4th and Fixed is a stunning novel about a pair of memorable wiseguys who against all odds fix a season's worth of NFL games. Written with an authentic voice that could only come from a former NFL player, Reggie Rivers bursts into fiction with a force and style reminiscent of Peter Gent's classic bestseller North Dallas Forty. 4th and Fixed goes inside the world of professional football like no other book, and does so with an unforgettable set of Michael Gasca, the ultimate, clever fixer; his literally larger-than-life partner, Roscoe Evans, a 320-pound enforcer; Jonathan Kinneson, the devious new owner of the San Antonio Stallions willing to do the unthinkable to snag his team a Super Bowl victory; Trevor Deale, the star quarterback of the Stallions who can read a defense in the blink of the center's snap; Trevor's gorgeous, bitchy and untrustworthy girlfriend; and Steven Oquist, an NFL special agent charged with keeping illegal gambling and the mob on the sidelines. 4th and Fixed is as riveting as the last moments of a tied Super Bowl game.
Decent and captivating story if you can get past the amateurish writing style. I got this from a library and toward the middle of the book, someone started to edit the mistakes they found, which was more than one per chapter. Misspellings, grammar errors, strange word usage and weak adjective use abound. This guy needs to find a synonym for "moan". Everyone moans in this book, from the guy getting out of the car to the lady getting the pipe from a football player.
This book was very good! It gave a very realistic situation of how one person can black mail anyone so that they can win a bet! This story seems very real and had good facts about todays sports and how fixing a game would be so easy! This is a very good read and I would recommend it for anyone that like books about crime and sports!
Picked this up as a free book from the Library. Pro football and organized crime, what better for a quick relatively mindless read. Some interesting characters and a slightly off beat plot. Much like cotton candy, tastes good, is ephemeral and once you have done it no need to do it again. Given a choice between three hours reading this novel and the Oscars, the book wins.
Fun read. Although Rivers breaks the basic POV rules of writing 101, he creates an enjoyable read by breaking the rules well - I was never lost wondering which of the character POVs I was in, I was interested in the story from beginning to the end, it was funny and for this football fan, informative.
Because you are interested in sports and humor, you might like 4th and Fixed by Reggie Rivers. Odds are you’ll be amused by this insightful and intriguing novel.
