I can't praise this book enough, a wonderful conclusion to this earlier 'Enchanted Boy' - it deals with his life from 15 and experiences in London and the merchant marine as he goes after love - I think it is what makes this, as opposed to today's tales of surviving vicissitudes, so satisfying because he is not a conventional victim and his memoir, aside from being beautiful written, is free from all the tropes and conventions that this genre of writing has come to be plagued by and which so often reduces stories such as this to cliché. It was written before the fashion for 'survivor' stories.
I strongly recommend this excellent book. I am in the process of acquiring my own copy of this book - again - and will read it again - for the third time.

The danger and allure of prostitution for boys
Described as the author's "journey from prostitution to love", this memoir continues the story of Richie McMullen, recounted in Enchanted Boy, from the moment in November 1958, just after his fifteenth birthday, when he boarded a train in his native Liverpool in order to seek his fortune as a rent boy in London's Piccadilly Circus.
Enchanted Boy was good, but this is much better, Richie clearly having found his wings as a writer. There is more humour and finer description. Where its predecessor jumped about over ten years of Richie's life, this is a continuous narrative covering only sixteen months, and much more gripping. The drama is such as to strain its credibility as a strictly true story, especially the twists and strokes of fortune in the larger-than-life story of love at first sight and Richie's inadvertent brushes with the underworld of serious professional crime. I must admit to badly wanting it all to be true and, in the end, I was just able to. Curiously, some fairly important new details about Richie's earlier life emerge, suggesting that in his first book he had not felt able to tell all.
Enchanted Youth is also an intrinsically far more enjoyable story. Most of all this is due to the love story to die for of Richie and upper-class fourteen-year-old Alexander which, though taking up only a small portion of the novel, neatly holds it together. But even without that magical component, it is more inspiring than the grim story of Richie's childhood, largely because it is the story of a boy who has finally and rightly taken his life into his own hands.
The dedication of the book to boys in prostitution and the middle-aged Richie's charitable work on their behalf might have indicated an urge to decry their "fall" and the society that failed to prevent it, but campaigners hoping to find fuel here for stirring public indignation are likely to be sorely disappointed by Richie's frank and nuanced account. In the first place, the second sentence of the memoir will dispel any illusion that this writer, eminently well-qualified from experience to know what he is talking about, thinks pubescent boys are too young for sex: "My body was fifteen years old, excited, eager for the unknown and ready for all the sex and money it could come by." His much-respected friend Joker explains to a social worker, "We are sexual you know? ... You don't seem to understand, we actually enjoy having sex with other males." Secondly, though Richie is furious about the mistreatment of rent boys, especially his experience of being kidnapped and raped over two days, he refuses to condemn prostitution per se: "Don't get me wrong here. I'm not so much hung up about having sex for money as I am about putting up with the crap which goes with it. It's the way of living which is the problem not the selling of sex. Damn it, everyone sells something of themselves, whatever they do."
In the same way that I cannot imagine any spirited child failing to cheer for the girl heroine of Paper Moon in her final decision to run away, as I did at that age, so I cannot help but empathise with Richie for his decision to become a rent boy and, remembering in myself the adolescent longings he expressed so well in the second sentence I quoted, deeply envy him the freedom and the better of the adventures it afforded him. Hence much of the fascination in reading what happened, especially what happened sexually. Unlike its predecessor, Enchanted Youth is sometimes erotic and better for it, Richie soon turning against the Catholic indoctrination that had earlier ruined sex for him. It is notable, however, that though Richie says he was excited by sex with men, he never alludes to being turned on by them. The only genuinely erotic passages describe sex between Richie and other early teens, and are full of reminders of the smooth and hairless torsos of boys.
Richie is sadly dead, but if he were alive today, I somehow doubt he would approve of the disappearance of Piccadilly's boy prostitutes, long ago "airbrushed by omniscient CCTV cameras and the ubiquitous politics of totalitarianism," as Gail Cunningham aptly puts it in London Eyes. Enchanted Youth is an excellent memorial to an obviously lovable person who lived in more exciting times. If only he had left a third book to tell what became of him and Alexander!

Un libro brillante y repleto de sensibilidad y profundas reflexiones.
Desde que esté libro llegó a mis manos, recomendado por mi querido amigo Juan, mi intuición me dijo que sería de entretenimiento, pero ante todo de mucho aprendizaje, y, pues, no me equivoqué.
Narra de manera honesta y sensible, el mundo de la prostitución y todo a lo que los sexo-servidores deben enfrentarse para sobrevivir en un mundo despiadado, oscuro, en donde la supervivencia, es moneda al aire, todo el tiempo.
Richie de 15 años, se estrena en el mundo de alquilarse, a cambio de dinero. Es fuerte el impacto de las experiencias vividas y cómo estás, por más duras y ruines que sean, le dejan grandes lecciones, para hacer de este oficio uno temporal del cual poder prescindir, en el momento en que las circunstancias económicas, lo permitan.
Resulta conmovedor, porque el protagonista tiene 15 años y a los 15 años, su narrativa conmueve y lascera el alma y el corazón, profundamente.
Richie y Alexander: un amor separado por la distancia y sus temibles pruebas. Se siente la añoranza y el deseo, por ambos volver a encontrarse y en nombre del amor, ver consumado ese sentimiento grabado en piedra, juramento que no podrá ser burlado, ni por el tiempo, distancia, ni ningún otro obstáculo que se interponga.
Derramé muchas lágrimas y me conmoví de una manera profunda, honesta y sin pretenciones.
Un viaje de la prostitución al amor, de amarte y de no perder de vista la luz, a lo largo del lúgubre y tortuoso camino, presentado por la vida.
La búsqueda del cariño y afecto, no cae en el sentimentalismo y logra resultar genuinamente enternecedora.

Un libro que me ha encantado, tiene unas frases absolutamente especiales, y aborda el tema de la prostitución de una manera cruda, sin tapujos.
El poeta como así lo llaman, sale de una familia desestructurada para adentrase en los fondos de la prostitucion, que conlleva demasiados peligros.

"Siempre he aborrecido las reglas y las normas, sobre todo las reglas que sirven para que las cosas sigan como han estado siempre"

Si esto está basado en una vivencia real del autor, quiero llorar y, si no, también, porque sé que es una realidad.
Al principio pensaba que no, pero el libro me ha pegado fuerte, sobre todo en la recta final. Es tan trágico y bonito el amor, jo.
No tengo palabras, porque es un libro muy duro contado con la "inocencia" de un niño, lo que lo edulcora un poco, pero solo lo hace más horrible si te paras a pensarlo.
La historia me ha llevado consigo completamente y he leído con toda la atención e intriga.
No puedo decir mucho sin caer en el spoiler, porque lo más bonito es cerca del final. Solo diré que es inspirador y emocionante a la par que trágico. Habido un momento en el que he querido parar de leer y dejarlo todo, menos mal que he seguido un poco más.
Qué curioso que esta sociedad de 1958 no se aleje tanto de la nuestra. Los mismos tapujos, el mismo odio, los mismos miedos, la misma censura...
Una obra muy recomendada, incluso necesaria me atrevería a decir. Arroja luz sobre un mundo que vive en la sombra.

Me ha encantado, pero no por la historia de amor (que tampoco está mal aunque menos elaborada que las demás tramas) sino por sus personajes secundarios: El Bufón, Ángel, el Motorista, John Tenis, Joseph, son seres de luz.
Es un libro maravilloso sobre el maltrato de la vida, las consecuencias, la supervivencia, la familia que uno elige, el amor, la exploración sexual, la amistad. En algunos momentos parece demasiado apresurado, pero también lo agradezco porque así no se detiene en explicar detalles y va al grano. Un libro muy ligero, entretenido, con frases maravillosas y unas verdades inalterables a pesar de los años (en los que se basa la novela y la actualidad).
Todo transcurre en un período de 3 años, ¡y la cantidad de cosas que pasan!
Lo único que me falló es el Deux Ex Machina del final la verdad. Esperaba un desenlace mucho más elaborado pero de igual modo me emocionó.

Excelente lectura, fue corta pero llena de sentimientos y palabras que te llegan al alma, muestra la cruda vida de la prostitución masculina, la cual se suele infravalorar actualmente, viéndolo todo como un simole chiste.
Llegué a encariñarme muchísimo con los personajes. Me decepciona el poco reconocimiento que la gente le ha dado a esta pieza, creo que todos deberíamos leerla en algún momento para hacernos abrir los ojos a la realidad que parte de la población masculina vive, debemos entender que no solo las mujeres son víctimas de abusos tanto físicos como psicológicos (pero sí mayoría).
A pesar de estar llena de angustia, leer esta obra me ha llenado de felicidad, sobretodo por su final (aunque admito que esperaba un poco más). Probablemente una de las mejores lecturas que tendré este año. Completamente recomendada.

El libro es original, y la historia refleja una realidad que vivían hace años muchas personas de la comunidad LGBT, como la prostitution, violaciones, abusos, discriminación y muchas otras cosas.
La lectura es sencilla, pero sí que hay partes que el autor describe con más detalle que son innecesarias, y otras que tienen mas peso las dice muy a la ligera y a veces sientes que hay unos giros en la historia un tanto bruscos.
Por lo general, fácil de leer y entretenido.

En general, el libro me ha parecido entretenido. Es una historia de un joven que de dedica a la prostitución desde temprana edad y que se enfrenta a los peligros y riesgos que conlleva dicho trabajo. Sin embargo, ha sido muy utópica para mi gusto. Al final me quedé con la sensación que estaba frente a una versión live action de una historia de Disney.

perfect sequel to the marked depression of the first memoir, coming away with hope. really refreshingly unabashed descriptions of gay intimacy and gay self-love too, particularly considering how long ago it was. I wish so bad I could have been friends with this guy somehow

Este libro lo leí de adolescente y me sentí muy identificado con todos los sentimientos que se viven en ese momento y el auto descubrimiento.

Who’d a thunk this random book I picked up at the queer book fair for FREE would turn out to be a five-star book? Not me! It’s your classic story of boy runs away from an abusive family to make it as a rent boy in the big city (London), finds a group of good friends and has a few exciting adventures (it was giving Fagin’s gang if they were rent boys in the 1950s instead of pickpockets in the Victorian era). Boy then falls in love with a posh boy who is shipped off to Singapore with the rest of his posh family, so boy decides to join the navy in a quest to be reunited… I’ll let you read it to find out what happens. While the ending was a bit too abrupt for me, I was along for the ride the whole time! Beautiful prose and poetry scattered throughout, a cool POV (I think it’s semi-autobiographical?), a fair dose of teenage gay lust, and a fun cast of characters. Well done!

I liked this sequel better than Enchanted Boy. Richie runs away from Liverpool, headed for Picadilly Circus, where he can make money as a rent boy. On the train he falls in love with an upper class boy, and the book is the story of Richie's attempts to find this boy again while working as a rent boy in London.
Very well-written and moving. Probably not easy to find.
