Rammstein

Rate this book
Rammstein is definitely one of the most refreshing and challenging rock acts of the last years. Since their appearance in David Lynch's "Lost Highway, " the band received wide attention around the globe, and Rammstein videos couldn't possibly be left out of any MTV rock show. Their spectacular live performances resulted in a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Act and two million albums sold in the U.S. to date. It is hard to think of any other foreign-speaking rock band whose lyrics are sung by 20,000 or more American fans in their live shows. This Rammstein photo book is a breathtaking visual trip into their world, edited by the band itself and Gert Hof, who has been the mastermind behind their visual appearances since the beginning. The book is released in two most excellently produced versions: a luxurious hardcover and an affordable softcover.

I bought this book in 2003, when I was in grade 12. At the time it was the most expensive book that I’d ever bought (over $50 Canadian). I’ve been a huge fan of RAMMSTEIN for over 20 years, and this book is like meeting up with old friends. I love the photography that is used. The only negative towards the book is that I wish the interviews with each band member would’ve been longer. Overall, a fun re-read, and exciting as I am travelling to Montreal in August to see them live for the third time!

During our recent move, I uncovered this book in one of my boxes from my Air Force days. This was a purchase during that time of my life when I had a steady paycheck and no bills to pay.

After well over a decade since I bought this book, it was interesting to take a trip back in time when Rammstein was my favorite band. While I still appreciate the band today and would be happy to listen to almost any of their songs, they don't have that deep of an impact on me today. Back in high school when I was learning German, I quickly accelerated at listening and speaking due to the obsessive manner in which I listened to their songs.

As a thirty-five year old, as I flipped through the pictures and read the translated interviews with band members, I remembered the days when I thought their music videos were avant garde and their lyrics were cutting edge since they sang about such taboo topics. Today, all of their shock value seems quaint to me in a whimsical way.

Rammstein was a big influence in an earlier chapter of my life. Their concerts that I went to are still the some of the most memorable experiences I've had in my life. I would love to see them again, but this time from a bit of a farther vantage point and not in the mosh pit. However, that part of my life is now a memory and this book, a memorabilia from that time period, does not arouse that much nostalgia for me.

Going through this book was a nice look back in my past, but I will be passing it on to my friend who will appreciate this much more since heavy metal is still a major part of his life.

Love it (:
