Paul J Bennett (b. 1961) emigrated from England to Canada in 1967. His father served in the British Royal Navy, and his mother worked for the BBC in London. As a young man, Paul followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the Canadian Armed Forces in 1983. He is married to Carol Bennett and has three daughters who are all creative in their own right.

Paul’s interest in writing started in his teen years when he discovered the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons (D & D). What attracted him to this new hobby was the creativity it required; the need to create realms, worlds and adventures that pulled the gamers into his stories.

In his 30’s, Paul started to dabble in designing his own roleplaying system, using the Peninsular War in Portugal as his backdrop. His regular gaming group were willing victims, er, participants in helping to playtest this new system. A few years later, he added additional settings to his game, including Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic, World War II, and the all-important Fantasy Realm where his stories take place.

The beginnings of his first book ‘Servant to the Crown’ originated over five years ago when he began a new fantasy campaign. For the world that the Kingdom of Merceria is in, he ran his adventures like a TV show, with seasons that each had twelve episodes, and an overarching plot. When the campaign ended, he knew all the characters, what they had to accomplish, what needed to happen to move the plot along, and it was this that inspired to sit down to write his first novel.

Paul now has four series based in his fantasy world of Eiddenwerthe and is looking forward to sharing many more books with his readers over the coming years.

It's been awhile since I've written a review but I felt I needed to let others know.

Positives: world building is good, gets you aware of the way magic works, the church with it's six sections, the various types of political problems etc.

Negative: the dialogue and story feels childish? Overly detailed but the wrong details. I wish I could explain this better but I just felt that the author needed to edit the dialogue to be smoother.

Negative: lack of action. I get these are the start of the series but do not expect action beyond short fights.

I was pulled in by the decent reviews and the idea that one credit for two books was a decent deal -- I'm surprised that I finished to be honest. Enjoy the story if you want!

Having recently finished the first 8 books in the Crown series, I was eager to find other books by this talented storyteller. Little did I realize how much more than “other” books I would discover: Rather a growing collection of people, places and events that further fleshed out an amazing world. I highly recommend you also read the character “prequels” that follow book two. I almost skipped them thinking”Hey, I already know where the story goes”, but, as with “Battle by the River” from the Crown series, I found the “prequel” really enhanced my feeling for the various characters. I will be extremely sad to run out of new books by this wonderful author.

I was hopeful at first since the cover looks cool (yes that's how I select my books). The book immediately started off with two characters and the viewpoint alters between them. This makes it all the more harder to get a grip on the main characters since they aren't really even introduced at first. Their world views, feelings, fears or hopes aren't really brought up or when they are they have no emotion behind them.
Dialogue in the book is wooden and it similarly suffers from lack emotion. Its also structured as question-answer question-answer type of dialogue which doesn't make it anymore flowing. I also noticed someone saying that the conversations are childish and I understand what they mean by that. It might have been expedient to write everything so that every answer is just around the corner but it just doesn't sound good. It leaves a lot of things unexplored as the story dashes on.
Then when there is some emotion mainly love it happens incredible and unbelievably fast considering the social customs of the book. Its like this "hey you look cute!" "want to get married?"
Im probably going to read this series through but the first impression has been pretty rough.

Not too sure what these other people are talking about. I read eight hours in, and there was one action scene and a short one at that.

They call it a frozen flame because it's a dull, slow burn.

Kind of wondering if these other reviews are paid since they do not reflect the book at all.

This was pretty good! This was another free Audible book that I went through, so I had no knowledge about either the author or the story. The publisher pack contains the first two novels as well as a couple of short stories set before the first novel, which generally goes through how our two main characters got to where they were at the start of the adventure.

I'd call this one a fun YA series. It contains the general elements that are in a lot of those novels of late: a 'magic school', the lost race of people, the nobody rising to great heights, orcs/dwarves/elves, plots foiled by unlikely sources. I won't say there is anything groundbreaking here, but in my opinion, it worked. Sometimes you want a book that contains just enough suspense (but not too much!) to keep you interested while also knowing things are likely to work out in the end. At least through two books, that fits the bill here.

I cannot help but wonder about Bennett and whether he has religious aversions. The Church plays a significant role in both novels and there is some not so subtle indications about the fallibility of religion.

The two main characters are a peasant girl who was brought to a magic school at age 10 - the youngest ever to display such magical ability. Of course, she is super powerful because otherwise it wouldn't be as much fun. On the other hand, we have a woodsman whose people were conquered by the ruling empire and are mostly dying out. A tragedy at the start of the book sets his story in motion as he discovers new things about himself. By the end of the first book, we get information that answers a big question and by the end of the second, we have both an answer to a question since book one as well as what likely will be the inspiration for book three.

Final Verdict: 3.8 out of 5

Nothing new here, but pretty well executed and I have to say that many of the characters are quite enjoyable. I probably should review this one higher, but at the same time, I would have liked to have seen more novelty. Nevertheless, if you are a fan of the YA fantasy genre, you'll likely enjoy this. Caveat: there is plenty of violence so if that is not your thing, I would avoid.

i read books one and 2 not the prequel. I really enjoyed book one the 2 main characters learn magic in basically opposite circumstances and i enjoyed the world building from both POVs. I was expecting the first book to be focusing on the process of learning magic and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of adventure and action that the characters had in the second half of this book. according to my amazon purchase history this book was read in a week :). I would rate book one as a five.
Then i bought books 2 and 3 at the same time and was disappointed that book 2 had some slower bits that at times made it difficult to get through. My main critique is that book 2 focused on a mystery more than the sword and sorcery adventure that was in book one. I do not read many books in this genre but was willing to try. i don't know how much practice the author has with this genre so I'm not trying to be overly critical but the main annoyance was that in one chapter the MCs would find a clue , discuss the possible meanings, and figure out how it fit in the mystery. Then in the next chapter they would return to the city and rehash everything I just read for a side character. This happened like 3 separate times and made it seem like the author thought the reader was dumb or something. When you find these bits i would recommend skimming and/ or skipping the scene because you wont miss much. Otherwise book 2 was fine it just took me a couple weeks to finish instead. i would rate at 4/3.5 depending on how harsh you want to be about that issue. it alos felt like Natalia was lecturing Athgar at points because of her more official education in magic and politics. i believe this dynamic is fixed in later books and makes the dialog more enjoyable.
HOWEVER because i got the next book i was determined to finish and did not regret it at all. Book 3 reverted to the sword and sorcery/ adventure that i wanted and added a bit of political drama and military's tactics. i finished book 3 in about the same time as book 1 and just finished book 4 this morning. i would highly recommend. In fact i just had the rest of them sent to my kindle 5 minutes ago.

Ashes, bk 1:
5*
Interesting, engrossing story about a girl, Natalia, trained from youth as a water mage - who has unknown origins. It appears that mage hunters kidnap or purchase from their families, lowborn children with potential. (However, the noble families breed for such potential and are happy to have offspring in the academies). She graduates as the most powerful mage in her class, and finds out that the ruling family of the water mages, the Stormborns, plan to marry her off, so she can breed more mages. She manages to run away. Meanwhile, Athgar, a hunter, is rescued from his burning village by orc friends, who train him in the ways of being a fire mage. Most of his fellow villagers, including his sisters, were captured and sold as slaves. He sets out to find them. He crosses paths with Natalya, and their quests continue! Hers, to remain free, and his, to find his sisters. The action is nonstop. You will very quickly be drawn into their story. I have book two, so I’m happy I can continue binge-reading. I enjoyed the world building. The narration was excellent.

I listened in the audible library, for free.

Embers, book 2
5*
This book takes place where the Orcs live. Athgar and Natalia journey north to warn their friends of the impending attack. Lots of action ensues.

I liked these books a lot. maybe 4 1/2 stars because, who is perfect? As a fan of fantasy, sci-fi and paranormal cozy mysteries (perhaps being a man has something to do with it?), I don't mind the romantic aspect, but it really puts me off when I have to read (or more likely skip over) page after page of inane prose about how manly the love interest is. This book has some romance, but it isn't obnoxious (IMO.)
I genuinely like the characters and care what happens to them.
Another pet peeve is when the protagonist(s) are dismissive of (or even afraid to acknowledge) their talents ad nauseum. Not so here, they are discovering new powers and not afraid to change their opinions and habits.
I like the magic system.

Ashes: Book One
Lots of action and the use of magic to get Natalia and Athgar out of danger time and time again. Their foes become stronger and stronger. Will their magic be enough to overcome them? A gripping tale across the continent with lots of different foes seeking their lives.

Embers: Book Two
Natalie and Athgar continue to pursue their own safety. Even so, when they discover a plot, they have to decide whether to stay hidden or to risk their safety and their lives for friends. Lots of mystery, following the clues, lots of action and danger. Will they survive to fight again? Spellbinding read from beginning to end.

An original way of combining the themes of mages controlling the elements of fire and water; different groups of intelligent species sharing the planet; interspecies tolerance and intolerance and a love story. The central characters, both human: one, with affinity to fire, who has been adopted into an orc tribe; the other, a powerful water mage, taken from a peasant village to be trained at an elite academy; are forced to travel seeking allies against the combined forces of extremist magicians and religious leaders who see them as threats to their plans. An enjoyable and exciting story, suitable for all ages.

Exceptional Epic Fantasy

Swords, sorcery, power, politics, this box set has a bit of everything you could want. Rich world building, likeable protagonists that question their actions' ramifications before charging into battle. Fight scenes are strategically planned but always with a burst of natural chaos that leads the heroes in unexpected directions. Overall a very enjoyable read with the only thing possibly missing is a unique language system for orcish and dwarven , although to be fair this would have been very time-consuming and likely to be axed by most editors.

I really loved this pack of books 1 and 2 of the Frozen Flame and I have posted reviews for each book individually. I highly recommend this series to those who love epic fantasy with magic thrown in and a whole lot of political intrigue and a corrupt church influence. the characters are extremely young, courageous and very in love and so much fun to join on their adventures as they strive to keep each other save as well as those they care for. The main protagonists are a flame wielder and a water mage. Enjoy, I sure did!

Help me read more books

Interesting fantasy tale. This collection covers the first two books of the series, plus some prequel material. Good fantasy, along with the ever present running from authorities, ducking killers, and of course, discovering their powers. It's certainly a tale that's been told before, but this one has that something special, that flare, that makes the story very enjoyable. I'm certainly going to read more in this series when I can. If you're a fantasy fan, this collection will provide plenty of enjoyment.

Paul Bennett has done it again! The Frozen Flames series continues to excite with a page turners , consisting of stories continuing the saga of main characters
Natalia and Athgar seeking a place to live
peacefully in a world bent on war and power
struggles. Through their unique abilities as both
diplomats and mages they craft alliances among
tribes and races don't normally trust each other. I would recommend these books to anyone who enjoys a cracking story against a light fantasy background!

Fantastic two books, Great story and character development. Very easy to read and lots of more unanswered questions for the rest of the series to go into. The magic system is very interesting but not overly complicated with drawbacks to using magic and mages having limitations not making them all over powered beings. A bit of political intrigue and mystery elements as well. Overall it is a great read that I would recommend to anyone.

Another Paul J. Bennett masterpiece

I have read some of Mr. Bennett's work, and it has been great, so it was no surprise to me when I read Awakening and fell in love with all of it: the premise, the characters, and, of course lots of my favorite M&M (Magic and Mayhem).

Now I have to finish this series so I can see where Mr. Bennett takes us from here!

If you enjoy this genre, you're going to love this series!

Dont you hate it when you have a great plan of kidnapping, and it just doesn't happen like it is suposed to?! There were many twists and turns and the plot changes here and there, new people are on your side, and it is SO HARD to NOT read another chapter! Yes, it was a great book! Thank you Mr. Paul J. Bennett for another great read!

Fate brings Athgar and Natalia together in a quest for revenge against the men who ravaged his home and stole his sister and tribe into slavery. Saved by the Orcs and his powers revealed, he and Natalia learn as they go and their powers are honed against their enemies to beat the odds and continue their adventures together as a couple. Enjoyable reading with good plot and characters.

The story of athgar and Natalia is one of resilience and perseverance
Each has their own story of where they came from. They meet and become a pair who want to do good. Natalia is a water mage and athgar
Has become a fire user trained by the orcs. They fight with the orcs and win and their story continues

The story has potential, but the writing was a bit amateurish and redundant in my opinion. An example being that after every character said a sentence, it was followed by “he said”, “she explained”, “he asked” etc. It broke up the conversation instead of having it roll smoothly which became cumbersome.

The characters themselves were likable, but the story was a bit slow moving.

Epic trilogy with prequels

Loved that two completely different mages come together. There was humor in the way they met. Humor was sprinkled througout the books along with the battles, both personal and with their enemies. The epic battle at the end was a real page turner. Natalia and Athgar are very likable and both rise above their histories.

I have submitted reviews for each title contained within this series set box after listening to the audiobook of this title.
Each review can be found on the individual title's pages.

I suggest that the third book on this title actually be listened to first to get the full benefit of this great tale.

That was dull. I fell asleep quite a few times. Additionally, I don't know how many more times in a short conversation that I could take "he said.... she said....". There are different ways to make conversation flow, and that is not one of them.

A good collection of stories start this series. I really wish the author had put them in chronological order. It helps the flow quite a bit if read that way.

In spite of that, the character building, the action, the intrigue are all there. Definitely a good read.

This was an adventure that kept me intrigued from start to finish. The characters were engrossing and the world was built beautifully throughout. It was exciting to watch the characters develop their skills and get to know each other, whilst their ultimate mission was always very clear.

The Frozen Flame

The story isn't bad but the writing left a lot to be desired. Whoever did the editing and proofreading should be fired. Using current real world quotes didn't fit in the fantasy setting. Doubt I will purchase the rest of the series but only time will tell.
