Shirlee Elaine was born 9 August 1941 in San Jose, California, USA. She was the first daughter of a career naval officer, later she had two sisters and three brothers, they raised traveling the world. She went to the institute in Kentri, Morocco, after which she returned to California and she went to Burbank Bussines College of Santa Rosa, where she received a certificate in 1962.

Shirlee married with Howard Busbee in June 22, 1963. Now, they live in hills of California, where they raise for pleasure Standard Schnauzers, Standardbred horses, and other many animals.

She has worked as a receptionist for the Marin County Title and Abstract Co., as plant supervisor for Fairfield Title Co., and as secretary and drafting technician for the County Parks Department of Fairfield, California, where she met her life-long friend and mentor Rosemary Rogers. Published since 1977, Shirlee Busbee is the proud author of over 18 novels, including seven New York Times bestsellers. This is a good series. The paranormal slant in the Victorian-ish era romance adds quite a bit of interest.

I actually enjoyed "Seduction Becomes Her" by Shirlee Busbee. I'm not sure why I'm so surprised as I read "Scandal Becomes Her" and enjoyed that one too. Ms Busbee's books are historicals that contain a bit of the supernatural. In this book, it was ghosts, both evil and good, and the return of a past villain. I didn't have a hard time figuring out the villain (since he was also in her last book), but there was another mystery that wasn't too hard to figure out once the clues were all presented. The paranormal elements take a more active role in her books and I don't mind that at all. I'm not sure I can explain it, but her books have a different 'feel' than most historicals. I've tried to pinpoint why and maybe someone else can enlighten me, but I do enjoy them so I'm not gonna let it worry me!!

The hero in this book is Charles who we met in her last book. Charles isn't a bad guy...but he's no angel either. He's mostly recovered from the events of the last book where his evil stepmother (sorry all you good stepmothers out there) and psychotic murderer of a half-brother were killed...maybe. His evil half-brother fell down into a cavern under a dungeon after being shot twice, but his body was never found, even after a rigorous search. Charles has done all he can to come to grips and go on with his life but he feels unsettled. He decides to check in on some of his half-brother's old pals and is disturbed when one of them writes him with news of two women's mutilated bodies. Charles decides to go investigate himself. While visiting this erstwhile 'friend', he's called upon to rescue a woman trapped by a rockslide in an oceanside cave. In the course of the rescue, they become trapped for two nights. Of course this results in an engagement to save her name. Charles quickly realizes that this woman, Daphne, is exactly what he would have chosen...he's not at all disturbed by the thought of marrying her. In fact, he wishes his wedding night would hurry up and get here!!

Daphne has given up all hope of marrying. She has taken care of her younger brother and sister since the death of their parents and truly feels more like a mother than a sister to the two of them. When her brother comes into a surprising inheritance, the three of them gleefully flee their meager existence in London for Cornwall. When his inheritance turns out to be more than just 'comfortable', Daphne is thrilled for her siblings and begins to dream of ways to have them 'accepted' into London society. While exploring the inheritance, she becomes trapped by a landslide in a cave. Her rescuer is very handsome, but also very commanding. It's been quite a while since anyone has commanded Daphne and she's not at all happy about it. Then again, the strange feelings he engenders in her have her very confused.

I probably gave away alot of the plot, but really that's just the first bit. There's plenty more. Mysterious ghost sightings, secret passageways, villainous relatives, really hot sex, a local witch, and a displaced inheritor spice up the plot of this interesting novel. I'll be looking for her next release (no word as yet on title or date) which will hopefully continue with the third heroes story!

It was ok, hence the two stars. It read very similarly to the first book in the series, so I wasn't impressed. I did however enjoyed Charles. Just like Julian from the first book, he betrothed himself out of honor. I gave an "awww" when he admitted that he had already decided to marry her because there was something special about her. I can not get enough of men who know what they want and will do what is needed to obtain it!
There is mystery and paranormal activity amidst the romance story. Old characters return and new ones are introduced. The spirit, no pun intended, continues. And now I will read the next one in the series!

This is one of those good juicy (not too intellectual!) romance-gothic thrillers that one can sink into within a couple of pages! Tales of a mysteriously vanished serial killer! Ghostly apparitions! A damsel in distress caught in a Cinderella setting! The hero comes to the rescue! Etc... Too much fun, indeed.

Not sure what the title refers to, as the heroine is not bent on seduction at all, she seems rather unaware of her charms until she gets unwilling shackled to the hero.

A great way to pass the time, as all ends well.

I like the story and the character's although I thought that Charles was a much wittier character in the first book. Also, since I read this almost back to back with the first book I noticed the rhythm of the story-line was very similar to the first book. It will be interesting to see if book three follows a similar flow. Still very good characters with passion.

Daphne meets Charles after she gets her ankle stuck in rocks in a seaside cave. He and she are trapped together so he marries her. Then, they confront a ghost mystery and worries surroudnign Charles' missing serial killer brother Raoul. A ghost of a long dead and misused woeman, Katherine, saves Daphne from raoul's murder of her.

Got this book from "monito/monita" last December 2013.
Then last Wednesday, I decided to read this to ease my boredom only to find out that this novel is an awesome novel. The hero/heroine showed us the real meaning of love.
I love how Charles adore Daphne.
I love the mystery line of this novel.
All I want to say actually is I really love this novel.

Busbee writes great men!! These are really fun to read. Although similar in more than one way to the first in this series this was equally good and Charles Weston proved himself to be as wonderful as his cousin Julian was in the previous book. The supernatural elements make it even more fun and gave these newlyweds a purpose other than their active evenings.

I couldn’t even get through the first chapter. The first chapter consisted of the hero reminiscing about killing, murdering, fighting a duel, suicide, his evil step brother, his horrible, step mother….It went on and on. Too much violence for me, I quit reading it.

Romanze vermischt mit Krimi – fesselnd, atemberaubend und emotionsgeladen

Daphne, die Älteste unter den Geschwistern, versucht die Familie durchzubringen, nachdem ihre Eltern gestorben sind. Als ein Brief sie erreicht, ändert sich alles. Denn ihr Bruder erbt ein Vermögen mitsamt Landsitz. Sie lassen London hinter sich und beginnen ihr neues Leben. Charles, der aus persönlichen Gründen nach Cornwall reist, begegnet auf einem Spaziergang Daphne, die ihn mit ihrer direkten Art auf Anhieb in den Bann zieht. Als nach einem Felssturz beide in einer Höhle eingesperrt werden, handelt er ehrenhaft und bietet ihr an, sie zu heiraten. An die Zukunft ihrer Geschwister denkend, nimmt sie den Heiratsantrag an, ohne zu ahnen, welch aufrichtige Gefühle er bereits für sie hegt. Doch Charles Geheimnis und andere Missverständnisse zwischen den Beiden sorgen für reichlich Wirrungen und überraschende Wendungen.

Als ich mich dazu entschieden habe, diese Geschichte zu lesen, ohne den Vorgängerband zu kennen, habe ich mit vielem gerechnet, aber nicht mit einem Krimihandlungsstrang. Es war eine positive Überraschung, die mich unter anderem an die Buchseiten gefesselt hat. Aber auch die Figuren konnten mich von sich überzeugen. Sind sie doch vielschichtig angelegt worden, mit Ecken und Kanten, Geheimnissen und Geistern aus der Vergangenheit, die zu überwinden galten. Das Handeln und die Denkweise der einzelnen Charaktere wirkte stets nachvollziehbar und authentisch. Das Knistern zwischen den beiden Hauptprotagonisten war spür- und greifbar, was auch zu erotischen Szenen geführt hat. Ich hatte Spass daran, die Entwicklung der Romanze zu verfolgen und wie die Figuren an den Geschehnissen gewachsen sind, bis sie schlussendlich zusammengefunden haben.

Wie es zu einer guten Geschichte gehört, kommen Wirrungen und unvorhersehbare Wendungen nicht zu kurz und sorgen damit für eine schöne Portion Spannung, haben mich als Leser auch mitraten und mitfiebern lassen. Der Humor schwingt immer an der rechten Stelle mit, entlockte mir oft ein Lächeln. Aber damit nicht genug, denn die Geschichte wurde zusätzlich mit etwas Übersinnlichem ergänzt, das stark mit der Krimihandlung zusammenhängt und den schon recht hohen Spannungsbogen an sich mit weiterem Nervenkitzel und Rätselraten untermalt hat.


Die wilde, raue, aber auch romantische Landschaft von Cornwall erwachte vor meinem inneren Auge zum Leben. Denn der einnehmende, bildhafte Schreibstil hat mich das Abenteuer miterleben, mitfühlen und folgedessen zahlreiche Emotionen durchleben lassen - von Wut, Angst, Trauer, Verzweiflung, Freude, wärmendes Glücksgefühl, Schmetterlinge im Bauch bis hin zu Berauscht hatte ich alles durch. Am Ende fühlte ich mich zufrieden und gut unterhalten. Obwohl immer wieder etwas aus dem Vorgängerband eine Rolle gespielt hat, hatte ich nie das Gefühl überfordert zu sein oder, dass mir wichtige Informationen fehlen würden, da die Eckpunkte und wichtige Ereignisse aus Band 1 gut in die Geschichte eingefädelt worden sind.


Fazit:

Ich kann sagen, dass ich bisher noch keinen vergleichbaren Regency-Roman gelesen habe. Die Idee der Vermischung von Krimi- und Historiegenre mit Übernatürlichem ist originell und spannend umgesetzt worden. Für mich war das Buch ein absolutes Lesevergnügen. Ich empfehle es gerne weiter. Wenn dich reichlich Action, Wirrungen, eine authentische Romanze und Nervenkitzel ansprechen, die dich durch vielerlei Emotionen führen werden, dann pack hier zu und lies diesen Roman. Du wirst ihn lieben.

Darum geht es:
Nachdem ihre Eltern verstorben sind, sorgt Daphne Beaumont für ihre zwei jüngeren Geschwister. Als ihr Bruder unerwartet erbt, können sie ihre Geldsorgen vergessen und London in Richtung Cornwall verlassen. Dort trifft Daphne auf Charles Weston, den sie nach einer unfreiwillig gemeinsam verbrachten Nacht plötzlich heiraten muss.

Meine Bewertung:
Der erste Satz zeigt schon, dass es mindestens etwas Spannung in diesem Buch geben wird: "Glaubst du, er ist noch am Leben?" Kurz darauf erfährt man von einem Halbbruder, der ein Monster war, und dessen Leiche nie gefunden wurde.

Sein Halbbruder, Charles Weston, die Hauptfigur in diesem Buch, wird geplagt von Erinnerungen, nachdem er seine eigene Stiefmutter erschossen hat. Er ist ein Draufgänger, hochgewachsen und muskulös, mit schwarzen Haaren und grünen Augen, der weder an Heirat noch an eigene Kinder denkt - bis er Daphne kennenlernt.

Daphne, eine vernünftige, mit 28 Jahren nicht mehr ganz so junge unverheiratete Frau, ist Familienoberhaupt und Vormund ihrer zwei jüngeren Geschwister nachdem beide Eltern verstorben sind. Als ihr Bruder Adrian erbt, verhält sie sich mehr wie die Mutter als eine ältere Schwester, die auch an die eigene Zukunft denken muss. Entsprechend wenig Handlungsbedarf sieht sie, nachdem sie nach einem Unfall unfreiwillig eine Nacht allein mit Charles in einer Höhle verbringen muss. Die Erwartung der Gesellschaft ist jedoch eine ganz andere und um den Ruf der Familie zu retten, geht sie auf Charles Antrag ein. Aber kann sie ihm auch von den unheimlichen Begebenheiten im neu ererbten Anwesen berichten oder wird er sie dann für verrückt halten?

Abwechslungsreiche Geschichte, die mit ein bisschen Geistern, verborgenen Türen und Mord auftrumpft. Unsympathisch, aber ggf. der damaligen Zeit geschuldet, ist es als Charles Daphne am Anfang die ganze Zeit als "alte Jungfer" bezeichnet (was heutzutage ja doch eher eine beleidigende Konnotation hat) und auch die nicht unerwarteten Streitereien wegen dem (noch) fehlenden Vertrauen ziehen sich ein wenig.

Fazit:
Eine solide Liebesgeschichte, mit etwas Spannung und übernatürlichen Elementen

Random thoughts:

- Adrian was pretty much the best thing about this whole story. His constant bickering with April made even her completely flat character sound interesting at times.

- Charles is a misogynistic asshole (like all of Ms Busbee’s male heroes/characters, it seems), and I failed to see anything charming about him or his behaviour. He was actually more interesting in his episodic appearances in the first book, as there was some (unjustified) mystery around his motivations there.

- Daphne, compared to the constantly tantrum throwing Nell from the first book, had a functioning brain and more of a spine, but was ultimately a disappointing heroine, starting with how she suddenly stopped giving a fig about her underage brother, once she had decided she was in love with her husband. It has to be one or the other? Women aren’t able to care equally about several people in their lives?

- So, we are to believe that this 28 year old woman, who is sexually inexperienced (is there any other kind of heroine in these books?), and had barely kissed someone in the past, has no problem with a man groping her between her legs or exposing and touching her breasts? A man, who is still a stranger, and to whom she isn’t yet married? And all of that in the middle of someone’s office or library, where anyone can walk in at any minute? Okay…

- The author’s favourite pattern of introducing a conflict between the hero and heroine based on some misunderstanding, where both of them refuse to say what’s bothering them and keep making wrong assumptions, deepening the rift, until something random (usually someone else making an observation) triggers a passionate confession - well, that pattern was extremely annoying the first time around. And it looks like Ms Busbee keeps repeating it in each book…

- The “mystery” part with Raoul was idiotic, possibly even more so than in the first book.

- The ghost story was wrapped up in one or two pages at the end, more as an afterthought.

- When Charles commented on 16th century morals compared to their 19th century ones by saying “They weren’t as civilized as we are”, I burst out laughing.

„Ein ehrenwerter Schurke“ von Shirlee Busbee ist der zweite Band ihrer Regency Beautys Reihe, der zwar eine neue abgeschlossene Lovestory erzählt, aber gleichzeitig den spannenden Crime-Plot aus dem ersten Band fortführt.
Daphne Beaumont ist die älteste der drei Beaumont-Geschwister und hat nach dem Tod ihrer Eltern die Verantwortung für ihren Bruder Aiden und ihre Schwester Alice übernommen. Eine unerwartete Erbschaft eines entfernten Verwandten führt die drei nach Cornwall, wo ein herrschaftliches Anwesen ihr neues Zuhause wird. Bei einer Erkundung einer Höhle an der Küste hat Daphne einen Unfall und wird von Charles Weston gerettet. Leider müssen beide nach einem Felssturz über Nacht in der Höhle ausharren und so bleibt nur eine Heirat, um den unvermeidlichen Skandal zu verhindern. Während Charles über die Situation unerwartet erfreut ist, muss er seine widerspenstige Braut erst noch überzeugen.

Mir hat schon der erste Band richtig gut gefallen, denn der Mix aus Regency-Romance und Crime ist der Autorin absolut gelungen. Obwohl der Vorgänger grundsätzlich abgeschlossen war, blieben einige Fragen offen, die nun in der Fortsetzung alle beantwortet werden. Wieder wird es ziemlich spannend und diesmal bekommt der übersinnliche Mystery-Faktor noch mehr Gewicht als im Vorgängerband.
Ich mochte Charles und seinen facettenreichen und interessanten Charakter schon im ersten Teil und es hat mich sehr gefreut, dass er nun sein Glück finden darf. Daphne ist genau die richtige Frau für ihn, denn sie gibt ihm ausreichend Kontra und begegnet ihm auf Augenhöhe. Die Schlagabtausche der beiden sind sehr amüsant und langweilig wird es bei ihnen wohl nie werden.
Der Schreibstil liest sich leicht und flüssig und Shirlee Busbee hat es in einigen Szenen geschafft, dass ich echt Gänsehaut hatte. Das schaurige Setting ist auf jeden Fall überzeugend und auch bei Charles und Daphne springt der Funke ganz klar über.

Mein Fazit:
Die fesselnde Story konnte mich von Anfang bis Ende mitreißen und ich vergebe sehr gern eine Leseempfehlung!

Erster Satz:
„Glaubst du, er ist noch am Leben?“, fragte Charles und starrte dabei in die lodernden Flammen im Kamin.

Meine Meinung:
Einen interessanten Mix aus Mystery, Thrill und historischem Liebesroman präsentiert uns die Autorin Shirlee Busbee in „Ein ehrenwerter Schurke“ und würzt zusätzlich den 2. Band der Regency-Beauties-Reihe mit einem alten Familiengeheimnis. Es handelt sich hier um eine Neuauflage, die 2009 unter dem Titel „Woge der Begierde“ erschienen ist.

Es ist nicht unbedingt notwendig, den Vorgängerband zu kennen, alles Wichtige wird hier nochmal erläutert. Jedoch erhöht es das Lesevergnügen, denn Ereignisse aus dem 1. Teil werden wieder aufgegriffen und weitererzählt, so dass auch für einige Spannung gesorgt wurde. Zusätzlich passt die übersinnliche Komponente, die ein altes Familiengeheimnis beinhaltet, meiner Meinung nach gut zur Handlung.

Der Protagonist Charles Weston, den man bereits kennenlernen durfte, zeigt sich nun von einer ganz anderen Seite und kann auch ein wahrer Gentleman sein. Denn als er in einen kompromittierenden Vorfall mit Daphne verwickelt wird, zögert er nicht lange und bietet ihr die Ehe an. Auch wenn dies einen Skandal verhindern würde, sorgt Daphne sich um die Zukunft ihrer Geschwister, deren Vormund sie ist. Zudem befürchten beide, dass ihre Liebe nicht erwidert wird. Als jedoch Charles Vergangenheit sie einholt, steht wesentlich mehr auf dem Spiel.

Mir gefiel die Mischung aus übersinnlichen, spannenden und historischen Elementen wirklich sehr gut. Schön fand ich auch, dass die Hauptcharaktere aus dem 1. Band eine größere Nebenrolle spielen. Rundum ein gelungenes Buch, das Lust auf den nächsten Teil der Reihe und dessen Hauptcharakter, den man ebenfalls bereits kennengelernt hat, macht.

Fazit:
„Ein ehrenwerter Schurke“ überzeugt nicht nur mit einer Mischung aus historischem Liebesroman, übersinnlichen Elementen und einem alten Familiengeheimnis, sondern wartet auch mit spannenden Momenten auf. Es handelt sich hier um eine Neuauflage.

I really liked Charles as a hero; capable, intelligent, strong family ties, he wasn't one who revealed his hand. And Daphne was a great counterpart, with her quick wit, scrappy personality, and her parental role with her siblings. They had great chemistry and I felt as a reader I could see both the physical and emotional relationships build. That said, there are definitely some downsides to the story.

What I didn't like:

(1) We didn't get to see a lot of their interplay when they were stuck in the cave. They were together for two days, and it's summed up in less than a page. That would have been a great opportunity for some snarky comments, some snuggling, and even a kiss or two. (2) Daphne comes across (most of the time) as intelligent and capable, but she has moments that just seem out of character, and it gets a bit whiny. (3) the kissing/sex scenes weren't the worst I've read, but not the best either. It felt a bit like a Regence romance author's attempt at writing a sexy scene. (4) Again - just like the first book, the melodrama and ghostly presence. This story didn't need that; I'm not against paranormal (in fact it's a favorite genre of mine), I just didn't feel like this added anything to the story.

What I liked:

(1) Charles shows a lot of tact and thoughtfulness in planning how they will live their lives, and it is clear he has a lot of respect for Daphne's role as parent. He understands her desire to see her siblings both happily settled, but he wants them to be a part of his life because he genuinely begins to care for them. (2)I loved seeing Julian and Nell's HEA, and that the story took place two years later. I really think that Charles needed the time to grow up a bit more. (3) The secondary characters really make the story; Adrian and April weren't whiny and spoiled siblings. They were generally sunny people who meant well. The good and bad characters all added depth.

Und Charles erweist sich als Ehrenmann, als er eine erotisch geladene Situation kurz vor der Hochzeit nicht ausnutzt und bis zurEheschließung warten wollte.Dann findet die Hochzeit statt und beide sprechen sich aus und verlieben sich immer mehr.Eine sehr schön geschriebene Geschichte bestehend aus einem Liebesroman verbunden mit einem Krimi, eine gelungene Kombination!Absolute Leseempfehlung!

I was worried before I started this book that I wouldn't like it because of the ghosts, but the author made it work perfectly. I was fascinated by all the tunnels and hidden passages. I could imagine wondering around in them myself.

I love the secondary characters as much as the main characters in this book and greatly enjoyed this book.

I listened to this book on audible and the narrator did an excellent job telling this story. I already downloaded the next book in the series and I can't wait to get started!

I think this book is best read/listened to in order for maximum enjoyment, however if you don't want to or can't you won't be lost.
