This book accomplishes what its title says: it provides an in-depth, well-written exposition on the inner working of VMware VSphere 4. This book essentially teaches how to manage an entire IT enterprise, covering everything from (guest) operating system management in a virtual environment to networking to storage. The networking chapter was hands-down my favorite, as I feel like I learned more about vSwitches and Distributed vSwitches then I did even doing my VCP and taking classes from VMware. If you want to get good at VMware, focus on doing your VCP but then use this book to help you learn all the details.

No substitute for hands-on or even a CBT or ILT course but it's more technical and helpful once you've taken those than anything else I've seen if you are looking for general design and administration guidance (not detailed API or SDK or vCLI information).
