On their last assignment, GORGON agents Chris Gibson and his partner John Soong protected Russian mob lawyer Andrei Voronin rather than killing him. They covered Andrei’s tracks, forged a shaky relationship, and their international intelligence and paramilitary group staged Andrei’s death and took him into the fold. Nikita Kazakov, a Russian cop who had used Andrei as a source and promised him protection, plots to avenge his protégé. He soon tracks down Chris—the “killer”—only to find a man he desires, and Chris is just as intrigued. Amidst the danger of the unsolved mystery still lingering around Andrei, Chris and Nikita stalk each other, meet for heated sex, and try to work out who the other criminal, cop, hitman… or lover.
Magnificent re-read. When a book is as powerful the second time around as it was the first...heaven!
hot damn!
how come all these russians are so bloody hot!?!!!
Now this is the main course of Gorgon: Chris and Nikita. Can I get a little Nikita on the side please? pretty pouty please? that man is scorching hot, sexy as hell, strong and silent and soooooo tender..oh my god. If there is a hero-type I like, it's this one.
But I kept picturing him like a real brute...and yet he's such a good man. I swear Aleksandr Voinov is rocking my world. What is it about his writing that is so powerfull and straight to the point? that man can write one sentence and tell an entire story! it's fantastic!
gotta stop the raving but it's un-be-lie-va-ble!
the bdsm in this book is exactly how i like it... subdued powerful, not too much master/slave stuff and yet...the way Chris relinquished control and is liberated... ooh what a moment! truly a book to cherish:)
Really liked. There's something about the Russian MC characters that Alek brings to life that makes me fall in love with them. There's a bit of cutting in here so if that bothers you, be warned. That alone brings Vadim to mind wit theRussian MC, Nikoli.
Amazing story, amazing characters. Best couple Chris/Nikita ever. Love their snarky interchanges. This had every thing that pushes my buttons, good story, good dialogue, great sex, and espionage. Who, I ask could ask for anything more?
"This is mine. This. All of it, all of him." That says it all.
Why not 5? At one point, I think it was at the 75%, there was a sex scene that wasn't really meaningful in my opinion, not as much as the previous ones. It seemed a bit rushed, a series of actions which lacked the intimate, passionate participation of the protagonists. It ripped me out of the story too much and it took me a little while to go back to the atmosphere that the authors had set until that moment.
I enjoyed this book so much more than the previous one Clean Slate. In that book there was action and sex, but I also need a connection with the characters that I couldn't find. My favorite character of that book, Chris, is the protagonist of the sequel, together with Nikita, who seems to hold something personal against him. I have to say that enemies-to-lovers is one of my favorite themes, so I might not be objective, because I'd read this theme hundreds of times and never get tired of it. I really appreciated that the sexual attraction is so important since their very first meeting and that the two are literally hungry for each other. They played a really fascinating game of seduction/submission and I liked seeing Chris surrender to Nikita and question his loyalties for the men.
Nikita was an interesting man, a Russian cop who decided to channel his innate violent instincts into a questionable line of work, but closer to the good side. Nikita is honest with himself, he knows he is not the nicest guy, but at the same time he doesn't shy away from the feelings of tenderness mixed with obsession that he feels for Chris. Chris is still the most interesting character in my opinion, probably because he really has to face his most surprising desires to be with Nikita. He tries to make space for Nikita in his life, he tries to make everyone see the real man, even when he doesn't really know him.
I liked seeing John's - Chris's former lover and colleague - reaction to Chris's new love. He annoyed me a little bit, but I think it's understandable that he's afraid for Chris as a friend. I wished there would be more moments with the confrontation between Chris, John and Andrei, where we could see how the menage was falling apart, how it wasn't working for Chris, because I think this was where his need to belong turned into his submission to Nikita.
This is book 2 in the GORGON series. In this story we revisit Chris Gibson who we last saw as the third in a partnership/threesome. Chris is an American in the secret organization based in Switzerland and operating throughout Europe. Now Chris seems to be searching for something all his own and that's where we meet Nikita. Nikita is trying to find the man he believes responsible for killing one of his contacts and that's how he & Chris intersect. When they meet it's part interrogation and part instant attraction. Their paths keep crossing but they remain wary of each other unsure of what side the other is working for. All they are certain of is their attraction.
I liked Chris in the last book and I'm glad to read that he did get his own HEA. The ending he had previously just didn't ring true. And even in this book it seems that despite that fact that he says he cares for the other two men, he still seems to hold some hostility or jealous regarding their relationship. Nikita is a man that is both loving and dangerous. I wish this story has continued past the start of what seemed to be the actual admission of mutual feelings. I would have liked to have seen what happens when they attempt to settle in and what kind of rules they need. Will Nikita continue to DOM Katya? Will CHris continue to sleep with John, Andrei and anyone else he pleases? Will they get jealous of the other people in their lives? I would like to read another book about these two. I think I could read multiple books about these two. While I found the sort of sentimental relationship between Andrei and John ok, I was captivated by the relationship between Chris & Nikita and hope to see how it continues to unfold...
I know I marked this as BDSM, but really it's very, very light BDSM. Some bondage, some D/s and some knife play, but again nothing major.
In some aspects this book is more solid, than the first part, which is rather rarely for the sequels, imo. I liked it, but I think I still can't get over the fact, that all Nikita wanted at first was to avenge Andrei's supposed death, but when he first gets his hands on Chris and has sex with him - he kind of forgots about revenge and just leaves. I mean the guy's travelled half of the world and then... nothing? Obviously it's not a big deal in romance books, but it jarred me here, I'm not sure why.
I've read other books by Aleksandr Voinov and loved them very much. This one didn't entirely work for me, unfortunately. It left me cold, because while I kinda liked Nikita, I didn't feel a connection to the main characters and their story. I also found there was too much sex and not enough plot and that little plot there was, was confusing to me, but maybe that's because I haven't read the first book.
Chris has been feeling more and more like a third wheel in between John Soong and Andrei Voronin. He's been cruising gyms and bars looking for hook-ups, and one finds him. Nikita (or as Chris calls him, "Nicky") had promised protection to Andrei only to find out that Zaitsev hired Chris to kill him. Nikita had never had anyone die on his watch, and he was determined to kill Chris. Only Chris was nothing like Nikita expected, and the attraction was instant and explosive.
Nikita wavers in his determination because Chris appeals to his secret desire for men (which he's never acted on previously, though he was very protective of Voronin). Chris gets the impression that Nikita had wanted Voronin as a lover but never had the chance, so if he finds out that Andrei is still alive, anything they have going will disappear. They cross paths a couple of times before Chris reluctantly has to leave Nikita behind.
But neither can forget the other. Nikita pulls in all of his favors to find out anything he can about Chris and who he works for. He manages to come up with the name GORGON, but not much else.
The more Chris and Nikita come together (or are apart), the more John and Andrei become worried about Chris and what or who he's getting himself involved with, and whether or not he's jeopardizing their missions and his job with GORGON. But Chris is the moth to Nikita's flame, and they're not going to be kept apart for long, even if it costs Chris his job.
So, it's been a long time since I read the first book, and I probably should have re-read the first one before starting this one, because while the story is good about giving you the basic plot outline of what happened in the previous book, I don't remember anything about the emotions of the characters in those situations. So, without having reread, I took what was said at face value as that's how it was.
Even without having reread the first book, I very much enjoyed this one. There is something so hot about two alpha males sizing each other up, finding strengths and weaknesses, and tackling each other into super steamy sex scenes. And there's also some light BDSM in this story between Nikita and Chris. (blindfolds, restraints, minor but not graphic cutting.) Chris and Nikita were well portrayed and their characters and exchanges consistent throughout the story. They both remained alphas all the way through, which I appreciated.
John rather annoyed me in this story. I don't remember if he was like that in the first story, but man, he annoyed me this time around. Fortunately, this story doesn't focus on him and he's not in too many scenes.
If I have any one complaint, the ending seemed ... clipped. Too convenient? Too rushed? Something that didn't quite work for me given who they are and the work they do. That gives it 4.5 stars.
I don't remember the first book well enough to know whether I like this one more, but I suspect this one would come out on top in comparison.
Sunshine, Shadow, and Darkness- Thoughts on Reading Voinov's First Blood I am currently enamoured of the sunrise, rising early each morning to watch dawn break over the world, through the forest, chasing shadows as it comes. The dawn inspires me, it puts life in persepctive, and it brings peace.
But that is not to say I haven't spent my share of time watching the sunset on sandy beaches, chasing the horizon through hills and pastures, watching shadows creep into the world and darkness cloak it all. And in those moments too, I find beauty.
The world is not all sunshine, it exists in shadow and darkness, and the human heart and soul are likewise. In darkness and shadow we do not find only ugliness and despair. The darkness has its own all encompassing beauty- its own ability to steal the breath and capture the heart. And this is what I am finding as I read First Blood by Aleksandr Voinov. The story is written with a stark grace that acknowledges that the world is not full of only gentle spirits, and that love is not only for the pure of heart, the sun dwellers, the gentle people.
Robert Frost once said that the author is entitled to all the meaning that the reader finds in his work, and so whether AV meant it or not is irrelevant, this is what I have seen as I read. Within a plot that is rife with action and violence, lies a story of integrity, trust, love, and self knowledge.
In Clean Slate, the first book in the series, Chris was more an accessory to the love between Andrei and John. He was loved, he loved, but they were in love. Their brand of love is not for Chris...he actually doesn't even seem to understand their actions and motivations...with Nikita he has found his match. He understands Nikita and is attached to him on level that he never shows with John and Andrei.
Whether your interests lie in fast paced adventure or romance, this book offers a startling look into the hearts of men of a different stamp....
Makes me think about my daily dose of rush hour driving: "With all their aggressive driving, Germans were still terribly efficient and not nearly as risky or haphazard as the Brits. While there was always a palpable sense of threat and hostility on German streets, it never seemed personal, unlike Italy, and a far cry from the insecure, terrified driving of the Brits."
55% Chris is in his hotel room. His dubious lover Nikita uses a passkey and comes in. Chris don't know that Nikita is a good guy. Andrei, who Nikita might hold a killing contract on, comes in.
First Blood is the second of a series, Clean Slate is the first. "Clean Slate" was a harder read than normal for me. I kept putting it down and then picking it back up. This is due to the relationships between Chris, John and Andrei. "First Blood" second book in the series affected me the same way. For some reason once Nikita was fully introduced as a major character I was ok and ended up loving it. Maybe it was the menage aspect that I didn't like and once Chris realized he fell for Nikita I relaxed. It then became a great spy novel with an M/M bent.
Wow, I loved this book even though it was a bit close to my comfort zone in terms of violence, moral ambiguity and BDSM. The exploration by Chris and Nikyta of their sexual boundaries and the strong sexual tension throughout the book made it a great read. Enough solid plot and action to keep it working for me on all levels. For two such strong alpha male characters the touches of vulnerability and the shifts in the balance of power between the two was beautifully portrayed. How I hope there will be a third book. I really want to see where these two go in their relationship.
A great read! I've been looking forward to this one since I read Clean Slate, and I wasn't disappointed. Aleks never fails to sucks me in no matter what the subject matter—he's far too crafty with words for his own good—and Ms. Sheridan is swiftly becoming a favorite as well. As much as I enjoyed the threesome dynamic in Clean Slate, I loved watching Chris find someone (as well as something) he needed. Despite my intentions to draw out the pleasure, I devoured the book in a day.
I liked this more than the 1st book in the series: Chris was my favorite character (always had a thing for the cocky ones)and I wasn't satisfied by the end of Clean Slate since I though he was kind of wasted in a threesome with John and Andrei.
Chris and Nikita are, in my humble opinion, definitively a better pair: their interactions were explosive and, at the same time, there was an aftertaste of sweetness that made them even hotter together!
I absolutely LOVED this book. It was gripping from the beginning to the end. The plot was fantastic. The two main characters, Chris and Nikita, play a game of sexual dominance/submission with a violent edge throughout the story. The sex scenes are scorching hot. My only complaint is the book ended, leaving me wanting more.
First Blood is a sequel to Clean Slate and I really loved this one. Chris finds his counterpart in Nikita and the two difficult men together are just... explosive. The hot Russian holding a knife brings Vadim to mind. Nikita must be his sibling... or cousin. :D
I would definitely read another Chris and Nikita story.
Although at first I was disappointed that Chris seemed to have slipped back into his old ways, once I saw the chemistry he had with Nikita and the way things were with John and Andrei, I really liked the way the book went. I rather liked the difficult-ness of characters living in the world of spy and counter-spy.
Compelling. I love the way the characters each had boundaries to break down. They both had to surrender to the other in a way they never had before. The building of trust between them was fraught and not entirely inevitable, keeping the tension high right to the end.
Two cool Russians, a cheerful American, and an intelligent Chinese, characters are very attractive. Especially Chris! A good story. So romantic and my heart throbbed. I would like to re-read thoroughly.
I hoped plot would pull me more when I read the review but it was opposite. Main character Chris is written as saint Samaritan or lets say idiot and other main character Nikita is written the way that I would wish him to get a bullet in his head from the starting point. So very disappointed book.
This was good! So much better than book 1 (not that book 1 was bad, because it wasn't). Good plot & OMG, Nikita was fierce! I would definitely read another Chris & Nikita story. (so hot!)
I really did enjoy the beginning relationship between Nikita and Chris - those first sex scenes were hot. Plus this book also has a plot, which balanced nicely with the sex.
