Then Inuyasha takes on another of Naraku's evil offspring, a demon that inhabits the very sword his half brother Sesshomaru wields. Rumiko Takahashi (高橋留美子) was born in Niigata, Japan. She is not only one of the richest women in Japan but also one of the top paid manga artists. She is also the most successful female comic artist in history. She has been writing manga non-stop for 31 years.

Rumiko Takahashi is one of the wealthiest women in Japan. The manga she creates (and its anime adaptations) are very popular in the United States and Europe where they have been released as both manga and anime in English translation. Her works are relatively famous worldwide, and many of her series were some of the forerunners of early English language manga to be released in the nineties. Takahashi is also the best selling female comics artist in history; well over 100 million copies of her various works have been sold.

Though she was said to occasionally doodle in the margins of her papers while attending Niigata Chūō High School, Takahashi's interest in manga did not come until later. During her college years, she enrolled in Gekiga Sonjuku, a manga school founded by Kazuo Koike, mangaka of Crying Freeman and Lone Wolf and Cub. Under his guidance Rumiko Takahashi began to publish her first doujinshi creations in 1975, such as Bye-Bye Road and Star of Futile Dust. Kozue Koike often urged his students to create well-thought out, interesting characters, and this influence would greatly impact Rumiko Takahashi's works throughout her career.

Career and major works:

Takahashi's professional career began in 1978. Her first published story was Those Selfish Aliens, a comedic science fiction story. During the same year, she published Time Warp Trouble, Shake Your Buddha, and the Golden Gods of Poverty in Shōnen Sunday, which would remain the home to most of her major works for the next twenty years. Later that year, Rumiko attempted her first full-length series, Urusei Yatsura. Though it had a rocky start due to publishing difficulties, Urusei Yatsura would become one of the most beloved anime and manga comedies in Japan.

In 1980, Rumiko Takahashi found her niche and began to publish with regularity. At this time she started her second major series, Maison Ikkoku, in Big Comic Spirits. Written for an older audience, Maison Ikkoku is often considered to be one of the all-time best romance manga. Takahashi managed to work on Maison Ikkoku on and off simultaneously with Urusei Yatsura. She concluded both series in 1987, with Urusei Yatsura ending at 34 volumes, and Maison Ikkoku being 15.

During the 1980s, Takahashi became a prolific writer of short story manga, which is surprising considering the massive lengths of most of her works. Her stories The Laughing Target, Maris the Chojo, and Fire Tripper all were adapted into original video animations (OVAs). In 1984, after the end of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, Takahashi took a different approach to storytelling and began the dark, macabre Mermaid Saga. This series of short segments was published sporadically until 1994, with the final story being Mermaid's Mask. Many fans contend that this work remains unfinished by Takahashi, since the final story does not end on a conclusive note.

Another short work left untouched is One-Pound Gospel, which, like Mermaid Saga, was published erratically. The last story to be drawn was published in 2001, however just recently she wrote one final chapter concluding the series

Later in 1987, Takahashi began her third major series, Ranma ½. Following the late 80s and early 90s trend of shōnen martial arts manga, Ranma ½ features a gender-bending twist. The series continued for nearly a decade until 1996, when it ended at 38 volumes. Ranma ½ is one of Rumiko Takahashi's most popular series with the Western world.

During the later half of the 1990s, Rumiko Takahashi continued with short stories and her installments of Mermaid Saga and One-Pound Gospel until beginning her fourth major work, InuYasha. While Ran

Another great volume, however not sure how I feel about the changes in Inuyasha and Kagome's relationship. I understand the reasoning on the characters' level, and to be fair this was written near 25 years ago, but it still seems a bit unhealthy on Kagome's part.

This is the frustrating point in the romance where Inuyasha chooses Kikyo and Kagome eventually rolls with it! She is ridiculously mature for her age and she does seem to come to the conclusion naturally but...it's frustrating how much slack Inuyasha gets from her. Although, I will say the anime (or at least the dub) does a poor job of translating Inuyasha's actual dilemma between them. The dub portrays it as him wanting both of them, whereas the manga translation makes the distinction that while Inuyasha is clearly in love with Kagome, he can't just ignore that Kikyo died to follow him. So, while I hate it, there is more nuance than what is portrayed in the anime and I can appreciate that context more as an adult.

I loved all the parts with the priestess Kikyo and the demon Naraku, but the large sections of bickering between Inuyasha and Kagome brought the rating down for me. They're like that one couple in a friend group that's always fighting and making things unpleasant and awkward for everyone else.

3.5 rounded up! Loved seeing Inuyasha go demon for the first time, but I did not like the drama between Kikyo, Inuyasha, and Kagome again. Kagome I guess is a better person than me because I would be PRESSED

This volume in particular really shows how different the Inuyasha/Kikyo and Inuyasha/Kagome pairings are, and why only one can truly bring joy.

Our story opens in the middle of a fight. Inuyasha is battling Kagura while Kagome fights to free her soul from Kanna's mirror. When Inuyasha tries the wind scar, Kanna reflects it back to him, nearly killing Inuyasha. Now it's Kagome's turn to save Inuyasha

Inuyasha can't stop thinking about what Naraku told him about Kikyo. When he notices Kikyo's soul skimmers he determines to go ask her. Unfortunately he runs into another of Naraku's demons, Goshinki. Goshinki can read minds and even worse, he breaks Inuyasha's blade!

On the brink of death we meet full demon Inuyasha for the first time. He's one scary dude, but Kagome won't let it overcome him.

Goshinki is definitely one of the creepier demons. His whole mind reading is disturbing, and he's just plain nasty.

Totosai, using one of Inuyasha's fangs, works on repairing Tetsusaiga. In the meantime, Sesshomaru comes across Goshinki's corpse and takes Goshinki's head to Kaijinbo, a disgraced sword maker. He commands Kaijinbo to make a sword from Goshinki. Kaijinbo makes the sword, but is overcome by it's evil and attacks Inuyasha.

Good think Sesshomaru can master the sword!

Koga and Inuyasha have their hands full with another pair of Naraku's demons, Juromaru and Kageromaru. Inuyasha is still having a hard time managing the new, heavier Tetsusaiga.

The end of this volume hurts my heart a little bit and makes me tear up. I always feel so deeply for Kagome. I admire her strength and courage. She knows Inuyasha will never give up Kikyo and even understands why he can't, but she doesn't want to leave him alone. She wants to help him.

One difference in the anime is that Kagome's mom talks to her about her feelings, but in the manga, Kagome figures things out on her own. I like the manga better.

I love reading the manga. It's so beautifully done. Rumiko Takahashi is so talented. I feel deeply for all the characters. I love their complex personalities, their humor, and how they care for one another. I love when they get after Inuyasha for how he treats Kagome and I love how jealous Inuyasha gets whenever Koga is around. It's all so delightful.

Excited to keep reading the manga. I know I'll be sad when it's over which is why I'm taking my time. :)

Four stars yet again. Broken record, much? Say what you will, but it perfectly exemplifies my emotional experience in this series so far (personally, I'm a bit wary of those who toss around five stars like they're going out of style). In a series this long, filled to the brim with mythos/action, you'd think characters would be in danger of becoming reactionary devices. But the author breaks up the fight scenes (of which there's no shortage) with sweet heart to hearts, reminding us of Inuyasha's vulnerability beneath the viciousness. I forgot that Inuyasha's purpose for going along with Kagome and company was to steal the Shikon to become a full fledged demon. But that motivation appears to be altering... unfortunately this isn't the case in his infatuation for Kikyou. Poor Kagome. Willing to put up with being second best (she's literally Kikyou's reincarnation), watching Inuyasha spill his soul to the one who continues to aid their greatest villain, just as she's admitted she's in love with him... What to do with a love that never comes to fruition, but keeps coming around anyway?

I was worried that there were too many boring cyclical fights in my soap opera manga but at the last few scenes balance has been restored, once again. 🙂‍↕️🖤

I’m a lot more bothered by Inuyasha’s toxic masculinity and his weird Kikyo obsession as an adult but I still love it lol

This volume of the InuYasha omnibus mostly focuses on Naraku as its major villain, although a portion of the first half of the book also features a battle between Inuyasha and Sesshomaru where they test out their new, upgraded weapons.

I enjoy the battling in this manga a bit more than I do with other shonen titles. Naraku's never-ending production of demon opponents for Inuyasha (and company, but we know who the main character is here, and the rest are always sidelined for all but a few panels each time) would probably have gotten tedious after yet another iteration in this omnibus. Right on time, Takahashi mixed things up with a sequence about the love triangle between Kagome, Inuyasha and Kikyo. More on that in a spoilered section below.

Minor quibbles:
- reading three volumes in a row, it's pretty evident that our main party can sustain basically an unlimited number of injuries. Inuyasha is battered to a standstill in one battle, and is punctured through the middle of his body by a scythe-like limb of an enemy in another battle not long afterwards. No big deal! He defeats the enemy, terrible wound and all, and is up and walking around not a day afterwards.
- I never have a very clear sense of scale of the feudal setting that we spend most of our time in. The main party is always traveling, but also never seems to be far away from the village that Kaede still lives in, or from Sesshomaru or Naraku. They're forever tripping over each other. :)

Anyhow, it's obvious that Kagome and Inuyasha won't be separated for long even after

This is a kind of emotional leveling-up for them in parallel with the battle manga stuff, is one way to put it. It could easily be seen as a situation drama with a shake-up and return to stability, but these two really do seem to have gained some new insights into their relationship. That sequence ends with their quietly holding hands and not bickering for once. A nice touch.

And then we're back to Naraku and a new spin on the situation with Kohaku. I'm interested in seeing why .

This is such a pretty interesting volume.

For one, Rumiko Takahashi keeps making hot villains and monsters omg how am I supposed to NOT root for them 😂 Kidding aside, the art and character design just slaps.

Another is that, apparently this is the volume that hurt me the most as a kid in the anime 😂 I'm talking about Inuyasha "choosing" Kikyo and Kagome accepting that she will always come second and staying beside Inuyasha's side even though it hurts her. Like that hurt me as a kid/teen. Unrequited love is so fcking painful, I don't wish it on anyone. Still I remember being a bit mad at Kagome for being a martyr and a masochist. But I was also mad at Inuyasha for not being straight with Kagome.

HOWEVER, reading the manga now, I keep wondering, does Inuyasha even love Kikyo? All his thoughts and POV seem like he feels immense guilt and moral responsibility or obligation to Kikyo so he needs to protect her, rather than needing to protect her because he loves her. And this guilt and responsibility definitely clouds his judgement. Apparently he would "go to hell" with Kikyo if that's what she wanted? That doesn't sound like love to me 😭 and yet, he also admits, he feels "calm and light" with Kagome. Tell me right now who is he really supposed to be with 😭😂

What happened to Kikyo and Inuyasha fifty years ago was tragic and disgusting (on part of Naraku manipulating the whole thing). But it's clear that this will affect their actions and decisions further, and create a truly complicated situation between Inuyasha, Kagome, and Kikyo.

Also demon Inuyasha finally appears in this volume! 😆 Human Inuyasha still has my heart tho. Oh and more Kohaku arc in the next one!

This is one of my favorite volumes.

We get Goshinki, who always creeped me out in the show, and we also get Juromaru and Kageromaru in here, who are two of the creepiest villains we get even for ho short of a time we get with them. This caused Koga to come into play again, team up with Inuyasha, and for everyone to show off more unique fighting moves.

We also get quite a few iconic points to the story in this volume, like Inuyasha first transforming into a full demon when faced with a near-death situation. AND THE TREES BEING THE SAME IN BOTH TIMES? I'M SICK-

Not to mention, the emotions were higher in this one, too. We get Inuyasha admitting to Kagome that he can't give Kikyo up, not only because he still has feeling for her, but also because she died trying to follow him to the underworld. Their whole situation hurts so bad because both Inuyasha and Kikyo had something precious ripped away from them so violently, and Kagome is just there feeling like the reincarnation of the woman that is loved by the man SHE loves. And Kagome's silent resolution really twisted the knife.

""I think I got dumped."" This made my stomach drop like you wouldn't believe all over again.

The whole thing is just so tragic, romantic, and messy that I eat it up every time. This volume also has some of the story's funnier moments, and the part where Sango met up with an amnesiac Kohaku made me cry. This was also darker, too. Not to mention, the panels in this one were absolutely iconic. Lastly, my man Koga makes an appearance in this volume, so of course I love it.

GIVE ME THE NEXT ONE NEOWW

4 stars.

Oh wow, I've really missed this series. I'm so happy my library added more volumes! I really think the manga is better than the anime (the dubbed one at least) because I feel like it goes deeper with the characters and the complexity of their emotions. I especially like how the manga handles the relationship between Inuyasha, Kagome, and Kikyo. In the dubbed anime, it was treated like a love triangle with Inuyasha not being able to choose, but here it is very clear that Inuyasha and Kagome are in love, but Inuyasha still cares and feels responsible for Kikyo and they have a deep relationship due to their past and connection. I don't know, I just really like how it's done.

I once again forgot about certain storylines, like the ogre and the Tetsaiga breaking and being repaired with Inuyasha's fang, them fighting Juromaru and Kageromaru, Naraku trying to kill Kikyo to defy his human heart that used to be Onigumo's, Inuyasha vowing to protect her, etc. I also forgot Kohaku was still alive and lost (?) his memory.

Have to thank tome topple , because I read all my giant manga books for the challenges. It is so hard for me to give less than 5 stars for this copy, because everything is right with it, from the art to the proper paper used (so easy to read), and I am not even going to talk about the plot.

At this moment this is the last volume I own , and honestly no idea when I will get the next ones (to expensive and apparently it will end completely different than the anime, and my heart can not deal with that at this moment). The story in this volume runs from the moment where Kykio gave the jewel to someone else, and it ends with Kagome finally admitting why she is so jealous and her heart hurts so much. Of course we get all the humor from the last volume, and all the great adventures and fight including some of the characters coming back to make our reading even more enjoyably and funny.

Again, I feel like the manga is more easily understood and the plot is clearer than the anime. I feel bad for Kagome with all the Kikyo stuff. : / don’t really understand why Inuyasha feels like he needs to die with her just because she died for him 50 years ago….(which, I’m not sold she died just for him- she also died so Naraku wouldn’t get the jewel….).

I know Inuyasha felt like he couldn’t ask Kagome to stay if he was also so loyal to Kikyo, but you’d think he could give a little more than just “I like you, but I will die for Kikyo by the end of this”. I feel like Kagome should just go home and let those guys figure it out. :/ you’re 15 Kagome!! You’ve got plenty of time to find another guy! This is the first one you’ve ever been (semi)serious with!

There’s a lot of everything that makes the series good in this volume. The romance drama was amped up, all the main antagonists added something important, and we get new developments for Inuyasha’s powers. The side characters were able to be a little more involved in the fights this time. I think this volume was good at adding hurdles so characters continue to grow. Sometimes near the end, the fight scenes were a bit harder than usual to follow because there were so many action lines and characters moving fast, but it still looked good. And I loved how the jealousy theme was explored from multiple angles. There’s more nuance to their situation than I think the anime portrayed, and I’m interested to see how Inuyasha’s mentality shifts over time because it’s not super healthy right now.

Just got it today and finished it today! I can honestly say I love the manga. There's things that I like WAY more about the manga than the anime. I like the differences in Inuyashas relationships with Kagome and Kikyo, I think they're much better in the manga and make more sense in the manga. I definitely appreciated Inuyasha and Kikyo dynamic in this one. Super good! If you haven't read this book yet. I 10/10 recommend. Whether you've seen the anime first it doesn't matter. There's mostly filler episodes in it but it still follows the manga pretty well! Enjoy!

The cover of this on the Viz app is so lame and unnecessary. Anyway :3
I love Kagome and Inuyasha’s relationship so much. It’s always been my favorite aspect of the story, honestly. One difference between this and the anime I was really surprised to see was how Kagome’s mom didn’t talk to her while she was upset and thinking about her relationship with Inuyasha. I always thought it was such a sweet moment between them, especially since we don’t see her mom that often and I’m really glad the anime added that :3

I feel like a lot of plot and romance progress is made in this installment, making it an enjoyable read.
Also can we talk about the hotness of Inuyasha’s demon form. I genuinely love it as much as his human form.
His protectiveness of Kagome is always the best. Also, their fight is heartbreaking but also just fantastic.
