Leslie Sansone, author of Walk Away the Pounds and Eat Smart, Walk Strong, tells us 'Studies show that the very best indicator that people will reach their fitness goals is the use of an exercise journal.' She has created The Essential Walker's Journal as a follow-up to previous books that detailed the rationale and basics of her walking programs (best known from their video and DVD exercise regime counterparts). This volume provides additional journaling space to encourage you to stick with the program.

Very basic nutrition and exercise information is given in the beginning of The Essential Walker's Journal. This is followed by a sixteen-week journal, one page per day. Each page includes a quotation, an interesting fact about food or exercise, or a reflecting question. Next is a section for Today's Walk, where you can record answers to the questions How Far?, Strength Training? and How'd it Go? There's a place to check off whether you've taken a multivitamin and to record hours of sleep. Since people commented that they enjoyed the section, A Beautiful Thing, in Sansone's first book, she includes it again here - space to detail something beautiful that you see each day in order to improve mental outlook along with physique. Nutrition Center provides a place to write down what you have eaten each day, and there are eight water glass icons so you can keep track of the amount of water drunk. Finally, there's a space for notes. Days are labeled Monday through Saturday, allowing a free day each week.

At the end of the journal is a four month wrap up, where you answer questions about what the program has done for you. There's not a lot of background information provided, so if you're looking for details on exactly what to do, you will need to get hold of the other books. The Essential Walker's Journal, however, is an excellent way to keep you motivated and on track with your exercise and nutrition programs. Writing down what you do can encourage you and help you to measure progress.
