“Do you swear to reveal to this jury of your peers, the truths you’ve withheld from your lord and master?”
In the afterlife, Josette has made a pact with the Dark Lord to try Angelique for crimes against true love. But Josette’s time spent as a restless spirit has taken its toll. Is she strong enough to take on her old adversary? If Angelique is convicted, then her soul is forfeit, restoring Josette to life and beauty. If not...
Josette playing a dangerous game puts Angeligue on trial with The Dark Lord as judge. Josette and Angeligue fighting over their love for Barnabas but at the risk of Josette losing her soul to The Dark Lord.
This was an enjoyable court story that's provided with very good performances from the cast. 8/10
Another okay but pointless entry into the Dark Shadows canon. This one pits Josette and Angelique against each other in The Court of Love in the afterlife… Yeah. It’s as cheesy as it sounds. On one hand, it’s kind of cool to hear Josette speak to Angelique with the knowledge of Angelique’s villainous deeds and for her to quite literally speak her mind.
Unfortunately, it just becomes the bickering of two women about a man. It just comes off as a bit sexist and off-putting. They almost go into deeper thoughts, like how they are “like” sisters (too bad that plot point from Angelique’s Descent wasn’t expanded upon), and then they revert to fighting over Barnabas. There were some bits from Martinique that were awesome to hear before they fell short. A lot of it feels uncharacteristic. They reference Lara Parker’s book, but not enough to stick by it. Like having Angelique willing to serve the Dark Lord’s will was out of character. And so was having Josette deal with him.
The writing is fine, just repetitive. And the voice work is decent enough. It just suffers from the actress's aging voices. Like I can kind of hear Josette through the performance, but once again, it sounds more like an elderly Kathryn Leigh Scott. I guess that’s just going to be a thing I have to accept moving forward.
This felt unnecessary, and just was Angelique and Josette arguing about the same plot point over and over again for an hour. Josette putting Angelique on trial seemed like a great idea, but in execution it didn't really hold my interest.
The above was my first listen back in 2020. I noticed that Lost Girl is a sequel to this, and so I relistened before going on to Lost Girl (2024), and my review is the same. This really felt unnecessary, and little more than a rehash of plot points we are already familiar with from watching the show.
A good entry into the series which has Josette putting Angelique on trial...in the afterlife! With the Dark Lord as judge! Someone should have warned her...the Dark Lord doesn't play fair. That's why he'd the Dark Lord. Angelique excels herself here, twisting Josette's words and the events of the past to her own ends. Well written and performed, but at the end, one is left wondering...was that it? Nothing more? Hmm. Okay. Angelique fans will rejoice.
Great Dark Shadows adventure. Josette puts Angelic on trial for destroying her happiness. Will Angelic be damned to all hell fire or will she turn the tables on Josette and the jury. You'll have to find out.
Angelique (Lara Parker) and Josette (Kathryn Leigh Scott) face off in court, battling over who truly loves Barnabas. How can that be anything less that perfect? Especially given the high price of losing... Because yeah there's also the fact that the Dark Lord plays a major role in the trial.
The premise of this one was interesting but... it became an unending fight between Angelique and Josette about Barnabas, arguing the same points once and again. And again. And again. *sighs*
