Sonya Shafer is a popular homeschool speaker and writer, specializing in the Charlotte Mason Method. She has been on an adventure for more than 20 years studying, researching, practicing, and teaching Charlotte’s gentle and effective methods of education. Her passion for homeschooling her own four daughters grew into helping others and then into Simply Charlotte Mason, which publishes her many books and provides a place of practical encouragement to homeschoolers at https://simplycharlottemason.com/.
As a former classroom teacher, I feel led to go the traditional route in my upcoming homeschool endeavor, but am open to explore other options. This book gave a great overall look at the Charlotte Mason method and gave me several ideas on how to incorporate it into my traditional homeschool approach. The tone of this book is definitely pro-CM method and the descriptions of the different homeschool approaches absolutely reflect that bias.
When I downloaded several ebooks from simplyCharlotteMason.com, I almost skipped over this one, thinking, "I've been home educating for 6 years; I'm hardly 'getting started' homeschooling." However, I'm open to learning new things and hearing different perspectives, so I thought I'd give it a read.
I'm glad I did! It was not so much about beginning homeschooling in general as it was an informative mini-handbook of the Charlotte Mason method. This approach has increasingly fascinated me for several months as I've been learning more about Charlotte's educational philosophy and methods and have been seeking to incorporate them into our homeschool.
This definitely felt like it was written for the sole purpose of influencing people to use the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling. Though interesting, I couldn't help but to feel like I was being manipulated throughout the read. That all said, I do like Charlotte Mason and her style of homeschooling.
I got the free download to this e-book on the Simply Charlotte Mason site. It's not as general as the title implies. It's geared towards the Charlotte Mason method and even then it's geared towards using Simply Charlotte Mason. It was exactly what I was looking for so it suited my needs.
