Sexual Prowling set in a fast paced futuristic setting sure to please those who love layers of sinful devourings and adventure.

I've found myself reading a ton of Sci-fi romance lately and I thank my lucky stars that they were books that were easy coming for newbies. Gambit, on the other hand, had me dropped to the ground full out running.

The world setting is a big chunk to chew but thankfully it is very tasty :D A newbie may find difficulty in all the terms used but not so much the structure of the world. The structure was easy to grab it was the new words on my tongue but it didn't hold me back as much as you would think. I just highlighted in on my Kindle in the notes so if needed later I could easily refer back. Plus, I just pronounce new terms however I please and move on. I hate to disrupt the reading flow. Highlight of hitting the ground running: Kim Knox doesn't waste breathe explaining to death. It is what it is and details provided are necessary to the storyline of character development. I find it a refreshing way to read a new world.

Characters. I would say there weren't many notable sub-characters. There are no best friends or side kicks. Mainly it is just Chae and Daned on their own braving the journey through the atmosphere in a small and poorly agile tau-class ship. Having the two solely rely on one another is key to accepting the romance blooming from the lust they both share.

Romance: What I loved the most about the romance was the idea of Permanence. It read to me like that of soul-mates. Something deeper- soul calling to soul but in Chae and Daned's case it's genes calling to genes. They are a genetic match.

All in all, Gambit is perfect for romance lovers who are comfortable with reading Sci-fi and steamy scenes. I'm not to sure I can go toe to toe with a true buff of the genre but I feel comfy enough to read sci-fi with the best of them.
So, yes, I'm eager to read more from this author. In fact, I've already got my eye on a few. I enjoy Kim's writing. She dishes the adventure, suspense, and lusty romance in grand proportions.

More like a 3.5 star review for me.

Being the self confessed nerd that I am, I was attracted to this book due to the science fiction and fantasy element, as well as the intriguing cover. First of all let me say that if you are not a science fiction fan, you will probably not like this book. Mostly, since the reader is thrust into this a futuristic, alien world, with little time for world building or background preparation. At times it was a bit overwhelming. However, if you manage to hold on tight and make it through the rough patches, there is a wonderful romance story between Chae and Daned.

Captain Chae Beyon is a street smart pilot who is just trying to get ahead in a pretty gloomy world. She is blackmailed into flying Daned Traern to Ladaia where the ruling leaders are gathering to select ruler. As a representative of the Ladaian race, Daned is honor bound to arrive on the planet to secure his race’s claim to rule. Daned poses as Chae’s sex toy, so he can get on her ship, without drawing the attention of the Ladaian enemies, so they can get to Ladaia ”safely.”

Their journey is filled with multiple obstacles, that bind the characters, leads to hot steamy sex and ultimately draws them together. Once Chae and Daned reach Ladaia they have one final battle to face. In order to win the battle they have to finally admit their love and unite to secure the throne, but nothing turns out as was originally expected.

Overall, Gambit is a good book. I would be interested in seeing what the author could do if this novella was expanded to a regular size book. Like I mentioned earlier it was one action packed ride. Chae is a strong, self-sufficient character that I enjoyed. Daned was less than satisfying, since I prefer my hero to be a bit more alpha male. But all together Chae and Daned’s chemistry and story works.

Unsual worldbuilding, tight writing, and a Romance that pulls you along.

At first I wasn't sure if I'd like this story. The heroine came across to me as a foul-mouthed nympho, and the hero a cold and manipulative rich guy. Turns out both had their reasons.

The sex was hot but not overwhelming. They didn't grope when they were in danger. I liked that.

The worldbuilding and high speed plot kept me interested until the romance had hooked me so deeply that I lost two nights sleep reading this SFR.

Now, normally, it's the SF that keeps me reading to the end. With this one, the Romance is what kept me going, despite the rocky start for me.

This novella had a deep world, lots of history and hints of larger issues. The tech was almost like fantasy explained by science. The "bad guys" had depth. The romance? Not your typical happy-go-lucky. Both the h/h are angry, smart and a bit manipulative. Lots of dark undercurrent, and darker personal histories. But it works because both like the darkness in the other. It's almost like a vampire or demon romance in that both people know that darkness is there and like it. Neither seems the type to fall in love with a sweet and sunny person.

It has hot sex, (lots of it), a HEA, lots of emotion and twists I didn't see coming. The tech is interesting and important.

After finishing this I went out and bought two more of Ms. Knox's stories. I plan to read all of her SFRs now.

Gambit was a strange little novel. It started off as a very intriguing bit of erotic science fiction, but halfway through, the entire tone of the story changed and left me scratching my head. I enjoyed it well enough, but the abrupt shift and the shortness hobbled what I think had the potential to be a really intriguing SF/erotic romance.

We’re dropped right into the action, which is always a good way to start a story. Chae, our smart-assed, messed up heroine, is suffering the effects of a truth device while being “interviewed” for a dangerous transport job. She takes the job and soon finds out that she’s bitten off more than she can chew as she and Daned, the sexy handler she has to get to Ladaia Prime, her mother’s birth planet, so his family can claim the empty imperial throne.

The first half of Gambit was thrilling. I love the inventive universe, with its manufactured sex partners, mind-altering metals, and gritty settings, and I love that the heroine isn’t the most likable character. She’s wary of intimacy, which is why she buys her “flesh” rather than seeking out human partners, and her rough-and-tumble background makes her a tough, self-sufficient woman. She’ll cheat you before she’ll help you, and it was refreshing to have a heroine with an attitude like that. She isn’t the typical spunky heroine, nor the kind of bad-ass heroine who’s really a big softy inside. As she starts to soften toward Daned, I could really believe that she was feeling some seriously life-changing emotions.

Which is why I was so startled at the sudden change halfway through the book. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but when Chae and Daned make it to Ladaia Prime and find themselves in a struggle for the throne, I suddenly felt like I was reading another book that was tacked onto the end of the first one. The story’s pace slowed down considerably, so that the final climax of the book felt like less of a climax than the exciting mid-point pinnacle in action.

By the end of the book, I felt like the happy ending was a bit manufactured, and I think that’s because the book felt short to me. Since it’s an ebook, it’s difficult to say exactly how long it is, but the feeling of shortness could be because of the pacing. The first half was very tense and exciting, and then it dropped off and meandered for a while, then dashed to a second climax and boom, the end.

Gambit had a lot of potential, and I really love the SF setting. There’s not enough SF romance in my life. I just felt like I was being rushed to a conclusion that sadly felt unnatural based on the awesome first half of the book.

How I got this book: NetGalley

This past year I have discovered some absolutely incredible Science Fiction Romance authors: Linnea Sinclair, Gini Koch, and KS Augustine to name a few. With that, I got super excited about the genre. However, I’ve also found myself somewhat disappointed with the genre as well. Knox’s new release from Carina Press was one of those that just didn’t really do the best job of drawing me in and keeping me engaged in the story.

Chae is a pilot, floating through life doing odd and end type jobs to survive. When she is bribed into taking Daned to the Ladaian planets, he must pose as her flesh toy in order for stay hidden to those who want to ruin their plans.

On their journey, the two must overcome multiple obstacles, the loss of Chae’s ship and the junker they get stuck with, a plot to stop them at whatever the costs, and a burning desire to bind themselves to each other on a permanent basis.

When Chae and Daned finally reach Ladaia, their plans quickly take a turn for the unexpected, and Chae finds herself in a position that she did not want to be in. She and Daned must decide if their love can prevail over their responsibilities to their world.

There were times when I really just didn’t like Chae very much. She seemed to me to be a little on the whiney side. There were times when she really just didn’t want to accept whatever was happening, when she would cry and moan about what was going on, instead of doing everything in her power to change the circumstances.

When a couple is fated or perfect for one another, I have a hard time dealing with it if they are also perfectly happy giving up on each other. There were too many times with Daned didn’t seem like he cared enough to fight for his chance with Chae, and that didn’t settle right with me.

I was glad to see that Chae and Daned were able to work things out in the end. Knox had me worried for a minute there that things just really were helpless. I’m glad that Chae and Daned were able to find a way to be together, and yet still be able to rule together as well.

I do have to say that this book was steamy!! Chae and Daned had some amazing chemistry together, and Knox heats up the pages with them. It was a definite hot rollercoaster ride.

All in all, I give Gambit 2.5 out of 5 talking chairs!

Gambit is a novel by Kim Knox and a Futuristic Romance from Carina Press.

Book Blurb:

Captain Chae Beyon is a hustler, a mercenary pilot, a wounded woman who prefers her men to be easily thrown aside.

Daned Traern is a first-caste Ladaian bound by tradition and DNA to protect his race. He's willing to align himself with the hot space captain if she'll transport him home in time to ensure the right candidate is crowned-and thus prevent a bloody war.

Disguised as Chae's sex toy, Daned is erotically bound to her through living gold, alien tech designed to increase pleasure. When he frees himself, their passion only increases...but succumbing to temptation will bind them together-permanently.

But there's more at stake than their needs. As Chae is dragged into a world of insane princes and sentient stones, hired killers hound them across the quadrant.

And then, as only her lousy luck would have it, Chae must choose between the good of the galaxy and her own heart...

My thoughts:

Chae Beyon is a Runner - always looking for the next score, whether it be taking someone in a game of cards or transporting merchandise off planet. Whatever will make the most money in the shortest amount of time.

Now she has been asked - a little forcibly, to transport cargo to Ladaian-Prime - and if the cargo arrives safely, within the given time frame - Chae will walk away with more money than she could make in ten lifetimes.

Daned Traern is part of the cargo. He has to get to Ladaian-Prime or all is lost for his people. Going undercover is the quickest and safest way for Daned to travel.

But pretending to be a sex toy may not have been the best route to go. The situation between Chae and Daned becomes all too real - and neither are prepared for the consequences.

I really enjoyed Gambit. I have wanted to read Kim Knox for the longest time - so when I received my E-Reader, Gambit was the first book I downloaded.

I give Gambit 4 out of 5 stars.

I love everything I've read by Kim Knox, and this is no different....Captain Chae Beyon is a wild mercenary and a pilot who is dragged against her will into an imperial power struggle, by one of the many ruthless houses seeking to control the imperial “sunder-seld” (or throne, in other words). What comes with the deal is her instant attraction to the candidate for whom she’s been hired, Daned Traern, a Laidaian first caste. Yet Daned isn’t exactly interested in Chae for more than the power of her ship and its ability to get him to Ladaian Prime so he can win control of the sunder-seld before anyone else. Once he does, he can do what the other candidates haven’t even considered in their lust for power: protect his people from the terrible Host. And the only way they can sneak past the schemers who’ll gladly kill the both of them, in order to control the imperial seat, is for Daned to pose as Chae’s sex toy.

A prospect Chae doesn’t mind in the least, as long as there’s a nice fat payment of black crystal waiting for her, she’ll agree to the trip. If she can get Daned to actually do more than pose, well that would just be icing on the cake. Daned’s not so keen on the idea of this posing as-toy-thing, but even he can’t deny the intense heat between them—despite the fact that Chae’s a lowly third caste and daughter of a renegade/outcast at that. Surely Chae isn’t someone he can actually care for, let alone bond with . . . is she?

Fate has other ideas and what happens when the reach Ladaia-prime will shock the whole system.

Gambit by Kim Knox is a sexy thrill ride where the tables are turned so many times that it seems like no one place or 'person' is safe in the entire universe. This uncertainty stems ultimately from the basic premise of the book - that a man (Daned Traern) is hiring a female pilot (Chae) to make sure that he's in the right place at the right time. They're fighting time, space, other contenders for a powerful (and rich!) throne, as well as avoiding frequent brushes with death and treachery. To make the mission work, they also have to fight their attraction to one other.

Knox's novel is a sci-fi/romance mashup with an excess of plot. What the reader (or at least, THIS reader) wants is to figure out if and how the main characters can make a relationship work. What the reader gets is a sci-fi adventure, protracted chase scenes, and flashes of romance and intrigue. Sometimes it functions, and sometimes it doesn't. Chae is a strong, self-sufficient heroine, but her moments of self-doubt make her more believable and lovable. Daned is slightly less satisfying, but the overall chemistry both flames and keeps you guessing. Verdict: decent romance, lots of action, and some very interesting interstellar travel and space culture.

Recommended for: sci-fi romance fans.

I never know what to expect with these sexy scifi numbers - I guess it is pretty much like the genre in general. Some just overwhelm you with world building, different languages, alien races etc., until your head is spinning and you are trying to distinguish a Romulan from a Shinon Companion. Gambit was a bit on the over-whelming side - Knox sort of plunges you in feet first, but once you regain your footing the story was highly imaginative, very sexy and an enjoyable read. It was rather like a naughty Firefly just with a bit more genetic manipulation, some Dune references and a bit of Star Trek flavoring to round it out nicely. Read More

I really wanted to like this book. It's SFR, which I adore, and it's from Carina Press, a publisher that I like to support. Unfortunately, the relationship between the hero and heroine shifts way too fast from dislike to mutual love/lust. This is attributed to some strange link between them, which seemed to me like an excuse for not working to develop their relationship in other ways.

I did like the hero, who starts out very enigmatic; the heroine was a lot more difficult to warm up to. While this book ultimately didn't do it for me, I would definitely give this author another try. I think there's a lot of potential here.

I loved this book. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to enjoy it that much, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Chae is a merc in a futuristic world of humanoids. She is a "mongrel" andof the lowest cast. She will take on any job, as long as it pays. Her latest job turns out to be more than she expected though. Chae must smuggle Daned onto a heavily guarded planet so he can be the first Ladaian male to sit on the throne. In order to keep cover Daned will pose as a sex slave that Chae has purchased.

The easy job turns out to be not so easy, and in the midst of all the danger to life and limb Chae also finds herself battling a real attraction to Daned.
