1 Corinthians

Rate this book
For hundreds of years Christendom has been blessed with Bible commentaries written by great men of God highly respected for their godly walk and their insight into spiritual truth. The Crossway Classic Commentaries series presents the very best work on individual Bible books, carefully adapted for maximum understanding and usefulness for today's believers. The apostle Paul's epistles to the church at Corinth are masterpieces of spiritual truth applied to crises within the church―crises of both belief and practice. In his first letter Paul gives the Corinthian believers an honest inventory of their spiritual strengths and weaknesses―fully gifted and yet divided; believing foundational Gospel truth and yet condoning immorality and doctrinal distortions―and urges them to fully commit themselves to Christ. This classic commentary is a treasure for all who desire a closer walk with God. Whether used for supplementary reading or for careful study, it will prove profitable to every follower of Christ who opens his or her heart to its gems.

Charles Hodge (1797–1878) was an important Presbyterian theologian and principal of Princeton Theological Seminary between 1851 and 1878. He was a leading exponent of the Princeton theology, an orthodox Calvinist theological tradition in America during the 19th century. He argued strongly for the authority of the Bible as the Word of God. Many of his ideas were adopted in the 20th century by Fundamentalists and Evangelicals.

Super useful. Hodge is onto it.

Was fascinated by the view of speaking in tongues that he argues against (one apparently v. similar to my own). Don't know what that means for the typical story must people have of tongues and how it's historically been defined.

I found this commentary to be helpful in gaining a better understanding of the message of 1 Corinthians. I did not always receive all the answers to my questions, but in most cases, Charles Hodge explained the text very well, writing on the meaning of certain Greek words and making reference to other biblical passages. I also found the English language in the book somewhat easier to read than the language used in the English translation of Calvin's commentary on Romans.

I actually own the commentary on both 1 and 2 Corinthians published by Sovereign Grace Publishers. Charles Hodge's commentary on 1 Corinthians 14 (tongues, interpretation of tongues & prophecy) was seminal in my understanding that complicated and rich portion of passage. I highly recommend this commentary!
