Eleven years ago Jesse Perkins, a poor kid with an attitude, was jailed for a crime he didn't commit. When he was cleared he left town to prove himself and did make a success. Now he is back to open a plant for his company in his home town. Ellie Cooper, his one young supporter in the old days, is now the local vet. Kathleen, prom queen was Jesse's girl, secretly, back then, but not willing to stand by him.
Now Kathleen is married to the son of one of the town leaders. Jesse plans to put the past behind and join the town leaders as associates but that is not what happens. He gets to know Ellie as an adult and a growing relationship develops, but the old wounds fester and the only way to clear the air is to solve the old crime. As facts come to the surface many lives are jeopardized and true natures become known. I found this a very satisfying old series romance.
