I’ve read the previous volume of La Muerta and I enjoyed it enough to back the second when that was announced. These always seem like a good deal; a decent to good story, some really good art and a ton of extra stuff thrown in.

This picks up from the previous volume. Diaz as her vigilante persona La Muerta, fights against the drug cartels that plague the city, using supernatural powers and loads of guns. Throw in gang leader cutting out hearts as sacrifices, a demonic witch, a returning villain literally returning from hell, a corrupt senator, and a ton a henchmen and a million bullets you get a fun, action filled story, but one that isn’t the most original.

The story is fine for what it is, but even the more supernatural stuff doesn’t make it standout enough or make it really compelling, with many of the ideas used in other and better stories. If it wasn’t for the excellent art and designs the story might not be enough to carry the success of this series. Like I said, it’s not a bad story, just something you’ve seen before, but the art helps carry the book over the line.

I got the extra story with this; Primeval; where Diaz goes to the amazon to help rescue a former solider, she owes a debt to. For a one shot, separate from the main story this was fine, but suffers a little from the same issues as the main story. Pretty basic story, that while fun with the action, doesn't hit hard enough with an art style that does some heavy lifting.

I do enjoy these; an avenging beautiful woman given supernatural powers from the Saint of death and access to a massive arsenal fighting drug cartels unleashing evil using henchmen armed to the teeth and demons straight from hell is always going to appeal to me. Added with the great art and interesting designs of Diaz/La Muerta and some of the others really is one of the books main selling points. And on those two points alone I would give it a recommendation. Just don’t go in thinking it’s going to be some deep or gripping. Think less The Crow mixed with Sicario and more like Drive Angry mixed with Sabotage.
