Is there anyone more magical than Mommy? She can kiss a booboo and make it better. She can chase monsters away after a bad dream. And she can make a delicious cake appear—right out of thin air! This charming companion to MY DADDY IS A GIANT captures a toddler’s love and admiration for her mother with warmth and humor. It’s the perfect way to celebrate mothers—those everyday magicians who not only do it all but make it look so easy.
Carl Norac was born in Mons, Belgium, in 1960, the son of a writer and an actress. His early years were spent on a city housing estate, surrounded by playmates with whom he would act out Enid Blyton’s tales of adventure. His father later built a chalet and the family left the city to live in the middle of a forest. The importance of nature in his books comes from these years spent wandering among the trees. Every day after school, Carl went walking alone in the forest, making up stories. At the time, his parents owned a traveling puppet theatre and from the age of 12, Carl took part in their shows.
As a teenager, Carl wrote poems and received his first literary prize at the age of eighteen. This is when he started to travel throughout the world, mainly in Asia but also in Africa and the Americas. His children’s books are sometimes inspired by these travels that took him from sandy deserts to icy arctic wastes.
Carl Norac then worked in a number of different fields as a French teacher, a television scriptwriter, and a journalist before devoting himself completely to his passion—writing. In addition to poetry and plays, he has written about fifty children’s books and has received a lot of price ( He was also in the Honour List for The Andersen Prize in 2004 ) . Some of these, such as Les mots doux (I Love You So Much), have been translated more than twenty different languages with worldwide success. When he writes, the part he likes best is expressing the characters’ feelings. “A little bit of gentleness in a strange world.” These last years, he wrote some books directly in english, especially for Macmillan Chlidren’s Book ( with a american edition also by Clarion Books ). “My daddy is a giant” and “My mummy is magic”, the two first ones, are already translated in many languages. Carl Norac is the father of a little girl called Else.
My mommy is magic. Such a magical book. How mother's love in so many different ways. Highly recommended for mothers appreciation! Mommy is willing to go above and beyond always!

This book is a warm and luminously sentimental homage to a young girl’s mommy, beautifully accompanied with large, two-page pastel illustrations. It has a rich color palette with strong patterns, made all the more rich when paired with the tender affections the girl has for her mother. Mother is magical not because of any supernatural feats, but because the close and loving relationship make her extraordinary to her daughter. The characters hold hands, share secrets and Mommy kisses bruises to make them disappear. “When mommy tells me stories, everything else falls away. There’s only the two of us traveling through space and time.” This book is charming and artful and would be a delight for any parent to share with a young reader.
The book, My Mommy is Magic, is from the point of view of a daughter about her mother. This child speaks about how her mother had the ability to do magic. The mother's magic tricks consisted of planting flowers, chasing away monsters and baking birthday cakes. These little gestures that parents do for their children are very meaningful to the children. Carl Norac shows how parents should always make their children feel safe and loved. The mother in this story accomplishes little things that make her daughter admire her. She stays by her child during fearful times and cheerful ones. The mother is a role model for the child, as the child ends the story by stating that one day she will be magic too. This shows that parents are always leaving an impression on their children and that the best way to help nourish healthy children is by always being there for them.
Norac, Carl. My Mommy is Magic. Illus. Ingrid Godon. New York: Clarion Books, 2006. Print. Fiction, mother and child, magic. In My Mommy is Magic a girl shows us parts of her life, one of them being her magical mom. Her mom can do anything and the character is excited that one day she will be as magical as her mother is. I love how accurate the author is in portraying the love of a child for their mother. When children are young they think their parents are super heroes and they want to be their parents best friend. I think this would be the perfect book to use for a preschool class before Mother’s Day. This story could be used to open the lesson and have a discussion, then afterwards the students could do art projects for their mom.
My daughter really liked this book. It has simple text that is perfect for a toddler/pre-schooler's attention span. After a few readings together, she was able to read/tell it to herself. Mostly I liked it because it made me feel good about myself. Maybe all those mundane things I do everyday are "magic" to my child. At first glance I expected it to be a rhyming book but it isn't.
Doesn't everyone think their mommy is magic? I thought this was a sweet book that definitely made me think of tender moments with my own mom. I think this book would serve as a great read aloud before a writer's workshop. It could give students a chance to make a text to self connection and find a topic to write about.
A young girl explains that even though her mommy doesn't have a magic wand or hat, she is still magic. She can scare the monsters out of the closet, she kisses sores away and swims faster than dolphins.
A cute story from a daughter's perspective of her true feelings of her mommy. The illustrations are great. This book could be a lead in to Mother's Day activities.
This is a story of the magic qualities of a mothers--making hurts go away, celebrating birthdays, and reading stories. A celebration of Moms as well as reassurance for young children.
This is a cute story about a child who looks up to her mother and aspires to be just like her. This touching story about all the things a mother does for her daughter reveals the power of the bond between mother and child.
