Ferdinand von Schirach (born 1964 in Munich) is a German lawyer and writer. He published his first short stories at the age of forty-five. Shortly thereafter he became one of Germany's most successful authors. His books, which have been translated into more than 35 languages, have sold millions of copies worldwide and have made him an internationally celebrated star of German literature.

A collection of fifteen short stories by a Berlin criminal defense lawyer who sees the bizarre, the unusual, the hopeless and the hapless of modern society. The stories are set in Berlin, translated from the German, but the stories could be anywhere in the modern urban world.



In one story a woman kills her husband who has been so abusive that the charges are dismissed. A man solicits other men to have sex with his wife in hotel rooms and suddenly he turns on one and kills him. A young couple with children jointly kill themselves when new developments in DNA testing reveal they had killed an old man for his money years earlier.

Not all the stories are so clear cut. Just like in real life there are nuances to all of them. And not all are stories of criminal trials. A young man is dead at a boys’ school – did he hang himself or was it a bullying game? Two adult women come forward to exonerate a man they had falsely accused of attacking them years earlier. A couple of the stories are spy stories.

These are good and original stories; quite readable and fascinating. They make you wonder how modern society, German or otherwise, got so screwed up.

Die Theaterstücke von Schirach haben mir besser gefallen. Als Jurastudentin hab ich „leider“ nicht viel neues aus dem Buch mitgenommen und habe auch schon wesentlich spannendere und verrücktere Fälle gelesen.

Mein erstes Buch von Ferdinand von Schirach. 15 nüchtern und sachlich beschriebene Fälle, bei denen die Schuldfrage am Ende für mich nicht immer ganz eindeutig war. Einige Geschichten werden mir noch länger im Kopf bleiben...so unmenschlich und unvorstellbar kamen sie mir vor...

Ich werde definitiv noch weitere Bücher des Autors lesen, seine Art zu Erzählen ist wirklich sehr interessant.

Aquí hay que hablar de dos cosas importantes, lo que se cuenta y la forma en que se cuenta.

Lo que se cuenta, varios casos que el autor como abogado ha tenido a lo largo de su vida, casos duros por su esencia, hay de todo, asesinatos, violaciones, suicidios, robos, entre lo que se cuenta de cada caso que son duros, crudos, fuertes y desgraciadamente reales, lo curioso de cada caso es la resolución judicial en cada uno y en ocasiones la justicia tan solo es divina, llámenle karma o como quieran.

Es imposible no ver entre todas estas historias, que existe una valoración sobre la condición humana, no pude evitar preguntarme ¿Qué los hace hacer todo esto?, von Schirach ha logrado poner en cada caso a una persona, un ser humano con una vida normal, trabajos normales, personas con vidas normales, pero que en todos casos terminan cometiendo delitos, lo hay de todo tipo, jóvenes, viejos, amas de casa, adolescentes, hombres y mujeres felizmente casados, en fin, la cosa es que independientemente de la historia de vida, logra asombrosamente poner a un ser humano ahí, una persona que podría tener una vida, un amor, un hijo, una familia o sueños.

Normalmente cuando hablamos de delitos, se ve a la víctima nunca al victimario y creo que eso es lo que hace diferente a von Schirach, al ser abogado defensor, por supuesto que le ha tocado defender culpables y ¿qué hace un abogado defensor al saber a su cliente culpable? Pues supongo que lo que hace este hombre, ponerle vida, conocer lo que hay detrás de él, no por ello los justifica, no es así, no lo hace, pero logra humanizarlos y creo que en este sentido entiendo algunos comentarios cuando lo comparan con Capote.

Es fácil comprender la razón por la cual el libro se tituló “Culpa”, una cosa es el crimen, la culpa, y el culpable, y otra muy diferente es lo que sucede en el juzgado, no siempre se encarcela a los culpables y no siempre los culpables son encarcelados.

La forma en que Ferdinand von Schirach cuenta cada caso resulta en algo sencillo, pero con una precisión tal que es imposible negar la enorme capacidad de escritura que tiene este hombre, más allá, mucho más allá de lo que cuenta, está la forma en que lo hace, te abduce, te envuelve y cuando leo cosas así es cuando veo el enorme talento que tienen algunos para escribir, para contar sus historias no importa de qué tipo sean, sencillo, fácil, pero al mismo tiempo se nota la enorme capacidad de transmitir, tiene una narrativa fluida, es realmente una delicia leerlo, contradictorio considerando lo que cuenta.

Un libro corto, pero que vale cada palabra y cada página que contiene, muy recomendable, tanto como el primer libro que le leí, no se ha quedado, con este libro ha logrado consolidarse. Tal como en el primero al final se nos entrega una entrevista al autor y él resulta tan interesante como sus casos y sus historias

ความผิดเป็น 1 ใน 3 เล่มของชุดรวมเรื่องสั้นที่ได้ออกมาก่อนหน้านี้ อย่าง อาชญกรรม และ โทษ ที่เล่าถึงเรื่องราวเบื้องหลังของจำเลย ว่าก่อนที่จะมาถึงจุดนี้มันเกิดอะไรขึ้นบ้าง

จุดเด่นที่สุดในงานของชีรัค คือ การเล่นกับการไต่เส้นระหว่างความถูกต้องและการลงโทษ เรื่องราวในเรื่องสั้นแต่ละเรื่องนั้นไม่เคยปกปิดหรือเล่นแง่ว่าพวกเขาทำผิดจริงหรือไม่ (หรือไม่ได้ทำผิดจริงๆ) เเต่มันเล่นกับต่อมศีลธรรมของคนอ่านที่จะเข้าเล่นงานพร้อมสร้างคำถามขึ้นมาในหัวของนักอ่านว่า หากคุณเป็นผู้พิพากษาคุณจะตัดสินคดีนี้ยังไง

ถึงดม้ว่าทุกเรื่องอาจจะไม่ใช่เรื่องราวแบบนั้น (เพราะมีเรื่องเหมือนหนังเเอคชั่นวายป่วงสไตล์กายริชชี่อยู่เหมือนกัน) แต่โดยเเก่นเเท้แล้วไม่ได้หนีออกไปจากขัดแย้งนี้เท่าไหร่นัก

นอกจากความขัดแย้งเเล้ว ชีรัคยังนำเสนอถึงบาดแผลและความไม่สมบูรณ์ของระบบกฎหมายอีกด้วย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นวิธีพิจารณาที่ดูเหมือนจะมีพลังอำนาจมากกว่ากฎหมายสารบัญญัติ หรือข้อบกพร่องด้านหาหาหลักฐาน จนไปถึงสิ่งที่ดูจะชัดเจนที่สุดอีกอย่างหนึ่งในงานของชีรัค อย่างการเผยให้เห็นความบกพร่องและสันดานดิบของมนุษย์

ตอนที่อ่านไปทำให้ผมนึกถึงมังงะเรื่องหนึ่งที่พึ่งออกมา อย่างคุโจ ยอดทนายบาป ของ สนพ ฟีนิกซ์ ที่ให้กลิ่นอายเหมือนงานของชีรัคมากทีเดียว

มีเรื่องหนึ่งในนั้นที่ผมจำได้แม่นมาก คือ คดีที่ หนุ่มพัฒนาการช้าคนหนึ่ง โดนยัดข้อหาทำร้ายร่างกาย หนุ่มคนนี้โดยเเล้งมาตลอดชีวิต มีเพียงคนเดียวที่มอบคุณค่าให้เขาคือ เพื่อนที่เป็นนักเลง ซึ่งจริงๆเเล้วเข้ามาหาเขาเพื่อหาผลประโยชน์โดยการให้เขาช่วยเป็นแพะในหลายคดี หนุ่มคนนี้เข้าใจว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้น เเล้วก็รู้ด้วยว่าเพื่อนนักเลงหลอกใช้เขา เเต่เขาไม่อยากหักหลังเพื่อน เพราะเป็นคนเดียวจริงๆที่ยังเห็นค่าเขา คุโจทนายสายมืดเข้ามาในเวลานี้ ผมรวบรัดเลยว่า คุโจบอกกับทีมทนายของเขาว่า ต้องให้หนุ่นี้ติดคุกไปแม้จะรู้ว่าเป็นแพะ เพราะถ้าไม่ติด แม้รอดคุกมา หนุ่มนี่โดนเก็บแน่นอน ความยุติธรรมเกิดขึ้นจริงตามกฎหมาย เเต่ตอนจบคือความตาย คุโจเลยถามว่า เมื่อเป็นแบบนี้ยังอยากให้หนุ่มคนนี้ไปบอกตำรวจว่าตนเองเป็นแพะมั้ย หรือให้รับสารภาพไป .... ใครอยากรู้ตอนจบไปหามังงะอ่านเอานะครับ บอกเลยว่าเเซ่บสุด

ตัวอย่างที่ผมเล่ามานี่แหละถึงเสน่ห์ในงานของชีรัค การทำให้เห็นว่าความยุติธรรมมันมีมิติที่แตกต่างออกไป การเล่าเรื่องราวของคน ของโจทก์ จำเลย เป็นิส่งที่บางทีนักกฎหมายก็ลืมเลือนไปเเล้วว่าคนที่อยู่ตรงหน้ามีชีวิต ไม่ใช่เป็นเพียงตัวอักษรบอกเล่ารายละเอียดในคำฟ้องคำให้การ ถึงเเม้จริงๆยังมีรายละเอียดอีกมากให้ถกเถียง เพราะหากมองเเต่มุมมองด้านมนุษย์ของโจทก์จำเลย ก็อาจทำให้เกิดความบิดเบี้ยวของความยุติธรรมในอีกเฉดหนึ่งได้เหมือนกัน ซึ่งงานของชีรัคก็ให้แสงอ่อนๆของมุมมองนี้อยู่เหมือนกัน

จึงเป็นรวมเรื่องสั้นอีกเรื่องที่นักกฎหมายควรอ่าน เพื่อทำให้ตนเองไม่ใช่นักกฎหมายแห้งเหือดที่ไม่เคยมองอะไรยอกไปจากคำพิพากษาฎีกา และ สำหรับคนทั่วไปการอ่านงานของชีรัคทำให้เห็นว่ากฎหมายนั้นซับซ้อนและเกี่ยวข้องกับเงื่อนไขหลายประการ ที่ไม่ใช่เเค่เปิดตัวบทว่าเขียนว่าอะไรเเล้วลงโทษไปได้ตามนั้น ยังมีอะไรอีกมากมายที่ส่งผลถึงความยุติธรรม ซึ่งปรากฎตัวในงานของชีรัคเล่มนี้ครับ

I went into this with pretty low expectations because I had read one book of the author and wasn‘t a fan and I don‘t often read (or like) short story collections.

Trigger warnings: rape, bullying, domestic abuse, drug abuse

„Guilt“ is a short story collection featuring 15 short stories, some as short as two pages, some as long as about thirty pages. It‘s the sequel to „Crime“ another short story collection, which I‘m planning to read soon.

As the name gives away the stories revolve around the topic of guilt. Schirach describes different events with his cold, dinstanced and dry writing style, never spoon-feeds the answers or opinions to you. Most of the stories describe a crime and the resulting trial/sentence or another consequence of the actions committed.

The author is a defense lawyer himself and many of the stories are from a defense lawyer‘s point of view. I won‘t say more about the content because I think these are stories you should expierience without knowing too much in advance.
I think at least some of the stories are based on real cases, but I could be wrong.

Reading this book raised many questions in my head that I will ask myself often. Even without many words most of the stories got me thinking.
Please be aware that this book contains disturbing content, sometimes made me very uncomfortable and that you should only read it if you‘re in a good and stable state of mind.

Spannende und überraschende Geschichten, die das Leben eines Strafverteidigers so schreibt, in einer sehr kanppen, prägnanten fast journalistischen Sprache, aber nicht aus der Sicht eines Beobachters, sondern sehr einfühlsam aus Betroffenensicht bzw. Tätersicht präsentiert.

Das Hauptthema von Schuld, sind vor allem ungesühnte und -bestrafte Verbrechen. Manche Stories machen wütend, bei manchen hat man Mitleid mit den Tätern und freut sich, dass sie davongekommen sind.

Ein sehr gutes Werk, keine grosse Literatur aber spannend, wahrhaftig und in einem Rutsch sehr schnell zu lesen.

Die Erzählungen, die der Autor hier vorlegt, haben mich zum Teil sehr stark mitgenommen. Es geht um diverse Delikte, darunter auch Vergewaltigung, Missbrauch, Folter und extreme häusliche Gewalt. Nichts für schwache Nerven. Die Geschichten lassen den Leser dann auch nachdenklich zurück. In irgendeiner Form sind die Delikte der Justiz vorgelegt worden, der Ausgang wird beschrieben und sicherlich nicht immer so, wie man es vielleicht gerne hätte. Man erkennt, dass eben nicht alles schwarz und weiß ist, dass Schuld nicht immer leicht zu definieren ist und das in unserem Justizsystem manchmal die individuelle Gerechtigkeit und vielleicht auch die Menschlichkeit auf der Strecke bleibt. Diskussionswürdige und nachhallende Erzählungen, empfehlenswert .

อ่านงานชีรัคมาสามเรื่องแล้วก็ยังรู้สึกว่าเขาเป็นคนเขียนเรื่องสั้นได้หมดจดจริงๆ บางเรื่องสั้นมากแต่อิมแพกต์จัดๆ ประเด็นของชีรัคไม่มีอะไรมาก เหมือนเดิมทุกเล่ม กฎหมาย ศีลธรรม ความยุติธรรม เส้นแบ่งคือตรงไหน และไม่มีคำตอบใดๆ ให้ เป็นเรื่องที่คนอ่านต้องทบทวนในใจว่าเส้นแบ่งของเราอยู่ที่ไหน ในเล่มความผิดนี้มีเรื่องที่ชอบหลายเรื่อง เรื่องแรกสุด เรื่องครอบครัวท้ายเล่มที่พี่ชายตามหาน้องชายคนละแม่ เรื่องหมากินกุญแจ (เรื่องนี้ค่อนข้างแปลกสำหรับชีรัคในความเห็นเรา เนื่องจากยาวกว่าชาวบ้านชาวช่อง) และมีสองสามเรื่องที่อ่านไม่ค่อยเข้าใจ แต่ไม่ได้ใส่ใจ 5555

งานของชีรัคมีวิธีการเล่าที่ค่อนข้างเย็นชา ห่างเหิน แต่ทุกล้วนเป็นเรื่องของหัวใจ และมีความเป็นมนุษย์สูงมากๆ

Kitabı bir oturuşta okudum. Law and Order dizisinden bir sürü bölümü peş peşe izlemiş gibiyim şu anda. Oldukça akıcı bir dille yazılmış. Bazı hikayeler fazlasıyla rahatsız edici. Adalet, suçluluk ve ceza kavramlarını sorgulayan güzel hikayeler de var arada.

Ich hoffe der Ferdinand hat einen wirklich wirklich guten Therapeuten..ich glaube ich brauche jetzt einen. Gut gewählter Titel und easy geschrieben und alles, ich find auch cool wie deutlich wird was er mit den Geschichten meint ohne, dass er es aufschreiben muss, aber das alles ist trotzdem irgendwie einfach nur ein bisschen krank oder?

Nicht sein bestes Buch. Wie bei Geschichtensammlungen üblich, gefiel mir manches mehr, manches weniger. Einige Erzählungen waren mir zu kurz, bei anderen habe ich mich gefragt, was er mir damit überhaupt sagen will. Fazit: Kann man machen, muss man nicht.

Nunca vos acontece ver um filme ou ler um livro e torcer para que o criminoso se safe?
Nestes contos aconteceu-me isso várias vezes. Outras houve em que pela natureza do crime, a frieza e crueldade com que foi cometido me revoltou as entranhas. Nenhum me deixou indiferente. Terminou com chave de ouro e uma última frase que me arrancou uma gargalhada. Genial.
Acabei o livro sem ter a certeza absoluta se estive a ler relatos de casos verídicos, ou contos baseados em situações semelhantes...mas isso nem interessa nada porque estão escritos de forma brilhante.

Oh Gott, fiel mir das Buch anfangs schwer. Vor allem die ersten Kapitel sind brutal und menschlich abstoßend. Mit der Zeit habe ich mich an Schirachs Schreibstil gewöhnt und versucht, mich von den Geschichten etwas zu distanzieren. Sonst kommt man im Buch nicht weit, ohne an der Menschheit zu verzweifeln. Dennoch sehr lesenswert.

Man entwickelt durch das Buch enormen Respekt für Anwälte.

Neste seu segundo livro de contos, numa escrita concisa, conta-nos quinze histórias de crimes e as motivações que levam os seus autores a cometê-los.
De uma forma minimalista, com frases curtas, mas intensas e perturbadoras, o autor "captura-nos" logo nas primeiras linhas e leva-nos a conhecer casos - que se não são verídicos, poderiam ser - de crimes hediondos que nos chocam, mas que, ao vislumbrarmos a alma de quem os comete, nos sentimos tentados a compreender e desculpar. Eu senti. Em quase todos.

Recomendo este livro a quem gosta de ler, não apenas "literatura criminal", mas também sobre almas em conflito...

Diese Kurzgeschichtensammlung war auf jeden Fall in der Intention weniger klar als der Vorgänger Verbrechen, aber der reduzierte Stil, dessen sich von Schirach bedient, zieht mich immer wieder in seinen Bann. Die einzelnen Geschichten waren eher kurze Momentaufnahmen als wirklich in sich geschlossene Einheiten, für mich ging das Konzept aber trotzdem auf.

meh. it was okay. some of the stories were great and showed how „schuld“ is a difficult topic - who is actually schuldig and who isn‘t? who takes the blame; is it the one who‘s guilty or someone else or nobody? the last story was great, haunting and impactful.

but some stories were bad, uninteresting. the illuminati story for example. i also expected so much more and don‘t really know what the point of this book is. also; are those all his own cases or are they fictional?

i‘m excited to read terror from him, i heard that‘s supposed to be good. i like reading him, his writing style is very clear and simple. but none of his books were impactful so far.

If Columbo had been a severe German criminal defense lawyer, he might have written a book like this. Guilt is the successor to Ferdinand von Schirach's brilliant Crime . Each book contains a collection of true crime (or "true defense") stories.His stories are about his clients, although how much is fiction and how much is fact is hard to tell. Guilt isn't as extraordinary as Crime, but it's still a compelling read. Both books circle around the ambiguous notion of guilt. Some of his characters are caught in terrible circumstances and commit appalling crimes – and yet may not be guilty. At their best, these tales are bleak, sometimes horrifying, with the dignity of a Greek tragedy. Or a great TV show.

Mein erster Schirach und es wird definitiv nicht mein letztes Buch von ihm gewesen sein! Sachlich, nüchtern und auf den Punkt gebracht erzählt der Strafverteidiger in 15 Kurzgeschichten aus seiner Praxis. Ob die Fälle nun genau so passiert sind ist meiner Meinung nach zweitrangig, da die Geschichten sehr authentisch sind und dem Leser wirklich unter die Haut gehen. Die Geschichten sind zwar sehr kurz, aber gerade das Ungeschriebene regt den Leser zum Nachdenken an. Es wird deutlich, dass die Frage nach der Schuld oftmals doch nicht einfach nur schwarz und weiß ist. Die ein oder andere Kurzgeschichte hat mir nicht ganz so gut gefallen, dafür gab es aber wiederum andere, die mir wirklich nahe gegangen sind. Insgesamt ein sehr empfehlenswertes Buch und ich freue mich schon auf weitere Bücher von dem Autor!

They start with a crime based on an actual case and then look at the way in which the courts are used to serve or hinder justice. The no-frills writing creates an eerie, deadpan atmosphere and the exploration of the legal system makes you ponder whether the Law has any real morality. And for an added frisson of creepiness, keep in mind that Ferdinand is the grandson of Baldur von Schirach, the head of the Nazi Youth who was convicted of crimes against humanity. DUN-DUN!

Für mich etwas schwächer als das erste Buch des Autors. Der Stil ist immer noch sachlich und auf das Wesentliche beschränkt was mir auch weiterhin sehr gut gefällt, doch kam bei mir das Gefühl auf, dass die Geschichten dieses Mal mehr schockieren sollten und dafür das Auftreten und die Rolle des Anwalts und des Rechtssystems mehr in den Hintergrund gerückt wurden.

Mein zweiter von Schirach. Das Buch hat mich echt fertig gemacht... So viele verschiedene Emotionen innerhalb weniger Seiten. Mein Freund und ich haben die zweite Hälfte an einem Stück durchgesuchtet, wir konnten es nicht aus der Hand legen.

Die Geschichten hier sind definitiv nichts für schwache Nerven. Wenn euch das aber nichts ausmacht, solltet ihr unbedingt dieses Buch lesen!
