glad to have the experience of visiting the mucha museum as well to have a slightly more complete picture of his life and works, though this definitely will not be the final book i read on this topic. visiting the museum in prague was an incredddddible experience and i loved reliving with this pretty little read
I picked this book up in the Prague airport on the way home as an afterthought. I’m glad we had a few extra minutes because it was worth the impulse buy. Often those purchases don’t pan out as well as this one did, like the house organ. But at about $5, the book not the organ, the stakes weren’t that high. It’s a quick read and a good miniature biography. There’s a lot of interesting stuff in Mucha’s life and it is written in a easy style to read. Mucha’s aesthetic theories are intriguing too and how they are intertwined in a nationalism and ethnic struggle speak to the condition of late 19th century and early 20th century Europe. He was born and flourished at the dawn of a new age only to die as that dawn was blotted out by the clouds of Nazi Germany. His work’s renaissance seems to be being born again at another tempestuous epoch.

Mucha – an illustrated life by Roman Neugebauer (2025) is a book about Alfonso Mucha (1860-1939) who was a Czech painter, illustrator, artist. He moved to Paris at an early age and also traveled to the USA. He was a cosmopolitan and is considered a co-founder of the Art Nevou style. Search for Gismonda 1894 or Zodiac 1896 and you will recognize the style. He painted his life's work "The Slav Epic" between 1910-1928 in a part of the national image and history of the Slavic peoples. The book has many pictures of both his artwork and contextualization (real photos). Easy to read and with interesting stories. One of Europe's "great cultural men" at the turn of the 20th century. Like the Swedish Carl Larsson or Johan Gustaf Sandberg – but for Czech/Slavic countries.
Impressive story about the wellknown artist and the struggles in his life! First the struggle to become an succesfull artist and get his name out there. Then, when his posters are a great succes and everybody has heard of Alfonso Mucha, the doubt comes about the vallue of all that he has done and he starts an epic work, telling the tale of the Slavs....
Bought the book after seeing the Mucha exhibition in Cesky Krumlov. It is easy to read and understandable. I love Muchas art and it's interesting to get a glimpse on the genius behind it.
Hezký zpracovaný úvod do Muchy života a díla. Krátké, stručně a rychle se to čte. - (Lowkey pokud se Mucha stejně flákal ve škole jako já tak mám ještě naději na zpěněnou životní krizi v padesáti)
