That Night We Made Baby

Rate this book
One revealing moment

Finally she turned and Nicholas saw Samantha's face. Her eyes were as he remembered, her hair just as soft. The months they'd spent apart fell away and Nicholas ached to touch this woman he could no longer claim as his own...but had never stopped longing for.

As his gaze met hers, Samantha's expression became shuttered. And as he glanced down at her body, he realized why. This woman who had haunted his dreams was visibly pregnant. Suddenly Nicholas's thoughts turned away from longing to a desperate need to know. Whose child did she carry? And had some of his hazy dreams been true - had there been a night they made baby?

No one blossoms more beautifully than a woman who's WITH CHILD.... And the right man for her will cherish the gift of love she brings.

The hero is a successful lawyer, in his thirties, who sees a young woman needing his help in court. In a matter of weeks they are married. She is an orphan and he had wealthy but selfish parents. He is blindsided by having a wife who wants a baby. She overhears him telling a friend that he made a mistake. She leaves and begins her life many miles away. She is broken-hearted. Months later she has to go to LA on business and goes by the lawyer’s office to sign divorce papers. He stb ex is there. He has a bad case of the flu and is on medication. Her car won’t start so he drives her to a restaurant where he drinks some wine. It interacts with the medication and he becomes woozy. She drives him home. In his nearly unconscious state they make love. He has no memory of it but she gets pregnant. She goes back home to continue her life. When she realizes she is pregnant she decides to have the baby alone. At some point she will tell him but not now. He comes to the area on business and brings her a necklace she lost. He thinks another man got her pregnant and wonders how he can leave her alone at this time. It all works out. This is a very cut and dried retelling of a very good book.

5 Stars ~ I love books that have an epilogue; and books that have a note to the reader from the author. This gem, has those wonderful elements plus a prologue that sweeps you into the world of Nicholas and Samantha. This is a love story of soul mates who knew each other instinctively yet managed to make a mess of their relationship. Ms. Wilson had me emotionally involved from the first pages right to the very last sentence. This is one for the keeper shelf. I'm already looking forward to reading it again :)

Dear Reader,

As a mother of three, I have always been struck by the power of babies to change their parents’ lives forever. Whether they are planned or a surprise, as tiny and helpless as they are, from the moment they exist, they profoundly alter the world around them.

In That Night We Made Baby, Samantha Wells is shocked, then thrilled to find herself pregnant with the child of her ex-husband, a man she will always love but knows she will never see again. Nicholas Viera believes he has the life he wants and needs. He knows where he’s going, what he wants, and is certain Samantha is his past, and children will never be a part of his future.

Little do both people know, but the “best-laid plans” of expectant parents are far from “set in stone.” What they think they want is no match for the tiny life that is a part of both of them, a life that comes with the ability to change or erase every plan they’ve made.

So, I invite you to share in the story of Samantha and Nicholas and a very unexpected baby who rearranges the future for all of them in That Night We Made Baby.

Not bad. Was okay.

This is my first book by this author.

I do like second chance stories, but this one was just so so for me. The couple meet, have a whirlwind two week courtship that leads to marriage.

As we see from the story they are barely 6 months together before they divorce. We dont get to see much of their married life except for reminiscing on both their parts and from what the reader can gather, they had different expectations.

It seems the husband only proposed because he was so in lust w the heroine but actually he never wanted a marriage or kids at all. The heroine hears his conversation with a friend and she is devastated. This leads her to ask for a divorce.

The heroine is an orphan who only wanted a home, a family and 2.5 kids. So its particularly painful for her to hear that her husband didnt love her, only wanted an affair and feels he was pressured into proposing more than he wanted. We do get glimpses of him missing her now that she has left so it seems he did care for her more than he let on.

They meet to sign the divorce papers. The husband is sick so is on medication, they have a drink together and with the mix of alcohol and drugs he is almost incapacitated so the heroine has to drive him home. They end up having sex, but in his confused daze the husband does not remember.

He goes to find her to return a locket and finds her pregnant. He thinks she was with someone else before their divorce so he is mad at this. They are both talking constantly at cross purposes because the heroine also knows that the Hero does not want kids (another point where they did not get along). The heroine is having a few issues with her pregnancy so the Hero stays around to help, he is worried about her even if he wont admit that he cares.

Their whole reunion happens in the second half of the book and spans 2-3 days before a random “life or death” situation forces the Hero to come to terms with his feelings and admit that he does love the heroine.

There is an epilogue where they are a family with a baby.

I just think it could have been better.

This was a “bookclub” read for me and some friends for the laughs. It was crap, but boy were we entertained.
