According to the introduction of Colville's English translation, Muḥammad al-Nafzawi probably wrote The Perfumed Garden sometime during the twelfth century. Sheikh Nefzawi was born among the Berber Nefzawa tribe in the south of present-day Tunisia. He compiled it at the request of the Hafsid ruler of Tunis, Abū Fāris ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Mutawakkil. The reputation acquired by this work in the Arab world was similar to that of the Arabian Nights.

"Your religion resides in your vulva, and the manly member is your soul."

A book about sex, with various positions, advices, medical hints, and anecdotes. Sounds like a run of the mill sex education book right?

Well, how about this. It was written sometime in the 15th century (around 600 years ago), an Arabic-Islamic sex manual, written for readers of that time. Now THAT'S interesting. The translation itself is fairly old, translated into English more than 100 years back, and that itself is interesting. You see, the translated book was intended for a private group only, with limited prints, has a prologue that apologizes to the reader for its content, and doesn't translate the last chapter, which is apparently about butt sex with men. How times have changed! There used to be a time when the west would censor us because of how dirty we WERE. How times have changed, Gulf Countries and Iran.

The book has lots of tips. Foreplay is very important, various positions are described, herbs and such are used, precautions, health concerns, and my favorites, small stories, to illustrate the point.

"You kiss my hand--my mouth should be the place!
O woman, thou who art my idol!
It was a fond kiss you gave me, but it is lost,
The hand cannot appreciate the nature of a kiss."

I do wish I knew Arabic to read the text in the original, specially the poems, such as this hot number,

"I prefer a young man for coition, and him only;
He is full of courage--he is my sole ambition,
His member is strong to deflower the virgin,
And richly proportioned in all its dimensions;
It has a head like to a brazier.
Enormous, and none like it in creation;
Strong it is and hard, with the head rounded off.
It is always ready for action and does not die down;
It never sleeps, owing to the violence of its love.
It sighs to enter my vulva, and sheds tears on my belly;
It asks not for help, not being in want of any;
It has no need of an ally, and stands alone the greatest fatigues,
And nobody can be sure of what will result from its efforts.
Full of vigour and life, it bores into my vagina,
And it works about there in action constant and splendid.
First from the front to the back, and then from the right to the left;
Now it is crammed hard in by vigorous pressure,
Now it rubs its head on the orifice of my vagina.
And he strokes my back, my stomach, my sides,
Kisses my cheeks, and anon begins to suck at my lips.
He embraces me close, and makes me roll on the bed,
And between his arms I am like a corpse without life.
Every part of my body receives in turn his love-bites,
And he covers me with kisses of fire;
When he sees me in heat he quickly comes to me,
Then he opens my thighs and kisses my belly,
And puts his tool in my hand to make it knock at my door.
Soon he is in the cave, and I feel pleasure approaching.
He shakes me and trills me, and hotly we both are working,
And he says, 'Receive my seed!' and I answer, 'Oh give it beloved one!
It shall be welcome to me, you light of my eyes!
Oh, you man of all men, who fillest me with pleasure.
Oh, you soul of my soul, go on with fresh vigour,
For you must not yet withdraw it from me; leave it there,
And this day will then be free of all sorrow.
He had sworn to God to have me for seventy nights,
And what he wished for he did, in the way of kisses and embraces, during all those nights."

As a child my folks had a copy of The Perfume Garden and kept it hidden. Of course I ferreted it out. Having since allowed my younger self a liberal exposure to the pornography of ours and other generations I conclude that it is not reasonable to lump The Perfume Garden into the category of pornography. It is only marginally raw enough to be classified as erotica. It is a combination of a 16th century Arabian sex manual and collection of related stories of adult bedroom games. I have something of an amateur's interest in Sir Richard Burton having read two of his biographies. From some of the things he included in his journals he was quite capable of being very explicit on the subject of sexual matters. In this translation it is difficult for a non-Arabic linguist to state categorically that his translation is as explicit as the original or has been compromised in an effort to make it more acceptable to his Victorian audience. This qualification is based on the suspicion that his intended audience was a fairly elite academically oriented Victorian audience.

Irrespective of my hypothesis, The Perfume Garden is a capital "C" Classic. That is the value of its content and its literary merit is established and unlikely to change in stature stature based on my assignment stars. I will justify my recommendation rather than a detailed or summarize the contents.

Within the Muslim community there are advocates of a strict Sharia law that an outsider might find inconsistent with this book. This book reflects 500-year-old Muslim sensibilities and thereby argues for a more nuanced appreciation of Arabic and Muslim culture. This nuanced appreciation is something few Westerners can achieve via general public discussion. By the same token Muslim radicals might want to seriously consider what this portion of their heritage means in the context of those who would be inflexible applying religious law.

My recommendation is that you read this as a cultural artifact, as much a Victorian cultural artifact as an Arabian one. The sex manual portion of the book is not bad. At least it recognizes the value of seducing and satisfying your partner and that hygiene and style matter. The included stories are somewhat dated and stilted but still fun. Given the choices available in the 21st century, The Perfumed Garden is neither hard-core nor explicit. It is a worthy read and indeed worth many times the one dollar being charged for this Kindle edition.

Similar in content to the Kama Sutra, but doused with stories and hence reminiscent of 1001 Arabian Nights. It's also noticeably misogynistic.

The most informationally~oriented chapters:
Chapter 8 : around 68 euphemisms for the male member, with a mid~chapter discussion on dreams.
Chapter 9 : Ditto viz. the vagina, plus a long, boring story.
Chapter 10: Animal penises
Chapter 13~20: Medical problems

A few excerpts :

"The man who deserves favours is, in the eyes of women, the one who is anxious to please them... of good presence... of good shape and well-formed... true and sincere in his speech... generous and brave, not vain~glorious, and pleasant in conversation. A slave to his promise, he must always keep his word, ever speak the truth, and do what he has said."

"God, the magnificent, has said: 'Women are your field. Go upon your field as you like."

"A humid kiss is better than a hurried coitus."

"Know that the man who works a woman younger than he is himself acquires new vigour; if she is of the same age as he is he will derive no advantage from it; and, finally, if it is a woman older than himself she will take all his strength out of him for herself."

"Women are demons, and were born as such; No one can trust them, as is known to all."

"To acquire vigour for coition... melt down fat from the hump of a camel. The virile member, rubbed with donkey's milk, will become uncommonly strong and vigorous."

A book advised by Kumar. I found of it a version digitized on the site of BNF. It is a kind Romans Courtois of the Middle Age. But sex is present, naturally, a quest of pleasure . It is a translation a little old-fashioned of the end of XIXth. And I understand the fascination of this people for this voluptuous and sensual Orient, as in Occident, sexuality was a taboo topic.
Interesting thing, one speaks about the female pleasure, it is rather modern. Interesting book.
Thank you Kumar.

So far, the most enjoyable, luscious, lascivious, erotic, hard-core, improper, lecherous. lustful, naughty, pornographic, racy, risqué, sexually explicit and '50 Shades Of Grey' '15th century Islamic' book I've read so far.

Its is, after all, the Arabic cum Islamic Kamasutra, with a lot of raunchy stories of 'coition' (who uses this word anymore?).

There's too many funny quotes/poems about men/women's roles, the names given to their body parts (which are hilariously accurate) such as "The Impudent One," "The Rummager," "The Glutton," "The Biter,"... you get the idea.

The book also talks about techniques to make you last '40 days straight'. Also sex positions, sex performances (this part really helped back in the bedroom), and oh, the tales, the tales of lust between princess and prince, man and woman!

Its a hilarious, and lightly educating book, especially when looked from a historical point of view. A bit sexist (for both guys and girs) too.

Below are some of the quotes/poems from the book.

"The man who deserves favours is, in the eyes of women, the one who is anxious to please them. He must be of good presence, excel in beauty those around him, be of good shape and well-formed proportions; true and sincere in his speech with women; he must likewise be generous and brave, not vainglorious, and pleasant in conversation. A slave to his promise, he must always keep his word, ever speak the truth, and do what he has said."

"Women are demons, and were born as such; No one can trust them, as is known to all."

"To acquire vigour for coition... melt down fat from the hump of a camel. The virile member, rubbed with donkey's milk, will become uncommonly strong and vigorous."

Men are divided according to their affairs and doings;
Some are always in spirits and joyful, others in tears.
There are those whose life is restless and full of misery,
While, on the contrary, others are steeped in good fortune,
Always in luck's happy way, and favoured in all things.
I alone am indifferent to all such matters.
What care I for Turkomans, Persians, and Arabs?
My whole ambition is in love and coition with women,
No doubt nor mistake about that!
If my member is without vulva, my state becomes frightful,
My heart then burns with a fire which cannot be quenched.
Look at my member erect! There it is--admire its beauty!
It calms the heat of love and quenches the hottest fires
By its movement in and out between your thighs.
Oh, my hope and my apple, oh, noble and generous lady,
If one time will not suffice to appease thy fire,
I shall do it again, so as to give satisfaction;
No one may reproach thee, for all the world does the same.
But if you choose to deny me, then send me away!
Chase me away from thy presence without any fear or remorse!
Yet bethink thee, and speak and augment not my trouble,
But, in the name of God, forgive me and do not reproach me.
While I am here let thy words be kind and forgiving.
Let them not fall upon me like sword-blades, keen and cuffing!
Let me come to you and do not repel me.
Let me come to you like one that brings drink to the thirsty;
Hasten and let my hungry eyes look at thy bosom.
Do not withhold from me love's joys, and do not be bashful,
Give yourself up to me--I shall never cause you trouble,
Even were you to fill me with sickness from head to foot.
I shall always remain as I am, and you as you are,
Knowing that I am the servant, and you are the mistress ever.
Then shall our love be veiled? It shall be hidden for all time,
For I keep it a secret and I shall be mute and muzzled.
It is by God's will that everything happens,
And he has filled me with love; but today my luck is ill.

I prefer a young man for coition, and him only;
He is full of courage--he is my sole ambition,
His member is strong to deflower the virgin,
And richly proportioned in all its dimensions;
It has a head like to a brazier.
Enormous, and none like it in creation;
Strong it is and hard, with the head rounded off.
It is always ready for action and does not die down;
It never sleeps, owing to the violence of its love.

this is a real song of sensual delights a bit on the daring side. it is no less than than the kama sutra or other erotic literature. but that a Muslim wrote it and the guy was a Kadi, a judge gives it a rare pleasure.

I didn't actually finish reading this book, but I've read one-third of it and I can bet my middle finger that the rest is the regurgitation of the first one-third of the book. I also learned that the only way to seduce women is to intoxicate them with exotic herbs and oud.

This is a sex manual from the 7th? 8th? century written in i think Tunisia. I feel the need to explain what exactly it is and why i read it so that my friends don't think i'm secretly reading ancient sex manuals all the time and so that people who randomly see i rated and reviewed this don't think i'm secretly reading ancient sex manuals all the time. Well i don't know what to tell you all, it's just interesting to see how sex has been thought of throughout history ... in ways that are often quite the same as today but sometimes shockingly different. But also this book is hilarious and crude and nasty, idk, it's funny to think it was written in Ye Olden Times. That's all, i don't really have any deep thoughts or am willing to go into more detail right now because my friends are throwing rocks at my window, we're going to ride bikes together, it's the last warmer day of autumn... The leaves are golden, sparkling on their way down from the branches to the gray asphalt. Anyway

Curious and funny

When I read an article about this book I was interested to know the arab version of the kama sutra where the pleasures of women seemed to also be covered. I found that. I found also a lot "machista" comments and stories, bias against certain types of women, some very weird recipes for different sexual ailments and many funny stories. It is overall very well written and the arab ability to tell good stories is spread across all the pages making it a good entertainment.

This books has it ups and downs. Some parts are really amusing like the little tales of lovers, different names of genetalia, recommendations according to body type and ancient contraceptives. But the roots of patriarchal society is evident. I mean for a book all about men tricking and, sometimes even raping women, it sure spends a lot of time complaining about the "treachery" of women (one of the longest chapters of the book).

As old timey sex manuals go (somehow this has become my specialty while doing research for my own writing), I'd put this in the same vein as Capellanus's "The Art of Courtly Love," except "The Perfumed Garden" is more raunchy, like the "Kama Sutra." I think it's funnier than the "Kama Sutra" though, particularly because of the two chapters that list euphemisms for male and female genitalia. You know, "The Impudent One," "The Rummager," "The Glutton," "The Biter." It even explains each of the names, like the names alone aren't descriptive enough.

In the true fashion of an Islamic scholar, the book also offers medical advice on various sexual maladies--very wrong-headed by modern standards. For example, did you know sexual positions with the woman on top will cause urinary infections? I didn't!

As you can guess, the book is very misogynist, in keeping with the time period. With this book in particular, the physical descriptions of women are like descriptions of livestock. For example, this excerpt from the chapter called "Concerning Women who Deserve to be Praised:"

"With cheek of perfect oval, she will have an elegant nose and a graceful mouth; lips and tongue vermilion; her breath will be of pleasant odor, her throat long, her neck strong, her bust and belly large...she must have the thighs and buttocks hard, the hips large and full, a waist of fine shape, hands and feet of striking elegance, pump arms, and well-developed shoulders."

Like anything written centuries ago, use this book for historical reference only (or for humor, if you find this sort of thing as funny as I do).

How debauched we are, and how tireless in the pursuit of pleasure.
__________
In writing this book
I have sinned indeed!
Your pardon, oh lord, I surely shall need;
But, if on the last day you absolve me, why then,
All my readers will join me
In a loud . . . Amen!

You have no reason to feel shame, for all you have written in this book is quite true, there is nothing in it to upset anyone. In any case you are not the first to cover these matters and I swear that the knowledge contained in this book needs to be given to all. It is only the ignorant and fearful who will avoid it or make fun of it.

__________
It is Nature also, in her wisdom, that has embellished a woman’s chest with breasts, her neck with a fine chin and her cheeks with jewels and colours. The woman also has eyes to inspire love, eyelashes sharp as polished blades and a delightful navel. Then lies the heightened beauty of her gently domed belly and the subtle endowment of her noble buttocks, supported by the whole majesty of her wonderful thighs. And placed between these glorious muscles is the loving battleground, hopefully voluptuous and resembling the fullness of a lion’s head. Oh, the vulva, how many brave men have died for this? Nature has given this place a mouth, a tongue, two lips, and a shape like the footprint of a gazelle on the sands of a desert.

Woman swims in a sea of splendour, voluptuousness and delight, clothed in precious raiment, her face brightened with smiles.

The glory of the universe has given woman a power of seduction over all men who fall under the spell of their love, whether they be weak or strong or without distinction.

I have heard that on a certain day Abel el Melik ben Merouan looked for his mistress Leilla and asked her questions about many things. Among others he asked her what qualities a woman looks for in a man. Her answer was, ‘They must have cheeks like ours and hair like ours. In fact, they must be like you, for truly if a man isn’t wealthy and powerful, he will have no success with women.’

As soon as he saw that the beautiful odours from the perfumes were intense enough to mipregnatte the water in the tent, he mounted his throne and sent for the prophetess. She entered the tent and, once they were alone, he spoke to her. While he spoke to her she began to lose her presence of mind, seeming thunderstruck and mesmerised.
Watching her in this condition he knew that she wanted to make love, so he said, ‘Come and let me possess your body, for this place has been prepared for that purpose. Tell me whatever position you wish to adopt—on your back, on all fours, in a position of prayer or like a tripod with your head on the ground and your buttocks in the air—and you shall be satisfied.’
‘I want it in every way you mention,’ replied the prophetess. ‘Let me be available for all pleasures, O greatest of prophets.’

And finally, he who boasts of his relationships with women is most unattractive.

‘What is your price?’ she asked.
‘Coition, my beautiful woman.’
‘You understand our business?’
‘No one understands women better than I do, for I know what women like. Listen mistress. In this world men take up various occupations in accordance with their tastes. This one takes, that one gives, this one sells, that one buys. But none of these things attract me. My sole thought is of love and the possession of beautiful women. I heal those who are suffering through love, and bring relief to thirsting vulvas.’

Am I awake or am I dreaming?

He examined her belly which was elegantly domed and let his gaze rest on her navel, which looked like a pearl in a golden bowl, but, when he let his eyes travel lower, he saw a wonderful creation and well-turned thighs of dazzling white.

Her neck was like that of a gazelle, the opening of her mouth like a ring and her fresh lips were red as a dripping sword. Her teeth were like pearls and her cheeks like roses.

If a woman possessing these qualities is seen from the front, the sight is ravishing and if seen from behind, fatal.

He drinks nothing but old Muscatel wine.

This story presents but a small part of the tricks and stratagems used by woman against their husbands. The moral of the tale is, that a man who falls in love with a woman imperils himself and exposes himself to the greatest troubles.

Any posture is unsatisfactory if kissing is impossible, as a kiss is one of the most potent stimulants in which a man or a woman can indulge.

A kiss given on the outside of the lips accompanied by the sound we make when calling a cat gives no pleasure at all. Such a kiss is only meant for children. The kiss which I have just described above and which belongs to love-making provokes a delicious voluptuousness. It is for you to learn the difference.

Know that the man who works a woman younger than himself acquires new vigour, if she is of the same age he will derive no advantage from it, and, finally, if it is a woman older than himself she will sap him of all his strength.

It is posited that to look into the cavity of the vagina is injurious to the eyes. This is a question for a physician and not for a mere advisor. It is told with regard to this subject that Hacen ben Isehac, Sultan of Damascus, was in the habit of examining the interior of women’s parts and being warned not to do it he said, ‘Is there a pleasure preferable to this?’ And thus before long we was blind.

It is also not well to constantly wear vestments made of silk as they can impair all the energy for copulation. Silken cloths worn by women also affect injuriously the capacity for erection of the virile member.

I was in love with a woman who was all grace and perfection, beautiful of shape and gifted with all imaginable charms. Her cheeks were like roses, her forehead lily-white, her lips like coral. She had teeth like pearls and breasts like pomegranates. Her mouth opened round like a ring, her tongue seemed to be encrusted with precious gems, her eyes, black and finely slit, had the languor of slumber, and her voice the sweetness of sugar. With her form pleasantly filled out, her flesh was mellow like fresh butter and pure as the diamond.

When a woman wants something, all precautions are useless.

An excellent book, especially read in conjunction with Robin Schone's The Lady's Tutor, which uses this Arabic sex manual as a textbook for a prim Victorian wife who wants to seduce her husband. The Perfumed Garden is an excellent read, and illustrates descriptions of various themes with stories of men and women. Recommended.

Fascinating (and often humorous) look into the male Arab mindset concerning sex from that period. Would be really interesting to read a similar book written by a woman from that period...
