I'm so invested in this story and I come to the end only to see that it ends on a cliffhanger... There is no next book and this one was written over 10 years ago... WTF?!?!?!
STEPHANIE BURKE!! HOW COULD YOU WRITE SUCH A GREAT STORY AND LEAVE YOUR READERS HANGING?!?!
Fair warning - this ends with a cliffhanger and it appears the author has not yet completed the series. It's been about 8 years now since this book was written, so I'm not sure how likely there is to be a continuation of the series. Thus, you may never know how this saga ends...or perhaps you could just invent your own ending. I hate cliffhangers. Even in a finished series I hate them, because now there's another book I have to read just to find out the ending. I want a single, completed story that I can finish with closure and cliffhangers deny me that. That's the majority reason for the 1 star, but there are other factors.
The story itself is not bad. It starts out confusing, most especially if it's been a while since you read the first book in the series (or if you haven't read it.) It took me a good 25% of the book to figure out what was going on again. And while the first book focused on the heroine, Star's bonding to her particular mate within the foursome, this book focuses on Star's developing bond with Zol, the other submissive in the quad (who is quite the annoying - I didn't care for him much). He would be the one she has to mate with in order for both of them to carry their eggs (it's quite a unique take on things). So, for me it demeans the bond she just formed with her mate (Zen) when she doesn't have sex with him during the story (the anal he performs while she's mating with Zol so doesn't count) and she's all so entirely focused on having sex with Zol...never so much wanting sex with Zen. And the process by which they impregnate each other was, for me, a bit stomach-turning. Evidently, . Turns out it was a bit too alien for my enjoyment. YMMV. But most of all, I got pissed with the cliffy. Usually I skip to the end of a book to see that it ends well, but I thought, this is erotica, how bad could it be? Yeah. Not happy. I hate it when that happens.
