THE book for strip kayak building. Nick knows his subject and is even willing converse with you about questions or comments about the strip building process. Built my first kayak using this book. It is the most beautiful boat I have.

Not only a guide on how to make kayaks, but also a significant section on kayak design for stability, maneuverability, and general seaworthiness. A comprehensive book.

If you want to learn about building a kayak, build it, and then paddle it, this is the book for you!

I read the book, built the kayak, and now proudly paddle a cedar strip kayak!

Thanks to Nick,

I got interested in building my own kayak when I was on vacation in Ireland and saw a man who’d build about a half dozen or so, blown away by the beauty. To help me see if if I could do this I did some looking at books while on vacation so I could better understand what was before me if I chose to do this.

This is a nice book! I like what the author did; he’s candid about the task and tools necessary. He doesn’t talk as much about the wood working skills required but does give you enough of an idea so you can feel it. The most important part is seeing the phases of building and understanding the tasks in each of them; it’s a doable task and this book is a good reference as you’re going through the building process to guide you.
