Caitlín Matthews is a writer, singer and teacher whose ground-breaking work has introduced many to the riches of our western spiritual heritage.

She is acknowledged as a world authority on Celtic Wisdom, the Western Mysteries and the ancestral traditions of Britain and Europe. She is the author of over 50 books including Sophia: Goddess of Wisdom, a study of Divine Feminine in Gnostic, Jewish and Christian thought and King Arthur’s Raid on the Underworld, a new translation and study of the Welsh poet Taliesin’s extraordinary poem, itself a major cross-roads of British mythology.

Caitlín was trained in the esoteric mystery traditions through the schools founded by Dion Fortune, Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki and Gareth Knight. Her shamanic vocation emerged early in her ability to sing between the worlds and to embody spirits. She has worked in many of the western traditions with companions upon the path including R.J.Stewart. Like him, she teaches the many strands of the ancestral European traditions. She specializes in teaching traditional European spirit-consultation oracles where the diviner draws directly upon the spirits of nature for answers and in the use of the voice to sound the unseen. Caitlín has been instrumental in revealing the ancestral heritage of the Western traditions through practical exploration of the mysteries as well as through scholarly research. Her teachings are couched in a firm historical and linguistic framework, with respect to the original context of the teachings, but never loses sight of the living traditions of these teachings which can be explored through direct application to their spiritual sources.

Trained as an actress, Caitlín is in demand as a storyteller and singer. She appears frequently on international radio and television, and was the song-writer and Pictish language originator for the Jerry Bruckheimer film King Arthur. With John Matthews, her partner, who was historical consultant on the film, she shared in the 2004 BAFTA award given to Film Education for the best educational CD Rom: this project introduced school-children to the life and times of King Arthur. She and John are both concerned with the oral nature of storytelling and its ability to communicate the myth at a much deeper level than of the commercial booktrade. This is apparent in their forthcoming project, The Story Box. For Caitlín, her books are merely the tip of a much bigger oral iceberg which is her teaching.

With her partner, John Matthews, and with Felicity Wombwell , she is co-founder of The Foundation for Inspirational and Oracular Studies, which is dedicated to the sacred arts that are not written down. Their FíOS shamanic training programme teaches students the healing arts as well as hosting masterclasses with exemplars of living sacred traditions. Caitlín has a shamanic practice in Oxford dedicated to addressing soul sickness and ancestral fragmentation, as well as helping clients find vocational and spiritual direction. Her soul-singing and embodiment uniquely bring the ancient healing traditions to everyday life.

Caitlín’s other books include Singing the Soul Back Home, Mabon and the Guardians of Celtic Britain, The Psychic Protection Handbook, and Celtic Devotional. She is co-author, with John Matthews, of the Encyclopedia of Celtic Wisdom and Encyclopaedia of Celtic Myth and Legend. Her books have been translated into more than nineteen languages from Brazil to Japan.

The author lives in Oxford with her husband and son in a kind of book-cave or library, whichever you will. They share their home with a white cat and a black cat.

I admit I am a library junkie and rarely find anything on the market in the area of Paganiam, magic, metaphysics and the like that has a drop of new, useful information in it. But when I read this book, with its very detailed and yet simple practices for psychic street smarts, including everything from soul hygeine and protection, I immediately bought it.

As someone who has spent my whole life learning to shut down my empathy and psychic awareness, I wish I had this book at age 7 or 13.

There is a nice blend of core shamanism in the book as well, but written in a much more assessable way for people who haven't been formally trained in soul retrieval.

I highly suggest doing the whole book slowly and honestly and let it work its magic on your life. If everyone was aware of their own power stealing and leakage and the like, we'd be in a much saner society.

As I stress to my clients, empowerment is the key to life, not being a victim, and this is on top of my reading list for people with boundary issues. Even a Christian Priest I know loves this book.

“The Psychic Protection Handbook – Powerful Protection For Uncertain Times” is a 368-page guidebook for self-protection. Why do we need self-protection? Because life throws us a lot of curves, and we need to be able to handle them. Anything or anyone that takes us off our balance can become a major issue in our life if we allow it to.

In discussing how to use this book, Matthews has gifted the reader with several different situations and the chapter that is most applicable to them. Examples include: always feeling vulnerable (Chapter 3), stuck and unable to change (Chapter 7), and people-skills poor (Chapter 9).

There is also a listing of positive blueprints to keep in mind as you read this book. Examples include: You are never helpless, unloved, or alone. Say “no” if persuasion or coercion is being used against you. You are a unique human being with a distinct role to play in the universe.

In her introduction, Matthews talks about being unprepared for psychic attacks. She also notes that what is termed psychic attacks are actually what she terms psychic disruption: disturbance of the soul.

The Psychic Protection Handbook is meant to be used for daily soul maintenance in the face of psychic risk. The whole point of this book is to look at the cause and effect of psychic disturbance, discern truth from lies, and know who we are. Throughout the book are short lists of items to consider under each topic, which I found to be very helpful.

Chapters in this book include finding spiritual protectors, streetwise psychic protection, the boundaries of power and energy, soul-care, uninvited guests, mind games, power of the word, people problems, home and environment, family and ancestors, relationships, the work of our hands, the world of spirit, and the unquiet dead.

At the back of the book is a bibliography, a list of resources, and an index. This book is a resource, one that can be turned to at any time the reader is having an issue. Matthews recommends reading the first seven chapters before attempting to work with this book.

The book is written in everyday language to that anyone of any background can use it. Even when you might think, “Oh, this stuff is very basic. I am beyond this.” You aren’t. Psychic protection has rules to live by – obey them, and you will be fine. The advice, exercises, and rituals in this book are down-to-earth and easy to use. Create the safe, positive life that you want to live on a daily basis.

Stressful: too much centered on relationships, power play and not the best sides of human interactions; views in some parts are downright offensive. Good way to undermine confidence of an already stressed person, all the dirt on the earth for you to analyse - some would prefer to stay away to save a sanity. Or The PSYCHIC PROTECTION Handbook, Curse Cancelling Ritual: cancelling the curse that YOU sent; not helping.

There is some information on protection in a shamanic way, with the help of your Guardian Advocate.

Annoying examples and long lists of questions without answers, all possible human problems - all were put there. Stripped to the helping part, maybe, it could be useful.

I think I need to read this book again and maybe again. It's not the kind of book you read from cover to cover. You got to practice the exercises to appreciate what's going on. I can't remember all the steps now. It was interesting and useful although I didn't expect it to turn out like this. The writer is a shamanic practitioner. Something new to me. I was expecting something simple like just Guardian angels and yoga meditation and prayer. Sometimes we just go by instincts and know it when a person has bad energy..... This book covers so much more than that. Very different in fact. I will probably explore more again when I read this book again.

Nothing fluffy or new-age-y about this book. It's grounded, practical, and full of commonsense advice. Very detailed instructions. While reading it I felt like a novice being guided by a stern teacher, but that's just the author's personality.
