)

Yea, if I need to protect my mental health, I should probably stop here at volume 1 while they're still together (no modeling, no Megumi) and there's not many issues but Kurosawa's forceful kisses. I don't have the guts to continue and suffer.

By the way, 3.5 out of 5. I really liked Tachibana Mei's character.

Shōjo mangas are predictable and have lots of facepalm moments, but they can still make you laugh, which is why I love reading them.

Say "I love you" is very cute. I was excited to read this because I love the cover. It's very pretty! I also like Mei's personality, eventhough I don't like the way she thinks sometimes. But that's shōjo, we have to deal with it.

And by the way, can we for once have a shy boy and a popular girl? Can we?! Am I asking for too much? Come on! ... Just once, please!... No?! Ok!

This is one of the most realistic mangas I've read that deals with a teenagers real problems nowadays--sexual activity, being fat, not getting enough attention, and insecurities.

*There's actually no sexual activity in the actual manga, but it's included in their conversations.

Feels like a real slice-of-life story. The girl isn't cuddly, but you can relate to why she is the way she is. The guy is nice, but not squeaky-clean. These characters feel real, they have what they show on the surface, but they also have depth in the past they hide.

I finished this in about half an hour *eye twitch*

Mei and Yamato's relationship = Life goals..

THIS WAS SO CUUUUUTE!

It's been such a long time since I've read such a cute manga! I love that Yamato slowly brings out Mei from her little gloomy shell. I love that the both of them are open and honest to each other. I love that Mei warms up to him gradually even with (completely unnecessary) outside intervention.

It's like, 11:15 pm over here right now, and I'm really sleepy, but who needs sleep when I have the next volume handy, right?

Well written but I didn’t love the art and even for all the good it did, the male lead’s boundary issues are boundary issues (at least he gets called out for it). Conversely, it was also nice to read a shojo that didn’t take twelve volumes to move the needle on the storyline either.

Overall I’ll probably read this through eventually, but no rush. Some of the fourth wall breaking was good stuff.

I really enjoyed this manga. I can totally relate to the main character Mei.

This manga deals with a lot of issues teens and even adults deal with in real life. Bullying, slut shaming, and body issues. I can't wait to see what happens in volume 2.
