Edgar Allan Poe American Poet and Mystery Writer By Alan L. Paley is a biography about Poe's life, literary works, as well as his contemporaries. Poe was born in Boston in 1809. Poe’s parents were both actors, shortly after Poe’s birth his father abandoned him and his mother is believed to have died three years later in 1812. After the death of Poe’s mother, Joe Allan who was a Richmond merchant adopted Edgar Allan Poe. Poe died in 1849 at the age of forty due to a fatal seizure that took place on October 3, 1849 right outside of Ryan's Fourth Ward Polls in Baltimore. Edgar Allan Poe died four days later at a Baltimore Hospital. Some of Poe’s most famous works consist of “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Raven”, “Fall of the House of Usher”, and “The Purloined Letter.” is first published book was Al Aaraaf and his first collection of poems was known as the Tamerlane.
The theme of Edgar Allan Poe American Poet and Mystery Writer is perseverance. Throughout the novel Paley refers to the struggles Poe faced throughout his life. Paley writes, “Ignored by the public during his own lifetime, Edgar Allan Poe’s stature grew rapidly in the nineteenth century, to the point where he became one of the most cherished literary figures of the schoolmarms.” (Paley, 1). During Poe’s lifetime he was never well known, however he never gave up his love of writing. Poe once wrote that he wanted to write, despise those who disagreed with his writing style. Paley says, “His mother, foster mother, brother and wife would all die young, like poe himself…” (Paley, 9). This quote tells of the losses Poe endured before he would pass himself. However, Poe never lost sight of his goal of becoming an accomplished writer even though of many of his supporters and loved ones would die. He would persevere through all of his traumatic times and continue to write and eventually accomplish his dream.
Alan Paley writes this novel in a third person biography, a description, as well as a narration. An example of the biography and narration style is, “Poe was born Edgar Poe in 1809, the child of strolling actors. His father deserted his mother shortly after his birth, and is generally believed to have died shortly afterward. Poe’s mother died in Richmond in 1812, Whereupon Edgar was taken into the household of John Allan, a prosperous Richmond Merchant, who has no children by his wife and was moved to take him in at her urging.” (Paley, 6). This is in biography and narrative form because Paley is describing Poe’s life to the reader and Paley is writing about Poe’s life in the order of events in which they took place. These styles are effective because the reader learns about Edgar Allan Poe’s life and understands what Paley was writing about. Paley writes, “These preoccupations were intensified as a result of the death of Mrs. Jane Standard, the mother of a school friend whom Poe admired and loved for her intellectual qualities and her beauty.” (Paley, 9-10). This is an example of descriptive style because Paley describes why Poe loved and admired Mrs. jane Standard. This writing style is effective because the reader gets a sense of the love Poe shared with many of his family members as well as his close friends.
It has been shown that, Paley’s purpose for writing Edgar Allan Poe American Poet and Mystery Writer was that those who love and appreciate Poe’s literary works could learn more about his life. I rather enjoyed this novel, it taught me a lot of interesting facts about Edgar Allan Poe’s life. I would recommend this short novel to anybody interested in Edgar Allan Poe’s literary works as well as anyone who likes to read interesting biographies.

I learned a lot about methadone from this book. (Which may not be a ringing endorsement, as I knew basically nothing before I read this book). Anyway, this was informative and easy to read.
