Synopsis: “The Enemy will tell you every lie imaginable to bring you to your knees…But I’m here to tell you that not one of those lies is true. God loves you more than you can possibly understand…” Singer songwriter Tasha Layton delivers a powerful in her book Look What You’ve Done. You’ll time travel through her childhood, high school, college, and young adult years with her as she explores the topic of hardship and the goodness of God. How does he fit into suffering? It’s an age-old question that I think we all long to be answered. Tasha’s memoir is sure to encourage you along the path God has for you.
Analysis: A few weeks ago I had the privilege of watching an interview and hearing Tasha Layton sing in person, and let me just tell you, wow. What a gift God has given to this beautiful woman! You’ll laugh with her, empathize with her, and learn from her as you read the story of what brought her to where she is today. This book will leave you inspired, encouraged, and excited to worship with her as she continues to grow her musical career.
In her book Tasha Layton invites us in her journey of healing and share about her music career. She tells us how God changed her life, healed her broken heart and open door in the music industry. After a breakup in her teenage years she drifted away from faith looking for God in other religions until God gently brought her back to him, He saved her life and show her how much He loved her. Tasha also talked about her experience in American Idol, touring with Katy Perry and how God prepared her for the season she is now in. Look what you’ve done is also a song in her beautiful album “How far”.
I received a copy of this book and this is an honest review.
3.5 ⭐️ In Look What You've Done, Tasha Layton (Christian singer of the song by the same name) shares her testimony of faith through stories of her life experiences accompanied by what she learned about God through them. Many of the lies that she believed and the truths she discovered about God were relatable and encouraging. There were a couple of chapters in particular that moved me deeply and reminded of me something about God that I really needed to hear. She addresses insecurity, comparison, waiting on God, mental health, trusting God with your dreams, and more with relatability, compassion, and truth.
I do wish that she had gone into more depth, both in explaining her story more thoroughly and in providing the Scriptural response. For example, I would have been interested to read more about her exploration of other religions and how she used her position on Katy Perry's tour to be a light for Christ (she mentioned that she believed God put her on the tour to be a light, but she didn't share about any specific circumstances in which she was able to do so). I would say that this book offers more of a cursory overview, and it felt a lot like a devotional-style book. I actually think it could be good for a small group or book club of teenage girls.
My one real complaint was the inclusion of several (often unnecessary) details about material possessions or worldly experiences. Much of the book was relatable, but these parts negated some of that. For example, in one sentence, she talks about her time in Israel enjoying food, music, and the beach, and then in the very next sentence, she describes how that experience gave her a feeling of security in her faith. Another example occurred later on in the book when she said she "needed" to go skydiving, backpacking, bungee jumping, etc. while she was young, before she got married and settled. This claim sounded really privileged to me, especially considering that many people have desires for adventure and will never be able to do these things. I'm happy for her that she was able to have these experiences, but I'm surprised she wasn't more sensitive to how this comes across seeing as she mentioned having tight finances in the earliest chapters. I guess it felt at times like she was trying to mix aspects of a celebrity memoir with Christian living, and these things didn't always mesh for me while reading.
Thank you, Dexterity, Tasha Layton, and Netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading this and the audiobook is narrated by Tasha. I loved the perspective and message conveyed in this book. Sometimes we forget there is purpose in the things we go through and as a Christian it's nice to know other Christians also go through similar struggles and helps you keep focus on God rather then the setbacks.
Solid 4.5 if not a smidge higher! Seeing how she overcame her struggles and to share her testimony of how God is working on her life was beautiful to read. She asks 3 questions at the end of every chapter, so I did this as a daily devotional! So empowering and motivating
An interesting autobiographical accounts of a Christian’s spiritual journey! Tasha Layton is open and honest in sharing the less than smooth road on hers. I appreciated her vulnerability in detailing the detours she took along her journey, and the formidable potholes. She offers some insights that proved to be helpful in getting her through these obstacles and back on the road successfully! It resounded with me and I connected with much of what she shares. Readers will identify with similar struggles.
However, the connection ended when the author perseverated on her singing career instead of how God taught her deep truths about the Christian journey. I was not interested in Kath Perry this and Kathy Perry that. Although the book included some practical helps and spiritual insights, it did not continue in that vein. Regrettably, she veered off from the premise of the book: sharing spiritual insights that helped her get out of the quagmire of “being stuck” and how counseling in Colorado provided her with the spiritual traction to get back on track. More effort could have been spent on her experiences in Colorado. She shared how much that experience helped her but it could have been developed more for readers.
This started off as a 5 star review for me. Losing the spiritual focus and instead branching off to talk about record contracts and Katy Perry was disappointing and brought the rating down considerably.
My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing this ARC so I can provide an unbiased review.
I really enjoyed this book by K-LOVE books. Love the song by Tasha Layton, there is so much about her I didn’t know. It shows her faith through the ups, downs and depression in her life and has some great insight in trusting in The Lord. Good Q&A at the end of each chapter.
In Look What You’ve Done, Tasha Layton has written down her personal story about her journey to become a songwriter and a Christian singer. This book covered her struggle with dealing with shame and feeling less than. She tried to bury her shame so deep that it wouldn’t ever come to the surface. She explained how this led to her hit song, same name as the title of this book. She was able to connect with God and let Him in her brokenness. In the book, she also touched on her auditioning for American Idol, eventually becoming a background singer for Katy Perry, leaving music, coming back to music, getting married, and having children.
She grew up in a small town in South Carolina and didn’t have many friends. Her family just couldn’t afford to participate in sports, dance, or any other fun group activities. She lived in a trailer and she explained how she wouldn’t invite kids over because she was afraid of being judged. She always believed that the other kids in nicer housed were just better people than her. Her parents worked hard to provide for them. She shared how she felt not beautiful enough and she didn’t think she had the right hairstyle. She had a deep fear of rejection and she strived to be perfect. She felt the seeds of comparison. This robs us of our identify and contentment. She revealed how gratitude is an important practice we need to put into place where it can change our perspective. We all need to learn to enjoy what we do have and not focus on what we don’t.
She shared a heartbreaking story about a bad nightmare she had that messed her up for years. This started because of an event at school that humiliated her. She was in first grade when they were all supposed to be taking turns reading out loud. She needed to go to the bathroom and the teacher thought she was trying to get out of her turn. When it was time for her to read, she wet herself in front of the whole classroom. She was laughed at and sent to the bathroom located in the classroom. The teacher was annoyed and left her in their until it was time to go home. This led her to believe the lie that she was a bad child who deserved punishment. She also opened up about how she was called one of them Chia Pets because of her leg hair. She was embarrassed and she made a vow to never to be made fun of again. She went home and shaved her own legs and ended up cutting her legs and leaving behind a scar. This shared all of these personal stories where readers can understand that, “our memories inform who we become”. The real enemy is very good at planting lies and reinforcing them and disguise them as truths. In the book, she walks readers through how she received counseling and was able to heal and move forward.
I would recommend this awesome book about Christian artist, Tasha Layton. I have only recently listened to her music became a fan of her voice and now her story. One of my first songs I heard of her was a song she sung with Josh Wilson. I then listened to her other songs and she has an incredible voice range and her lyrics are life changing. I intensely connected with her story and I appreciated how real she was in sharing her brokenness, the lies we are believing, and shame. I really didn’t like how she was treated in school and church. Fans will be shocked to her about her teenage boyfriend mother experience and how she treated her. I was in awe in reading about her struggle with wanting to end it all at the lowest moment of her life during her collage life and feeling miserable but thank God she is still her changing lives.
I found myself deeply moved by her journey of faith and self-discovery, inspired by her powerful song of the same title. Tasha's narrative takes readers on a captivating journey from her humble beginnings in small-town South Carolina to her exhilarating experiences as a background singer on stage with Katy Perry, and ultimately to the mission field in Kenya and beyond. Throughout her adventures, Tasha poignantly highlights the unwavering presence of God amidst life's highs and lows.
What struck me most about Tasha's story is her candidness in sharing the struggles she faced on her journey of faith and music. She bravely confronts issues such as comparison, self-image, and the search for purpose, offering readers relatable insights into the lies she once believed and the truths God revealed to her along the way. Through Tasha's experiences, readers are encouraged to discern God's truth from the world's lies, find freedom and identity in Jesus, and grow in boldness in prayer.
One aspect of the book that particularly resonated with me was Tasha's emphasis on embracing seasons of waiting and trusting in God's timing. In a world filled with uncertainty, her words serve as a beacon of hope, reminding readers to see God's miracles in their own lives and to live boldly as Christians.
Overall, "Look What You've Done" is a compelling and uplifting read that challenges readers to deepen their faith, embrace their identity in Christ, and share the goodness of God with others. Tasha Layton's journey is a testament to the transformative power of God's love and the freedom found in living out His truth.

Tasha Layton is a well-known Contemporary Christian singer. After competing as a contestant on American Idol, she went on to become a backup singer for her guest judge, Katy Perry. Deciding to leave the limelight behind, she returned to her roots as worship leader. Through a series of events, that could only be orchestrated by God, she landed a record deal and topped the charts with her hit song Look What You’ve Done.
In her testimonial, Look What You’ve Done, Tasha reflects on all the ways the Lord has worked in her life. She offers Biblical advice, hand picked verses (related to each topic), and study questions. This is a book that be consumed alone, in pairs, or with large groups.
Reviewing a memoir is always tricky! I want to respectful of Tasha and honor what she went through. I commend her for opening up about personal subject matter like mental health and infertility. I think too often Christians are encouraged to pray away their problems instead of seek professional help. Tasha is an advocate for counseling and therapy. That in an of itself was refreshing. My only complaint is that while she touched on important subjects, she kept it fairly surface level. She skimmed over things instead of diving deeper.
*If you are looking for a testimonial that isn’t afraid to go deep, I highly recommend Mandisa’s Out of the Dark!!!
Special thanks to Netgalley, Tasha Layton, and Dexterity/ K-Love Books for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I heard the author speak as a guest on a podcast about her inspiration for the song “Look What You’ve Done” and I was deeply moved by her testimony. I assumed this book would be an extension of that story.
I wanted to love this book. I didn’t like this book. I would recommend the podcast I heard. I would not recommend this book.
I don’t want to discredit what God has done in her life. I believe her story is an important one. However, the delivery of her story (in book form) was disappointing for me as a reader. I felt as though she spent a lot of time speaking about circumstances, life experiences, seasonal logistics, and a lot of sharing what was happening in her world on the exterior. And all of that isn’t wrong or bad in and of itself.
I just expected the impact of her story would be found in the heart transformation she experienced through what God has done. I wish we heard more about that.
I will say, I’m in my late 30s. I see Tasha as a peer. I chose to follow Jesus at 14 years old and looking back I do think this book would have been a great experience to read as a young adult + baby Christian. So for that reason, while I wouldn’t recommend it to a friend, I would recommend it to a teenager. I think teen girls need role models and examples like Tasha, and do think they would thoroughly enjoy this book.
I absolutely loved this book by Christian music artist Tasha Layton! Tasha takes us along on the journey as she revisits key moments and periods throughout her life that brought her closer to God. Even though Tasha walks a unique path in the spotlight now, her story is incredibly relatable. Her life hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows, but she's persevered through her trials and now uses her experiences and gifts to light others' paths.
In this book she does a wonderful job of not only chronicling her life but also helping her audience learn the lessons she herself learned—in particular, that God is with us every single step of the way—through the wonderful, the horrible, and everything in between. The questions she includes at the end of each chapter also help the reader reflect on his/her own life. Her vulnerability paired with her beautiful writing kept me eager to read more.
I highly recommend this book—especially to Christians and/or anyone else seeking a story that details how following the little nudges from the universe can bring forth great blessings. Reading and engaging with this book can be a truly transformative experience.
Tasha Layton takes readers on a journey through the hills and valleys of her life growing up in small town South Carolina, all the way to present day internationally known Christian worship artist. Time and time again showing the many times God restored the brokenness and spoke truth over the lies of the enemy. I was not only encouraged to read of God’s faithfulness but also challenged to seek the Father fervently, believing that He will show up as promised.
I’ve recently rededicated my life to Christ, so Tasha’s story was like a balm for my heart. I’m more excited to see what amazing things Jesus will bring about in my life for His glory. Thanks to this memoir, I’ll remember to keep track of all the ways God redeems all the brokenness in me and how to seek out His voice through all the noise.
Highly recommend for anyone looking to take their walk with Christ that much deeper! Or even if you’re new to Christianity, this would be a perfect place to see how God works everything for good.
Look What You've Done written by Tasha Layton was such an inspirational novella. It was so beautiful, raw, pure, truthful, and heart breaking that I had to read it in one sitting. As a Christian myself, this novella shredded my heart to pieces. Tasha would talk to God in her hardest times and He wouldn't answer her calling, but some days He just appeared out of nowhere. In Look What You've Done, Tasha shares her journey of finding God in both the lows and the highs. Inspired by the song she wrote, the same as the title of this book, it delves into Tasha's journey of finding freedom in Jesus through life's twists and turns. Tasha has inspired me so much with this beautiful novella, she was so vulnerable with her readers, and some of her stories truly broke my heart. I love how at the end of every single chapter, Tasha added reflection questions. Look What You've Done helps inspire readers to walk in boldness and love, sharing the goodness of God revealed in your life. Tasha shares so many heartbreaking moments of when she turned to God, but He let her make her own decisions when she just needed guidance. Tasha will continue to be an inspiration to whoever reads her book, so please do yourself a favor and pick up this novella immediately.
"To the God who rescued me and turned my ashes to beauty- May I always place my trust in You".
I cannot recommend this book enough! It is so genuine, inspiring, and powerful! I really appreciate Tasha’s openness as she shares her story. Not only will you experience her journey, but you will take your own as you engage in the questions at the end of each chapter. There are so many times we can feel alone or stuck during our journey. Tasha helps us to see, as she herself learned, that God is right there with us, every step of the way writing a beautiful story for us. He uses every chapter of our journey, even the hard ones, to help us grow closer to him. We can be free from the lies that have taken root in our life. She shows how this was possible for her, and can be possible for each one of us as well. This book has greatly impacted me and opened up a new path of healing. Thank you Tasha Layton for how you selflessly use your time and talents to help others and glorify God! I was blessed to be one of the people to receive an advanced reader copy of the book, and this is my honest review.
Tasha Layton strikes a chord with every person who has ever faced insecurities, Christian and Non-Christian alike.
Tasha Layton’s new devotional leads us through her life, and her growth in the Lord in each stage of that life. It’s twenty-four chapters of relatable situations complete with Bible verses and discussion questions.
This is not a deep Bible study. It’s not a thick theological thesis. What it is, is one woman sharing her spiritual journey with the hope that it might help someone else. Layton has learned, through her circumstances, to accept the unconditional love of God and she wants others to learn what she has. God loves you.
This book is for everyone who has ever questioned their worth; questioned God’s love for them; questioned who they are. This book was for me and I think it could be for you too.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this title. All opinions are my own.
Again, I do not keep up with many famous people, including Christian artists, so I was pleasantly surprised and inspired as I read her authentic account of her life, her fears and all the struggles she went thru to get to where she is today. And God gets the credit for keeping her alive and drawing her back into a relationship with Him. What a testimony, what a voice, what a great song as to the title of her book, I would recommend this to anyone searching for answers and trying to overcome the fears and lies that we are told by others or by ourselves. Her three simple questions at the end of each chapter are actually very thoughtful and should be helpful to those that take the time to reflect.
3.5 stars. I first heard about Tasha through her music and ironically her song Look What You've Done. When I saw this ARC available I jumped at the opportunity. Although I did enjoy learning about her background, her testimony, and her overall growth as a Christian I was a little disappointed in the shallowness of it. I was hoping for something deeper and with a little more substance. This felt more like a devotional with very short chapters, guided questions, and minimal scripture. Despite this being a little more bland than what I expected from a worship leader, I would still recommend this book to others.
Wow, Tasha shares so much of her life and God’s hand in it all. I was so engaged through all of the book and loved reading about her story. I have personally been so encouraged by her music and writing especially when I was struggling with postpartum depression and grief. Her song, “Look What You’ve Done” came on the radio and I thought I want to be able to sing this song one day and mean these words. It was a moment I will always remember. I felt like God gave me hope in that moment. Now when I listen, I sing with all my heart because God truly has set me free and is using my story for others. Thank you Tasha.
This book is impactful, as is the song of the same name. Tasha Layton takes the reader on a journey through some of her life experiences and details how God came alongside her in every situation, weaving her stories with the word of God. She details struggles, trauma, and hurt as well as adventures, excitement and triumphs. In each chapter, she offers advice and encourages readers to go deeper in their own unique journeys of self-reflection of what God has done in their lives. Look What You’ve Done is an example of the transformation that anyone who trusts in God can attain. The book is read by her in the audible version, which makes it an even more enjoyable experience!
Oh my this book is so good for the soul! You join Tasha’s journey through her life and her life choices, and it’s so relatable. It really pulls at your heart strings! Each chapter ends with questions and makes you dive deep, things I didn’t realize that sculpted me into the person I am today. This book has helped with closure for me and helped me with self healing. Thank you so much, Tasha, for being so vulnerable and sharing your story with us! Through you, we are able to be better as humans and Christians.
ARC read through NetGalley, all opinions are my own. I was super excited to read this book because the album that the song Look What You’ve Done is on is one of my favorites right now. It was good, I thought that Tasha had a lot of good things to say about trusting God and listening to God and remembering that your current situation can change. I also liked how there were reflection questions at the end of each chapter. The season of life I’m in right now is definitely one of realizing how far I have come and seeing where God was through all of it, and this book really helped me with that.
Tasha Layton shares her personal stories of hurt and pain, but she doesn’t stop there. She invites the reader into the healing process that she revisits time and time again. Allowing God to purpose her pain, she encourages the reader to surrender their own struggles and experiences to the Only One who can bring peace and comfort. The end of each chapter provides some thought-provoking questions for personal reflection.
I loved this book. I don't have any fancy, well put together words about it but I'll say this - it spoke to my heart.
Tasha Layton's songs always hit my heart. Funny how Look What You've Done was the song I chose as my birthday theme song. Reading this book has helped me see my life through a newer lens and is making me brave enough to talk to God about certain things.
A great read for anyone struggling to blot out the lies the world tells us about ourselves and who we are in Gods eyes. Tasha reveals her struggles from a young child to find her worth and purpose in life, having done the hard work of counseling and letting go and letting God to bring her to the place she is today. It is a reminder to all of us that no matter where we are in life if we trust him God is always in the midst, writing the script.
Part autobiography and part devotional Tasha Layton weaves stories throughout her life with scripture. At the end of each chapter she has scripture sgd reflection questions so you can apply truths to your own life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I love Tasha’s music so I want more! Definitely recommend!
