Older widow Delia Barnes is sporting a black eye when she greets fellow authors before an erotic romance convention, which she explains away by joking “I didn’t say ‘Yes Master’ quick enough.” Sitting at the bar, burned-out ad executive and former Dom Kurt Reinhardt overhears the remark—and interrupts to suggest maybe she needs “a new Master”.
Urged by her friends to accept the younger man’s invitation to learn some D/s basics—hey, an author needs to do her research, right?—Delia joins him to get first-hand experience at being submissive, starting with removing her panties in a corner booth. Later, she learns more than she bargained for when she spends a weekend at Kurt’s home…with his eager business partner added to the mix.
But an innocent misstep brings Delia’s world crashing down around her. Can she trust Kurt with her heart…and her life?
Reader Delia gets some up-close-and-personal training during a delectable m/f/m ménage.
I write erotic romance because I firmly believe that life doesn't stop at the bedroom door. I had a deeply romantic relationship with my husband of 22 years, and I want to celebrate his memory in my writing. After he died, it took me a long time to come out of my grief, but parts of him -- his honor, courage, optimism, tenacity, and lust for life -- live on in all my heroes. They’re all alpha men, as well.
And I write erotic romance because I feel you're never too old to give or receive love. Many of my stories have older heroines who dazzle younger men, and I wouldn't mind being such a heroine in real life. But that's another story...
I'm a member of Romance Writers of America, Liberty States Fiction Writers, and EPIC - the Electronic Publishing Industry Coalition. I’ve written for Ellora’s Cave since signing my first contract in 2004. I love gardening, and grow peonies (my friend calls them the “floozies” of the flower world), dahlias and other showy flowers. I play the piano occasionally, listen to classical music almost all the time, and sometimes dance to music only I can hear. And I read, read, read. I hope you do, too.
I am so excited to be reviewing “What She Needs”. Author Cris Anson has done a wonderful job with this story. It packs a powerful punch. The sex scenes are sizzling hot, and offer a variety of BDSM, Ménage, and tender lovin’ scenes. The main characters are brilliant and the chemistry between Delia and Kurt sizzles from the beginning. The storyline is well written and I couldn’t put it down.
BDSM, Ménage, and Cougar type stories are a favorite of mine, and this story did not disappoint. I look forward to reading more titles from Cris Anson, and hope you’ll give this book a try.
“What She Needs” deserves a heat rating of 4 and 5+ Tea Cups. If you love erotic romance, this book is for you.
Move over Demi Moore! There is a new Head Cougar-in-Charge!!! And her name is Delia Barnes! I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Delia Barnes is a take-charge, confident, woman in her late forties who fires, hires, and supervises employees under her, so she would not make the perfect BDSM slave…or so she thinks! I love how the author believably has Delia succumb to Kurt’s “Master” role while at the same time never diminishing her power as a woman. This can sometimes be hard to pull off because in the Master/slave relationship, there can only be one master and the slave has to be subservient (or so I’ve heard, ahem). With Delia’s strong personality, this could have been difficult to portray, but it was done beautifully!
The characters were strong and had depth. Even though Kurt was the Master in the relationship, he did have some baggage that came back to bite him in the most intriguing way (I won’t spoil it!!). And as a widower, Delia was an intriguing mix of modern “Hear me roar” woman, yet traditional in that, sexually, she had only ever been with her deceased husband. This drew the reader in as she explored her sexuality with Kurt and had me cheering for her with a resounding “You go, girl!!!” I also liked that Delia and Kurt’s age difference was made a factor in the story, but not a major factor. I mean, because seriously, if she looks good and he looks good, who cares? As the reader I felt drawn into the story as if I was there because of the excellent descriptions of surroundings and atmosphere, and this was done without being too wordy. And the sex scenes? HOT!!! I think my eyebrows were singed from the flames leaping off the pages during the ménage a trois scenes…
My only gripe with What She Needs is the cover. The cover may lead the reader to believe that Delia is older than she is in the story. The woman on the cover has gray hair and looks a great deal older than her lover, and this may turn some readers off…I don’t know about anybody else but I don’t relish the idea of somebody making hot, monkey love to my grandma..y’know?
If you are looking for a hot, romantic and well written book to read, pick up What She Needs by Chris Anson. You will not be disappointed!
In it Ms. Anson guides you through the world of BDSM from a newbie’s point of view. Even though the chemistry between Delia and Kurt is sizzling, he as an experienced Dom doesn’t just rush into a scene with Delia even despite her willingness to do just that.
My heart caught in my throat several times as I watched their relationship grow from a casual meeting at a bar to Kurt’s home and a hotter than hell menage and finally into a relationship that most would envy. Not to say that Kurt is perfect, just like Delia he has ghosts of his own to banish. So be warned reader there are moments of tear jerking but I assure you that it is more than worth the read to see if Delia and Kurt end up together.
Ridiculous conflict separated the couple. Lots of explicit BDSM sex which was ok, but not special enough to make the story worthwhile.
STORY BRIEF: Delia is 49, a widow, and recently wrote an erotic romance book. She is attending a romance writers convention. Kurt is 35. He is staying at the same hotel for a business meeting. When Kurt hears Delia laughing with her friends in the bar, he is intrigued. No other woman has excited him this way since his wife died a few years ago. He introduces himself and seductively invites her to join him for a drink. She has an approach avoidance thing going on with him – no sex yet. After the convention, he calls her every night, and they have phone sex. He invites her to his home for the weekend. She goes. She tells herself this would be good research for her erotic sex writing. He’s a Dom and she wants to learn more about it.
REVIEWER’S OPINION: This reads like a lot of erotic short stories. The purpose is BDSM sex. Here they include self-pleasuring, bondage, spanking, flogging, rear door activity, and ménage (two men one woman). The sex was ok I suppose. The story was formulaic which I’m willing to accept. It was ok, but my major problem was the conflict that separated the couple. It was one of the worst I’ve ever read. She was doing something normal, squirting starter fluid on charcoal to start the grill. This reminded him of how his wife died. He rushed to her and said he had to punish her and forced her up a ladder onto a building ledge alone. He knew she had a childhood fear of heights. This current punishment traumatized her so much that her fingernails were bleeding from her attempts to hang on. After some time, he rescues her. I’m sorry. I just couldn’t get over this. I can accept mediocre and formulaic stories as a background for erotic sex, but not this. I don’t know what this was.

Man, I'm really not enjoying this book at all. I'm on the second last chapter and I don't like this Dom. I don't see the "experience" that he supposedly has. He seems to lose control too much and some of the things he says and does would make me want to laugh. I'm so finding if difficult to take him seriously. I also don't feel like a Dom should just surprise his new and inexperienced sub with another man in the mouth while she's blindfolded, especially since this was her first scene. The trust had not yet been built. I like a Dom who would walk his sub through what he's doing.
Anyways I'm bored and am struggling with the desire to want to finish this book.
Finally finished the book. I had to force myself to do so. The situation at the end seemed far fetched and ridiculous to me and it just irritated me even more. Didn't enjoy this one at all. Sorry.
The cover is completely off putting. I'm glad that the male lead hated what she said about her "Master" because I wanted to slap her too. I did not like this book. Things that normally turn me on in erotica turned me off here. 1. Her being so easy 2. Multiple sex partners 3. BDSM relationship
