I’ve been a writer for over 15 years now, but it wasn’t planned!
I had a variety of jobs, including secretary, trainee buyer at Harrods, dental nurse, production assistant in a reprographic and printing company and various others.
I began to write after joining a creative writing class. I had no success with article writing, or short stories, or fiction, but the first children’s story I wrote, for a magazine called Twinkle, was accepted for publication. Hooray!!!
Things snowballed and a lot (yes lots and lots) of hard work later I now write full time and have over 50 books published. I still go to the same writing class and we have become a big happy family of writers!
For me, writing is the best job ever. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. I love to create worlds for young children to enjoy and escape into – whether the stories are educational, bedtime, problem solving or just plain good fun. It’s also very exciting to see the first picture roughs, as my wonderful, talented illustrators bring the text to life.
I live on the Essex coast in a lovely two-bed-roomed flat, which I share with my husband, Michael. At long last I have an office to write in, with room for all my books and bits of scribbled on papers.
The seafront is (still) just around the corner, and I find a bracing walk (it gets freezing when the East wind blows from the North Sea!) or gentle stroll when the weather is warmer, is great for clearing my head and mulling over story ideas.
Anyone who knows me can tell you that I love children's picture books. Not only do I enjoy reading them for Story Time at work, I also write my own - which I am hoping to get published one day. So, I unashamedly collect them. I don't even use the excuse that I hope to have grandkids one day - although they will come in handy when that happens. I just like cute little stories with soft, gentle illustrations. Hence, I have a number of them on my Amazon wishlist. My son plucked this one from the list as a stocking filler for me for Christmas. I love it. The illustrations are adorable. I really love the soft, pastel shades rather than the brash harsh colours of a lot of modern stories. The 'story' - if it can be said to have one - deals with the animals settling down to sleep after a busy day, in simple rhymes that children will love and parents will find easy to read. A winner for any nursery.
My son and I read lots of books together everyday and always save this one for last. It's smooth rythym and great pictures do the trick of puting him to sleep. It's amazing to watch!
I bought this sweet book to read to my three year old grandson at bedtime when he's visiting me. He absolutely loved it and he pointed to the pictures in the book as I read it and told me what each animal was and to each of the bugs too. I have actually read this book to him at least once every weekend when he is visiting and he can tell me things about this book before I read them now. We both really enjoy this book each time we read it.
A very simple book best for young kids, this book uses calming, rhyming text to present a story of many different animals across the savanna environment getting ready for bed and going to sleep.
Wonderful bedtime story for your little person! Using baby animals and sweet text everyone will enjoy this book. This would be a perfect baby shower and or birthday gift for a child.
A wonderful bedtime book! My daughter loved having this book read to her as a baby, now at 2 years old she still enjoys it, as does her baby brother. The illustrations are soft and soothing pastel watercolors, and the the text is clever and rhyming for a smooth and easy read. This book is such a favorite and read so much, I don't even need to look at the text anymore to read this book to my little ones.
Updated Review from my Materials 0-4 blog, 2/6/13: Snuggle Up, Sleep Ones introduces wild baby animals such as giraffes, zebras, elephants, and lions as they snuggle up and go to sleep for the night. The story is short and sweet with only one or two rhyming lines for each baby animal as they prepare for sleep. The descriptive rhyming text is paired with soothing, soft, pastel illustrations of the various wild baby animals and their surroundings. With its calming colors and soothing rhyming sound, this bedtime story will help little ones wind down from their busy day and snuggle up for sleep as the wild baby animals do.
Age Recommendation:
I would recommend this book for newborn through age 3 years.
Print Motivation: Encourages print motivation by being an enjoyable and sweet bedtime story for the youngest of babies up through toddlers.
Vocabulary: Encourages vocabulary learning through the various animals and objects mentioned in the text and pictured in the illustrations throughout the book.
Print Awareness: The text is short, only one or two sentences per each 2-page spread, and placed in areas where it is easily recognizable and un-obscured.
Narrative Skills: The short, rhyming, and simple text is easy for older babies and toddlers to learn and follow along with when read-aloud.
Phonological Awareness: Allows phonological awareness through the rhyming and descriptive words and sounds throughout the book.
Snuggle Up, Sleepy Ones Pre-K – 1st grade The text is simple yet provoking. It has great descriptive language, for example “Through wild, waving grasses shy antelope roam”. The author also uses rhyming at the end of each sentence. Therefore, each page consists of two sentences or phases, in which the last word of each rhymes. The illustrator, Macnaughton, does a wonderful job making the illustration peaceful and inviting. The animals and surrounding look natural and realistic, but have again that whimsical feathered look about them. The colors used are all appropriate for the scene and none are overpowering or intense. This book would appeal to children in pre-k to 1st grade because the subject matter is very simple and the animals are a subject matter that always seems to captivate children of this age. Again the illustrator uses family dynamic in this book to correlate to the text. I truly thought these books illustrated by Macnaughton were great! I loved the warmth of the colors and peacefulness of the pictures. The illustrations just made you want to keep looking at them! Classroom Connection: Again I would use this in language arts for word usage and picking out the rhyming words. I would also use a graphic organizer to find the animals that are asleep compared to the animals that are awake.
Mommy Bookworm’s Thoughts: This is a very cute book with wonderful illustrations for anyone who loves animals! I think that even toddlers would enjoy the book because of the illustrations even though they couldn’t read the text. It shows the love of families through cute wild animals, which pulls at my heartstrings since I love animals!!
Dahlia Bookworm’s Thoughts: I like the cute pictures because they show the mom (or dad) and the baby animal. I like how the author wrote different things for each of the animals. I can easily read it by myself. I would recommend it to kids my age and younger.
Daisy Bookworm’s Thoughts: I like the illustrations. I like how it showed a lot of different animals. I especially like the pictures of the baby animals. I could easily read this book & would recommend it to other kids my age and younger.
All of the animals, from the bold leopard to the shy antelope, snuggle down for the night, ready to sleep, in this charming book. The baby hippo cuddles up close for a big hippo hug while the porcupines curl up together in one spiky ball. This soothing rhyme, illustrated with glowing pastels, is the perfect bedtime story for a child worn out by a busy day.
The pastel illustrations are lovely, and definitely the large draw for this book. In particular, I liked the gradual shift in the sky from page to page--moving progressively toward the darkness of night.
The rhyming text is basically what you expect from a sweet toddler bedtime book about animals going to sleep. It's nice enough, but nothing super special. But it is a nice bedtime book when you do want something sweet and snuggly to read to your little one.
This has become mine and my daughters new night time book. She likes the cadence of the rhymes and it lends itself to adding my own inflection that she finds humorous. I love the sleepy little smiles it gets from her as she has her night time bottle. The illustrations are full of rich, vibrant colors and lots of animals which I can only imagine catch her attention as well.
Snuggle Up, Sleepy Ones is great story to read before naptime or bed. It is rich with adjectives provide descriptive imagery. It also includes a variety of different animals that one would find in the wild environment of a savannah or grasslands. This book is great for poetry. It includes many great rhyming words.

What a great bedtime story! This book illustrates how different animals cuddle up and snuggle when they go to sleep. Each page has a short rhyming poem. After reading it wil my son, he was ready to snuggle up and go to bed! (What a miracle!) This book is beautifully illustrated and great to get you little ones read to go to bed.
