After escaping the witch coven that held her captive, Veronica discovers that what she feared was actually true...she can never go home. Her grandmother sends her away, to a woman who can help her learn how to control the magic she has but Veronica fears she will never be truly happy again, separated as she is from her family. She spies on her sister, witnessing things that truly scare her. Will anyone listen to her? Will her grandmother take her worries seriously?
LEARNING MAGIC is the second book that follows Veronica’s story and her training in witchcraft and magic. It’s a spinoff from the Fairytale Hunters series (which is amazing!) where Veronica’s sister Zoey was a main character. Here, Zoey is twelve, and mostly off-screen. Veronica has grown up in a family that has a legacy of being magic Hunters, and they often hunt witches. So when she is born a witch, it causes her to be disowned from the family. In this book, we see her develop her powers more under the training of Melinda, an experienced witch, with her friends Candy and Katrina staying with them to learn magic as well. There’s also a good romance subplot with her ex (current?) BF Trevor. Veronica has feelings for Trevor, but after the events of book one where he did something huge, she had doubts. Plus, can a witch and a hunter ever find true love? I love the complicated family dynamics in this series. There’s the powerful grandparents and their complicated feelings for their granddaughters, one a hunter, one a witch, plus some court politics coming into play. And I also love the fierce love Veronica has for her sister Zoey and her determination to keep her safe, whatever the cost. 5/5 stars.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from the author for review purposes.
In Learning Magic, Melinda is a witch who agrees to help Veronica hone her magical powers so she can protect her family. Veronica also finds love along the way. I especially appreciated how Veronica used her magic to entice and trap her enemies, but I don't want to give anything away. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read more from this author.
I am really enjoying this series. The lengths Veronica will go to for her little sister shows how much she loves her. Even though she is trying to come to terms with her new life and grow as a witch she still struggles with the fact that she can't see her family. What will happen next, how much must she give up for the safety of others. I look forward to reading more.
