"The 7th century B.C. Greek lyric poet is the oldest lyric voice preserved for us." A sample of Archilochos: "I'm still alive thank god; to hell with the shield; I'll find me a better one soon." Also includes as appendix an essay "Hesiod's Transitional Version of Epic Demand." With bibliography & index.
We haven't much by Archilochos--or his near contemporary, Sappho--and this books has that little bit well translated so that the poet is accessible. Otherwise this book discusses the little we know of the man and his context.
