2 Dead Fish Named Kevin

Rate this book
“Help raise money to improve our habitat! For a small donation, we’ll name a fish after your ex and feed it to the bears on Valentine’s Day!”

For Garrett Mitchell, who just found out his butthead of an ex-boyfriend cheated on him, that donation is money well spent.

And Tristan Waverly was just unceremoniously dumped by a man who is absolutely worthy of being tossed to hungry bears, so he’s more than happy to buy a fish.

As the bears chow down, though, everyone’s wondering the same thing—is it a coincidence, or are both fish named after the same guy?

There’s only one way to find out.

But when Garrett and Tristan come face to face, suddenly the last man either wants to think about is Kevin.

2 Dead Fish Named Kevin is a light, fluffy, and short Valentine’s Day romance (22,500 words)

L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.

Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Witt have been asked to assist in lobster training, but they "have books to write" and "need to focus on our careers" and "don't you think this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand?" They're probably just helping Lauren raise her army of squirrels trained to ride moose into battle.

The entire little book is only 85 pages...but I read everything that this author produces, and I loved the title...so, need I say more? Tristan and Garrett have something in common...the same cheating ex-boyfriend although they weren't sure at the time, they made the donation...and they didn't know one another from "Adam's house cat". They each did wonder what they chances were ...how many cheating, slimy, worthless ex's named Kevin could there be? When they saw the chance to help the environment AND watch their ex's, (even if it was only one), be eaten by hungry bears, they jumped on it, figuring even though it wasn't exactly the cheating ex the bears were snacking on...it was the next best thing, and it gave them each some satisfaction. Well, actually a great deal of satisfaction. In the end, both Tristan and Garrett got old Kevin off their minds and found something much more gratifying than constantly think about him...but watching him symbolically being devoured by the bears is something they would happily pay again and again to see. Cute little book by a really, really good author.

What a fun, cute premise !

I took a break from queer romance for a bit because the frequent homophobia plot elements were stressing me out. I hate it’s the world many live in.

This had none of that, it was funny and sweet and angst-free (other than memories of a crappy ex)

Total Insta - but it had TONS of animals (since Garrett and Tristan met and spent their first meeting at the zoo) which were amusing for me. It also mentioned Komodo dragon, and made me slightly embarassed for being Indonesians and never step my feet at Komodo Island.

Oh, well. Quick read if you can spare an hour of your time.

Meine Meinung dazu gibt’s hier

Audiobook Review

Ok in here we have a short story about how a horrible boyfriend can bring people together.

So we have Garrett, who dumped a guy because he was cheating on him and Tristan, who was dumped by the same guy, Kevin.

They meet via a zoo fundraiser and hit it off immediately. They spend that valentine's day at the zoo together and then they hook up afterwards. Garrett has some issues with sexytimes but they talk and all is good.

A year later, they are living together and can sail off into the sunset.

While I loved the narration, (Michael F is my comfort listen) the story was kind of flat. Most of the time I had no idea who was who. I was very lost in the beginning as the tale started but eventually I figured out what was going on.

But there just wasn't enough background to make these two feel real. Short stories are very hard to do, so I understand how it can happen, which should mean one works harder to make it make sense.

By the end I felt like I knew Kevin better than the mcs.

Two random guys meet because they both made a donation to have a fish named after their mutual ex fed to the bears. They bond over their mutual disdain for Kevin's horrible new haircut and wander the rest of the zoo together.

They mutually decide that watching snow leopard babies is more important than having sex. The rest of the day is spent with Garrett trying to talk Tristan out of petting the big cats and getting mauled to death.

5 stars.

Fine from a technical standpoint, but it was way too short to be that repetitive. The POV character voices were indistinguishable from each other. Lots of the characters laughing at things that weren’t funny. Much telling, little (if any) showing.

Great title, great hook, and an absolutely delightful book. Kevin is a loser, and not just because he lost these 2 guys.

An absolutely perfect Valentine’s Day present to listen to while noshing on some chocolate and cuddling with my cats.

This is a short story given to us by wonderful author LA Witt, and narrated by the always amazing Michael Ferraioulo. This is a dream team for me.

Garrett and Tristan are both recently single, having been duped by a man named Kevin. Each of them see an advertisement from the local zoo, inviting people to name dead fish after their exes. The fish will then be fed to the bears. It’s a rather brilliant premise. When two fish named Kevin are thrown into the bear enclosure. the zookeeper laughingly wonders if it’s the same Kevin. The men exchange notes, and lo and behold, it is.

What happens next is a lovely day spent getting to know one another, and an even better evening. What it boils down to is, when you know you know. Both have been hurt and both are understandably a little skeptical to resume new relationships. It’s just a lovely little story about learning to trust again. AND THERE ARE CATS! Lol

Very sweet romance

Rating: 4🌈

2 Dead Fish Named Kevin by L. A. Witt is a short sweet contemporary holiday romance. It’s built around the idea of a zoo that , as a holiday fundraiser, sells different zoo food for their animal exhibits with the people being able to name the food (fish, crickets, etc) before whatever animals are given them to eat!

Here Witt creates a entertaining situation with two men who each name a fish Kevin after a toxic ex for the Bears to eat. In a highly amusing way, and with help from the zookeeper, they discover it’s not just a name they have in common.

From there we follow as the men get to know each other and share their stories about their experiences with the ex and hopes for the future. All while visiting various animal exhibits at the zoo.

It’s charming, realistic, and engaging.

I liked the men, I enjoyed the relationship they were building , and that there was no immediate instant love but a recognition of like and wanting to see where it goes. Very believable and grounded.

And that made the epilogue that much sweeter.

I’m definitely recommending the very adorable 2 Dead Fish Named Kevin by L. A. Witt. It’s not just for Valentine’s Day but for anyone who enjoys contemporary romance.

As a fundraiser for Valentine's Day, a local zoo offers visitors the opportunity to feed their ex to the bears. Real bears. In the form of fish. Tristan and Garrett both buy a fish for their exes (named Kevin). When his name is called out, they realize they have the same ex boyfriend in common. Turns out that last year before he was dumped, Garrett discovered that Kevin had been cheating on him for most of their two year relationship. Tristan had been with Kevin for a few months and had also been cheated on. The two men are attracted to each other and bond over their horror stories of the notorious Kevin. As the day progresses, they spend it wandering the zoo, wondering if they should act on their attraction. (Spoiler alert: they do. It's a good 25% of this story.)
The idea for this short story is a great one, unfortunately not well executed once the guys start comparing notes. It sets the foundation for their relation around the other guy, and not each other. I skimmed the sex because I found it uncomfortably bad (each character was too involved in their thoughts).
Two stars for being short.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this cute meet cute, Valentine’s Day novella. It was a lot different than all the other books that I’ve read by LA Witt, as her book are way longer and a lot more angst ridden. Not a lot happens during this book, as it’s based all in one day apart from the Epilogue. I thought Garrett and Tristan were great together. They both meet while at the Zoo, when purchasing a fish named after their cheating sh*tty ex Kevin to feed to the bears. They end up meeting and hit it off, when the announcer realises that there are two fish named Kevin, and enquiring minds want to know if they have the same sh*tty ex, which they do. They’re both instantly attracted to each other, and spend the day hanging out and getting to know each other. I’m glad that they found each other, as they now have someone who treats them with respect, as Kevin was an a*se. I’d recommend this book and author to all.

BORING

This is a one way ticket to Snoozeville.
I expected this to be a lighthearted, humorous quick read, but, it's nothing but stilted smalltalk between two guys who are, essentially, strangers.
OK. Granted. There's definitely an attraction between them as they traverse the zoo but for the most part the conversations are centered around inane comments about the animals or comparing notes and trashing the ex.
I've reached 50% and still nothing remotely engaging is happening here.
I'll most likely DNF.

The two stars are for consistently good writing and conscientious editing.

I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this one.

This was short, but I did like it overall. Thinking 3.5-4 out of 5 stars? Tristan was adorable, and I also liked Garrett a lot. I think I resonated with Garrett more, so it brought back feelings of bad relationship I had and how they messed me up. Most of the book was in the zoo, so there were lots of moments with animals. I was a little disappointed they never did videos or built obstacle courses. I got this from KU before it was pulled since I wanted to read as much of this author’s work as possible while I could get it. The epilogue was cute, and I would have liked to see even more of their relationship.

3.5/5 This was a very cute short story around an absurd and hilarious premise, with two guys meeting as they feed their ex (in effigy form of salmon) to a bear in a zoo and discover that they have the *same* bad ex. They’re immediately attracted to one another and find a lot of shared interests (not just be bad ex, lol). We get to see lots of cute animals as they get to know one another better. There were times that I couldn’t remember which one was Garrett and which was Tristan, so I guess I didn’t find they had super distinct voices, but they were both nice, likeable characters who happily found one another in an unusual way.

Fun title for a cute, quick, fun read!

FYI, my reviews come from my reader's heart where it is not easy to explain why one book connects more deeply than others. I reserve full 5 stars for those rare books that consume me as I read, that become favorites that I'll read again and again. I love to read and 3 or 4 star reviews from me are very good, too!!

5 full stars for this cute, fun novella with a unique meeting for MCs Tristan and Garrett. I've enjoyed this author's books for a long time and this is a great stand alone addition to her booklist.

Recommend this book!

Loved this book! The title got me (what do they say about not judging a book by the cover!) and the story sounded intriguing. This ended up being a lovely light read which was just what I needed- no angst just a nice little love story about two guys, Tristan and Garrett, who meet under the unusual circumstance of both having the same ex, Kevin.
There is a Valentines fundraiser, bounding over snow leopards and Komodo dragons. They take a chance on each other even though they are both a little relationship shy after dating Kevin.
A perfect book with a sense of humour and a lovely HEA.

This is cute, without a doubt, but (as usually happens) the novella format just didn't do it any favors. It really needed -- imo -- a novel-length look into these two men and their 'recovery' from Kevin's toxicity (which we don't even have a great look at -- it's implied without really being broken down). I just wanted more. Still, if you like novellas, this is very sweet, and both MCs are easy to like (though not as easy to tell apart -- another issue with the novella; we just don't have enough time to get to know them all that well).

Sweet, insta-love, no-angst novella
L.A. Witt is a must read for me in contemporary romance, and 2 Dead Fish Named Kevin was a delightful, quick read. This is a great first read if you're new to Witt's books. It's a fun story about two men meeting by coincidence at an event at their local zoo where people are invited to contribute money so that they can name one of the dead fish being fed to the bears. Most of the book happens in one day, and includes surprising depth for how short the story is. I loved it and hope others will, too.

Adorable Valentine's treat from L.A. Witt.
Garrett and Tristan meet at the zoo after they each donate money to name a bear food fish after their cheating ex-boyfriend's. Turns out they share the same cheating ex-boyfriend named Kevin.
The story was very short and very very cute. A fun romantic anti-valentine's day story.

This is the PG version of Witt's super sexy book Nine Tenths of the Law. Which I also highly recommend. . . . and also read this Valentine's day!

A really sweet getting together story. Garrett and Tristan meet at a zoo fundraiser to feed their cheating ex, Kevin in effigy to bears. Realizing they dated the same slime-ball leads to commiseration but the instant attraction between them keeps them together, spending the day at the zoo.

The story is simply them connecting and enjoying each other, their unexpected connection and their love of adorable animals.

Cute novella, quick read

I enjoy this author’s work and the premise was unique so I decided to give it a try. I bought both the ebook and the audio and mostly listened but read some too. The audiobook was well done and it made for an enjoyable listen on a road trip.

I liked both MCs right away so I was rooting for their HEA. The story is sweet and low angst and it’s a quick read.

(2,5 stars rated down) I thought the overall idea was entertaining and funny. Meet-cute at the zoo, two guys feeding black bears dead fish named after their cheating douchebag of an ex. However, I found the actual romance between Garrett and Tristan kind of boring. Despite some effort to bring tension to the story by making both characters somewhat leery of getting involved with somebody new, it didn't really work for me.

Themes: dual POV, meet cute, zoo, Valentine's Day

A perfect little valentines romance

Short, cute, discussions of death by "Here kitty, kitty," and chasing dragons... what's not to love. Listening to this narrated by Michael Ferraiuolo is just the icing on the cake.
If you are looking for a short read with the feel goods and some loving heat then this is a great place to go.
