Known primarily as a novelist, Kurt Vonnegut was also a skilled short story writer. WELCOME TO THE MONKEYHOUSE collects the best of his short fiction.
I love Vonnegut's surrealism and freewheeling humor---both sandwiched in the often mannered structures of these stories. You have to remember that many of these selections were first published in magazines like SATURDAY EVENING POST and COLLIER'S---solidly middle-class publications that Mom and Dad read after dinner. Which makes the more off-the-wall touches ("Billy the Poet") KV adds even more delightful.
When I was writing my most recent book, Vonnegut was my biggest inspiration. Specifically, it was Vonnegut in WELCOME TO THE MONKEYHOUSE.
The early stories are rich with imagination, but that probably goes without saying. You can see the starting point here, before he delved into more surreal territory.
Welcome to the Monkeyhouse is my favorite Vonnegut. Insightful stories that stick with you. "Welcome to the Monkeyhouse" and "Harrison Bergeron" were my absolute favorite stories. I refence them frequently in conversation and reviews. Vonnegut's voice can be both dark and humorous, his style crafty and obvious. He makes it all look so easy.
Kurt will make you THINK, and his short stories are perfect for quick introspection. I listened to this on the was from Stanardsville, Virginia to Hubert, North Carolina. I would stop the CD after each tale to think. I recommend it to anyone who needs to think on a long trip.
