Highland Duo #2

Highland Rogue, London Miss

Rate this book
A brash highlander and a prim bluestocking go undercover in London society as a married couple in this Regency romance by a USA Today bestseller.

Quintus MacLachlann is arrogant--unapologetically so. When he's asked to impersonate one half of a married couple to infiltrate Edinburgh society, he relishes the challenge of being "married" to the frustratingly willful yet beautiful Esme.

Esme makes no bones about her fervent dislike of the dishonored rake. He's the last person on earth she can conceive of marrying, sham or otherwise. But being forced to play wife to the handsome-as-sin wastrel brings up very real feelings of desire. . . .

Praise for Highland Rogue, London Miss

"The talented Moore has penned another exciting Regency. The narrative is rich, the dialogue authentic and the characters entertaining. This is a tale of how opposites attract and passions are stirred." --RT Book Reviews

I wanted to like this book so much. I have worked in the law for ages and I am studying (very slowly) for my law degree - you can imagine how excited I was to see that the heroine in this was a Regency female lawyer!

What let this book down for me was the attitude towards intelligence, beauty and traditional gender roles. The story revolves around law-obsessed Esme, her solicitor brother and his friend and associate Quintus as they attempt to investigate a mystery. Esme was from the very first shrill, annoying and constantly "proving" her knowledge by telling her lawyer brother and his associate what the law was. When she and the hero are sent on the quest, she is ambivalent until the hero points out that she should be grateful to her brother for letting her do so much in the firm.

And that was when my head exploded. LET HER do all his drafts? She's saving him a fortune! Yes, sure, it is fortunate for her that he has non-traditional ideas about her value as a woman, but he still just gives her housekeeping money, not a wage, and saves a fortune by not having to hire a junior or a clerk to do all the drafting work Esme is doing.

But anyway, Esme and Quintus pretend to be married and she wears prettier clothes and they go to some parties, all the while Esme tries to hide both her intelligence and the fact that she secretly loves wearing pretty clothes. She occasionally slips because of the force of her personality but she's falling in love with Quintus and being a Lady so that makes things easier. *sigh* And Quintus talks a good game about being attracted to her intelligence, but there's an awful lot of word count spent on what she's wearing and her boobs and how these two things make him feel. And then at the end I feel that while lip-service is given to her dream, she has willingly accepted a far more traditional gender role that undermines a lot of who she was to begin with.

I felt during the whole novel nothing much needed to be done by the characters to solve the mystery. Sure, the protagonists undertake tasks designed to help them gather information, but (without going into too much detail) in the end they could have done nothing at all and the only thing different would be they wouldn't have been forced into close proximity long enough to fall for each other.

So I would say that while there was nothing wrong with the writing per se, I didn't enjoy the book overall. Some of the lines were brilliant and I actually really liked Quintus (though I would have liked a little more of his and his family's back story). 2.5 stars.

Let me start by saying I love this book, otherwise I wouldn't have read it four times. Harlequin Romance novels are usually fun for a quick read and sometimes its a miss. However, Highland Rogue, London Miss is definitely a fun quick read. I just couldn't put it done when I got it. I practically stayed up all night to read. (Just to let you know I purchased it about 9PM at Walmart).

So you have Esme McCallen and Quintus MacLachlan and there is so much sexual tension between them that its kinda funny. So, her brother gets a letter from an girlfriend saying that she is in trouble and needs legal help. He sends his sister with Quin unto Scotland to help solve the problem. Together they masquerade as Quin's brother and sister-in-law since he go around society. Your wonder where his brother is in all this, well he is somewhere in the Caribbean. So you see them a couple compromising situation throughout the book. Highly entertaining. The best part is the end, which if you want to know your going to need to read the book. Just to let you know I had to do a double take on it. As my friend put it "a jaw dropper." Definitely like WHAT!

Looking for a quick read an unexpected ending you might want to give a try.

An enjoyable read. What's a heroine to do when asked to pretend to be the wife of a disinherited nobleman? Of course such a bluestocking is going to reject him at first...but not frever. Margaret Moore makes the journey to them becoming an official, real loving couple a pleasure.

Nice twist take on the usual, with a disgraced highborn man who's been humbled and a commoner who's living an uncommon life for a woman. I liked them both & pleased for their earned-hea.

I found the /everyone who might be an impediment suddenly dies/ gambit at the end kind of hilarious. Not really the dramatic effect intended perhaps. However, the charming & engaging leads with good heft of emotion helped me forgive a lot, and I liked their character & actually talking about stuff instead of assuming-the-worst plotting that I'll take some convenient death. Not much of a mystery either, despite the whole conceit of the book is them joining up to solve a mystery--weak red herrings, nothing active done toward the mystery, and then it more or less resolves itself--but then this isn't a romantic suspense, it's just wallpaper for a love story of manners. I'm down.

Pretty great read, I suppose. Read it out of boredom again, it did entertain me for a while but I wish we've gotten more of Esme's intelligence, I would love to see her being showcasing her brilliant mind.

When she transformed into a lady-like woman, I figured she'd hate it—she did, but she grew to embrace it which is fine by me! I just don't like how lust is involve in this. This book could've been better if only it stayed sweet and romantic. Although there's nothing wrong with those kind of chapters, it just ruins my reading experience.

Overall, it is easy to read and young adults would for sure read this book if given the chance to do so. I enjoyed it though!! It has been a long time since I read this book, so bear with me because I only mentioned the one's I remember.

Such a lovely romance! With very hot scenes in the right amount! The background story is also really well developed and built. It was a great book and I even dare to say that I learned some new stuff with it :). Highly recommended.

Just picked up this book because I like to read Margaret Moore. I like this story very much. Again, characters who seem to think they know someone, judging their past and not their present. It of course all come right in the end and every one lives happily ever after.

While perusing the aisles of my favorite local used book store, I came across this one and picked it up because of the pretty cover, but bought it because the words "highland" and "rogue" appeared on it. Lately I've found I can't resist anything promising me a roguish alpha male with a Scottish accent and Highland Rogue, London Miss delivers a fairly decent portrayal.

The basic concept of this novel is finding out what happens when you take an opinionated, virtuously headstrong women, and a freewheeling handsome rogue and place them in a situation where they must pretend they are married. As you can imagine, it's a tough situation as it is, but then place them in 1800s England and Scotland and it becomes scandalously interesting.

The plot behind the romance is a bit weak and seems to be forced in order to set up steamy situations for our hero and heroine. Besides this flaw, it really is just a quick read with fun characters and decent love scenes built up with sexual tension fueled by what is or isn't proper. Don't get me wrong, that can be a great formula when it comes to 1800s romance, but it is only so-so in this particular case.

Quintus MacLachlann is a man of many talents, he had to learn to survive when he was disowned by his family. His friend Jamie McCallan convinces him to bring Esme MacCallan to Edinburgh to investigate what is going on with his ex-fiance's family. His ex, Catriona McNare is convinced that her father is in financial difficulties but not telling her.

Now the story was pretty good, I found it quite entertaining, however there was no sense of location, Edinburgh is a complex and interesting city with a myriad of little alleyways and geography that would bend your brain, but there was no sense of that. It just didn't sing to me. I did like the characters and Esme is a great fun read. Also, however, it was very irresponsible of her brother to send her to Edinburgh with a male, with whom she isn't related. Someone like that in that period wouldn't have even considered it.

Good but left me with niggles. (

A London society woman wanting to be a private investigator and a Scottish male rogue working for her brother who does investigative work become involved together in a mission to help her brother's former love interest. An historical tale where the couple must pose as the man's married brother and his wife to find out what is happening that involves the father of the woman who broke an engagement to the man she's now asking for help. The fact that the two investigators do not get along well makes for some interesting action; it heats itself up with romance. There are some surprises involved including what has actually happened to the requestor's father and his finances.

awww me encantó!!!
