In 1991, two tourists hiking in the Alps saw something very odd sticking out of the snow. At first it looked like a doll’s head. But it wasn’t. It was a man, frozen in the ice for 5,000 years. Ice Mummy —first published by Random House in 1998—tells the story of this amazing discovery, from the struggle to remove the mummy from his icy grave to the creation of his final resting a specially designed refrigeration chamber in his own museum in Bolzano, Italy.
Now updated to include shocking new evidence that the Iceman was murdered —shot with an arrow after hand-to-hand combat with an assailant— Ice Mummy will provide young readers with more chills than ever!
saw this book at the library and couldn't pass it up. It's about the ice mummy, and how much more badass can you get?? An ice f'ing mummy!
Overall this book was very interesting and I learned a lot about the mummy, although it also makes it sound like the scientists and police at the time were totally clueless.. leaving the mummy unattended for days so tourists could mess with it and take souvenirs, using a jackhammer to get the mummy out of the ice and damaging it, letting the mummy thaw out and then freak out that a 5,300 year old body was rotting.. what the hell??
We actually have a different version of this book. It's a Step Into Reading Book but I a "Step 4" printed in 2009. Anyway, my 7 year old and I both loved this book. That's mostly to do with the fascinating and somewhat gruesome subject matter. But this book was easily tackled by my reluctant reader at age 7 so is best for the average reader who is ready for chapters that include about 4 paragraphs to some pages, mostly 1 or 2 per page. The awesome and gross photographs (all the illustrations are photographs)really keep the pages turning. None of the words should be too challenging for a kid who can read word like this: spreading, temperature, scientists, sculpt, mountains, evidence, important.
Just when I was so happy reading the Junie B Jones books with my son he comes home with this-complete with photographs! He's ridiculously proud to have picked out such a gross book.
The ice mummy was found in the Alps in 1991. In the pictures he looks like an overcooked chicken wing. Seriously, this book is disturbingly gross. Reading it was like watching Fear Factor, I kept flip flopping between gagging and laughing until I couldn't speak. I realize that makes me sound insane but that's how I would get watching people eat maggoty cheese too. My reaction pleased my five year old son to no end and now I'm sure he'll be bringing home lots more books like this to torture me.
Very interesting! Good scientific information, including how people interfere with discoveries, how artifacts can be damaged, how artifacts need to be preserved, how they can give us information, etc. the book includes two theories of how the mummy was created with no consensus on one over the other.
This is a great book it would keep the children very interested about the history of the mummy and the mummy's story the book would be great to use when drawling conclusions.
I think this book is interesting because I know nothing about Ice Mummy before I read this book I think that mummy is mysterious. There are some real photos of the dead bodies in this book which let me stop at those page and have a look of the mummy This book is about a 5000 years old Ice Mummy died in the ice mountain and some people found him in a trip. The book also shows us some other different mummy’s so that we can compare the difference between ice mummy and different types.
Fascinating kids book with an imaginative look at the discovery of a mummy frozen in the ice high in the mountains of Italy. I especially liked that they dated the age of the person as thousands of years instead of millions.
I can't speak to the accuracy or anything like that, but five stars for holding my 8yo's attention and inspiring lots of questions and discussion about mummies and early human history.
Wow, real photos of the Iceman. That makes the story so good to read. The theory of his death is not written well but the rest of the report is awesome and well worded for the little readers.
I read this book many times in elementary school. It always interested me how someone could be missing for many years and no one ever finds them. Sad story but cool facts.
