Nightwitch

Rate this book
Alone in her bed, Carolina plays with her locket, a gift from her dad. She doesn't know he stole it from an evil woman in Trinidad. She hears a noise outside her window, looks up and sees red eyes staring in at her. Something horrible is outside. The Nightwitch is a soucouyant, Southern Caribbean cousin to the vampire and werewolf. She is a never aging shapeshifter borne of a mixture of Voodoo and European folklore. She lives forever because she wears a locket that contains a magic potion. Her locket has been stolen and she wants it back.

I don't know if everyone's copy was like this, but mine had a lot of spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. The editing was terrible in this regard. The writing was good enough for my standards, but the story was very lacking. For one, Priest explains that token fat kid is the fattest in the school despite a) Working in the morning (job), during school, and after work (housework) until his bed time at 10 pm. B) he can apparently roundhouse kick? C) Roundhouse kicked his bully, who became the school bully specifically because he was well adversed in fighting.

It just have trouble seeing how he'd be the fattest in the school all things considering, and also able to do feats like a successful full roundhouse kick despite being so cowardly he's never tried fighting.

It seems nitpicky, but I see this is with other characters. Like the author feels like he needs to follow some trope, but they can't be uncool enough to not do cool stuff.

And then of course there's the politics he threw in. The witch is just described as 'an old black woman with VERY black skin'. The women are smart and strong, but also weak and can't do anything on their own. SAing a child is evil, but just beating, starving, and overworking your 11 year old is like, not as bad.

Tl;dr This guy is a bigot, the book has poor editing, and his characters feel like a surface level understanding of good character development

The best word for this book is ‘odd’. It is about a witch who is targeting a little girl who has a locket that was stolen from the witch by her father. Er, just give it back??!!?? No, too easy, let’s all nearly get killed. The Father gets together with the girl’s teacher and is continually attacked by the witch (who cannot be killed) and the little girl and her friend figure out how to kill the witch. If you can read it without being plagued by the complete lack of logic then it is an entertaining read and vaguely amusing.

A really enjoyable read that is easy to follow and has a cute twist of romance while still being scary. I will be reading more books by this author.
