The story of Isobel and her husband John, their heart for the unreached people in remote parts of China and their willingness to undergo great hardships for the sake of the gospel was inspiring. The three star rating is because the writing style and overall storytelling narrative could be greatly improved. I'm now intrigued to read some of Isobel's own works on the Lisu people.
A classic tale of traditional missions, told in the traditional missionary biography way. I would have preferred to hear more about John Kuhn and the couple’s trials and perseverance instead of focusing primarily on Belle. I believe the books Isobel wrote are actually better written.
Great story with a lot of great life lessons to share. I thought a lot after about the Jesus demon story, and shared about it with my Sunday school class. The writing is a bit disjointed in places, but it's worth reading!
Amazing testimony of a woman's courage to journey into lands that must have been terrifying and daunting. The Lord's power working in her life was clear and evident.
Isobel Kuhn has touched my heart and encouraged me deeply in the service of our Lord. The best thing about this book is that it encouraged me to read the writings of Isobel Kuhn. They are rich resources for learning to be fishers of men and women.
If you can only read one of Kuhn's books, read Green Leaf in Drought (which is not even about her). However if you want a rich blessing start with In the Arena and Nests Above the Abyss. You will not be disappointed, but you will be challenged!
Isobel was a weakly but surrendered servant that the Lord used mightily. Through the trials of the difficult missionary work she obviously grew in her intimacy and knowledge of her Lord. Her writings bring experiences from a different time and isolated culture, and show how the love of Jesus touches people universally.
I had never really known about Isobel Kuhn until I found this book. It was very informative and easy to read.
The only thing that bugged me was the relationship between John and Isobel. There wasn't much said about it and it seemed like John was constantly away doing work in other villages. It almost seemed like they didn't have the same ministry. But it may have just been written that way because the book is supposed to be about Isobel. Not sure...
This was such a good book.Isobel's faith was amazing, she learned to listen to God and serve others. Isobel Kuhn found a strength in herself she never knew was there. This book made me relize how lucky I am to have good health and in general an easy life. Her story encouraged me to want to serve God even more.
