I've read books by Violet Hamers before and they are usually better than this one. This story features all of the usual elements of a regency romance but it doesn't seem very realistic. Veronica and her sister are sponsored by an unmarried duke. Who then moves into their home? This same duke also wants to get revenge on their brother and make Veronica his mistress. I had to roll my eyes when Maxwell the Duke told his butler that the butler should take over as his steward and manage all of his usual business dealings so that Maxwell could focus on Veronica and the revenge plot. The villainess of the story is Maxwell's mother. Yes, she was awful but her character had zero depth.
I would skip this one.

Some parts were very, very good; others....not so much. In the beginning the H comes across as a manwhore without a conscience and the h reacts with an act of desperation out of proportion to how her feelings are demonstrated. As the story moves along...slowly until the H's mother and sister return, then it is almost a 5 star read. The mother is a manipulative, controlling nightmare who is a waste of oxygen. She is responsible for many of the issues faced by the H's sister and the h and her family. Unfortunately she is loved by the soulless ton. Finally the truth comes out and the ending is too fast in the way all issues are resolved. Fortunately the extended epilogue addresses many points that were left hanging. Fortunately, too, toxic Mama was banished to Scotland.

A Desperate Deal With The Duke was a great read. Veronica and Maxwell have amazing chemistry. The sexual chemistry sizzles between them. Damien running off with all of the Wallace money and leaving Maxwells sister ruined and pregnant causing both families to suffer was enough to cause Veronica to agree to be Maxwells mistress for the season so her younger sister could find a husband and the ton not shun their family during Poppy’s debut season. Veronica soon realizes she want Maxwell as much as he wants her. This book is absolutely incredibly sexy. I loved the characters and the book. Thank you Violet Hamers.

When I first started reading Veronica and Maxwell's story, it kept my interest, but after reading the first few chapters, I was loosing interest, because I started not to like Veronica 's character , she wasn't showing much honor with the deal she made with Maxwell to help her sister, find a husband, after the scandal with their brother. She agreed to be Maxwell 's mistress,then she went back on her word.When she discovered she could have a suiter of her own.A deal is a deal, so to me she dishonored Maxwell with her actions.

What an interesting and entertaining journey of love
Definitely a must read and highly recommended. The characters are absolutely interesting and entertaining as well as the story line is inspiring. This journey takes the characters through quite an adventure full of twists and turns throughout the story. It is extremely interesting full of thrilling events and a wonderful extended epilogue to a beautiful happy ending to all the characters. I was so enthralled by the story from beginning to end without being able to put the book down until the end. Excellent writing and definitely recommend reading this amazing book.

Together they chased away their nightmares.
A ruined lady has no choice if her beloved sister is to have a chance at a suitable marriage our lady must do what the duke request. My heart went out to Veronica the scandal was not of her making but still she and her sister must pay the price. There is a true villain in this piece but in the end even snakes get stumped on and chased away. I really liked the characters and I enjoyed the more adult theme to the book the book is also very well written it is one that I am happy to recommend.

Mistress for a season.
Veronica’s brother left in scandal when he compromised a young woman and refused to marry her. Unfortunately that also ruined his own sisters. Veronica was trying to hold things together but everything was slipping away. She approached Duke Maxwell, brother to the woman her brother ruined, and asked for help. He agreed to sponsor her sister Poppy and get their family to rights if Veronica would be his mistress for the season. I loved this book. Great characters and great chemistry between Maxwell and Veronica.

A good read.
I received this ebook free via a link in an email from the author.
I felt a bit of angst developing during the first half of the novel so went off to read something more light hearted, once I returned to the novel I completed it easily. Overall I enjoyed this novel greatly, I found the second half progressed nicely with no angst occurring - but I do believe I needed that break.
The novel ended well.
I did receive this novel free but I honestly enjoyed it and my opinions are my own and are my true feelings.

WHO’S THE CAT AND WHO’S THE MOUSE!
I absolutely loved every minute of this forbidden love story. The banter between Veronica and Maxwell was fascinating to say the least. It was a game of the cat chasing the mouse. But whose the mouse? Veronica plays the game well. Maybe too well. Can seduction go too far? Is love on the horizon! Or will family get in the way? Least I forget, as always there plenty of surprises to go along with the give and take.

Really liked the way the characters are intertwined with a scandal brought on by a young Lord. Even though it was his fault his two sisters are ostracized. Wanting a good match for the younger the older goes to the Duke (who's family is also involved in the scandal). Thinking he might help them just to get her sister married, then she herself would be a spinster. Things don't work out as she expects.

Families can be a blessing or a curse, and the plot of this book definitely explored both options. Veronica and her sister were left destitute after her brother ran away from scandal. Both families experienced countless trials as a result. Veronica was a strong female who guided her family in the absence of a male relative. Somehow, happiness was accomplished for all concerned. This was a good novel with diverse characters and a good plot.

Very good..worth the read
It had a well written storyline the characters Veronica and Maxwell. I enjoyed getting to know along with other characters such as Evelina and Poppy good little twist at the end. The only thing I would have changed is the epilogue it felt rushed and all over the place. It needed at least a one or two more chapters before the epilogue for the story with Alice and Damien.

Fantastic read!
This book kept me interested and intrigued the whole time! Couldn't putvitcdown down. The story was captivating and yet simple about a woman trying to stop her family from total disgrace from the ton and the lengths shell go to. She's a strong heroine and the hero is a total loveable rake who doesn't realize he's falling in love until its too late.

True love
I really liked how the Duke gradually turned from a life of sin into really finding true love. What a lot that family went thru with a mean contemptable mother but how the rest of the females thru pain, sorrow and love stuck together. A very warm ending.

Really enjoyed this book! It was entertaining pulled at the heartstrings, and the characters were really well developed. I've only read one other of her books, will certainly find more.
