Six years after writing and illustrating Daddy's Roommate, Michael Willhoite brings another pioneering story. Nick is like any other 10-year-old boy, but when Daddy and Daddy's roommate, Frank, decide to get married, Nick gets to do something extra special: play best man. And while everybody celebrates the big wedding day, the dog Clancy is working on a big surprise for all of them!
A serviceable children’s book about a gay wedding before gay people could get married anywhere. Absolutely presented in a way that young kids would understand, but it feels almost too simple. I think kids (particularly kids of gay parents) deserve a little more credit when it comes to stories about their families, and this one kind of presents it with a shiny gloss and lacks an emotional truth.
Excellently done, especially considering the time at which it was written. Also, blessedly, now outdated since the son asks if two men can get married and the father says 'we call it a commitment ceremony.'

This is a story about a very strong topic in the world right now. There is a little boy that knows that his father is his friend that is a man, and he doesn't think much of it. One day his father tells his son that he will be marrying his friend that is his roommate. The boy once again does not think very much of it. He thinks that his father should be able to marry who he loves. I was surprised to see that there was a book out there like this. I feel like this is the type of book that many parents feel is too inappropriate for their child to read. In my opinion, I feel like this book should be shared with children while they are young so that they learn young that it is okay for a person to love who they love. Children will react to things in the way they are taught when they are young, and they should be taught that you can be who you are, in my opinion. This book is a portrait and it is also a motif cover. The illustrator is Michael Willhoite who is also the author.
This book is a great book to introduce to children if they may not know what same sex marriage is. The book is about a young boy and his father has a friend. The father tells his son he is going to marry his roommate, the little boy doesn't think anything of it. He thinks that people should be able to marry who they love. It is a very critical issue that is happening very often today, and I think this would be a great book to introduce the subject to a child who may have two parents of the same sex.
I used this book to introduce gay rights to my Sunday School class. It was a good discussion-starter. Although this book is written for children, it was only available at one local library on the parenting shelf.
