For hundreds of years Christendom has been blessed with Bible commentaries written by great men of God highly respected for their godly walk and their insight into spiritual truth. The Crossway Classic Commentaries series presents the very best work on individual Bible books, carefully adapted for maximum understanding and usefulness for today's believers. The apostle Paul's epistles to the church at Corinth are masterpieces of spiritual truth applied to crises within the church―crises of both belief and practice. In his second letter to the Corinthians, the most personal and heart-wrenchingly honest of all of his epistles, Paul commends the value of earthly trials―God's power at work in our weakness; inner renewal despite outward suffering; eternal treasures―and resoundingly testifies to God's faithfulness in adversity. Whether used for supplemental reading or as a resource for careful study, this classic commentary will be of great benefit to every reader who opens his or her heart to its treasures.
Charles Hodge (1797–1878) was an important Presbyterian theologian and principal of Princeton Theological Seminary between 1851 and 1878. He was a leading exponent of the Princeton theology, an orthodox Calvinist theological tradition in America during the 19th century. He argued strongly for the authority of the Bible as the Word of God. Many of his ideas were adopted in the 20th century by Fundamentalists and Evangelicals.
Quit reading this book after about 200 pages. Very hard to read and understand. For all the good things to say about Hodge (precise, scientific systematician, very smart) he didn’t write a commentary that is readable to my eyes in 2018. Perhaps it is because of the language/time barrier. I initially bought the book to help me research for a paper and it served that purpose well.
A classic for study. It can feel a bit meandering for someone who might not read a more older, modern, style. It is solid in how it handles the text of 2 Corinthians
