Chris has been feeling more and more like a third wheel in between John Soong and Andrei Voronin. He's been cruising gyms and bars looking for hook-ups, and one finds him. Nikita (or as Chris calls him, "Nicky") had promised protection to Andrei only to find out that Zaitsev hired Chris to kill him. Nikita had never had anyone die on his watch, and he was determined to kill Chris. Only Chris was nothing like Nikita expected, and the attraction was instant and explosive.
Nikita wavers in his determination because Chris appeals to his secret desire for men (which he's never acted on previously, though he was very protective of Voronin). Chris gets the impression that Nikita had wanted Voronin as a lover but never had the chance, so if he finds out that Andrei is still alive, anything they have going will disappear. They cross paths a couple of times before Chris reluctantly has to leave Nikita behind.
But neither can forget the other. Nikita pulls in all of his favors to find out anything he can about Chris and who he works for. He manages to come up with the name GORGON, but not much else.
The more Chris and Nikita come together (or are apart), the more John and Andrei become worried about Chris and what or who he's getting himself involved with, and whether or not he's jeopardizing their missions and his job with GORGON. But Chris is the moth to Nikita's flame, and they're not going to be kept apart for long, even if it costs Chris his job.
So, it's been a long time since I read the first book, and I probably should have re-read the first one before starting this one, because while the story is good about giving you the basic plot outline of what happened in the previous book, I don't remember anything about the emotions of the characters in those situations. So, without having reread, I took what was said at face value as that's how it was.
Even without having reread the first book, I very much enjoyed this one. There is something so hot about two alpha males sizing each other up, finding strengths and weaknesses, and tackling each other into super steamy sex scenes. And there's also some light BDSM in this story between Nikita and Chris. (blindfolds, restraints, minor but not graphic cutting.) Chris and Nikita were well portrayed and their characters and exchanges consistent throughout the story. They both remained alphas all the way through, which I appreciated.
John rather annoyed me in this story. I don't remember if he was like that in the first story, but man, he annoyed me this time around. Fortunately, this story doesn't focus on him and he's not in too many scenes.
If I have any one complaint, the ending seemed ... clipped. Too convenient? Too rushed? Something that didn't quite work for me given who they are and the work they do. That gives it 4.5 stars.
I don't remember the first book well enough to know whether I like this one more, but I suspect this one would come out on top in comparison.
