2/4 Cavalry Book 1: A New Hope

Rate this book
Based in the universe created by David Drake (with his permission) A New Hope chronicles, in anthology format the exploits of A Troop, 2/4 Cavalry. Designed to solely test out a new type (though of old ideas) of vehicles and tactics, the troopers are challenged by an insurgency campaign set in the mountainous Pollo Mountains. Based off of some experiences from past conflicts, to include my tour in Afghanistan.2-4 Cavalry Chronology2-4 A New Hope2-4 Operation Rockslide2-4 Another Day In Paradise2-4 Thunder Run2-4 Eagle Hammer2-4 Operation Morning Glory2-4 Rolling This is in no way connected to Star Wars, even though it has the same title as the first movie. IT IS used in the Hammers Slammers While it is set in the universe, it is not about the Hammers Slammers, as that is David Drake's own intellectual property. I merely made a unit and asked with permission. So while some may think it's not "Hammer's Slammers", it is not and never was intended. But instead of being a tank and combat car based unit, it is more of an airmobile unit, using vectored thrust tanks and infantry to perform their missions. While combat cars are mentioned in the stories, it is not entirely focused on that aspect. Also improved grammar.... if you really want to take the chance delete it from your Kindle and redownload...

Not what I expected from a "Slammers" story! But then again...

This is a new generation of Slammers, doing the same things in new ways. Well written with strong characters facing the challenges of a new era. This book is worthy of it's heritage!

Not too bad. I just felt that the characters could be more flashed out. In many of the stories they come across as two-dimensional. All in all I still think it s a good read when I want to relax with a light book to read.

3 1/2 stars. An intriguing melange of vignettes that detail mercenary life on a planet set in the future. The exploits of Lieutenant Karen Juniper are interspersed with the experiences of a newbie Lieutenant Tennant Jones as he learns his role in the squad. The realism conferred by the author's own experiences make these entertaining but sometimes chilling reads and gives the reader the opportunity to glimpse some of the obstacles and problems that face those in the field that are not always fully appreciated by those who are directing from behind the scenes. An entertaining read.
